My guess is that he felt disrespected when they pursued Ellsbury. He wanted more job security with 10 years. He saw Seattle offering him 10 years with a full no trade clause and took the offer


I can also see why the Yankees offered 7. They see the A Rod contract as a huge albatross and they didn't want to give a 31 year old a 10 year deal. I also believe that the Pujols contract was a factor. He's not the dominant player he once was. Yankee Brass did not want to take on another 10 year contract.
