As reported in the listening thread my daughter Moira won the CT state HS cross country championship this afternoon. She was 1st out of the 192 top runners in CT with a personal best time of 1844 for the 5k race. It was a very exciting day for the whole family. She will be competing in all New Englands next week. She is in the process of weighing college scholarship offers to run Division I XC and track. She has narrowed her choices down to a couple, the higher up the academic foodchain the less scholarship money is offered but she will have some nice choices to make in the coming weeks. This was the best birthday present I could ask for. I will post videos when I get home and find what's on line.
awesome Doc Congrats!!
How are you celebrating good times?

Jack is currently in PA with his "Neenah" (my mom) visiting family, so 8 and I can have a little break. Mom made sure to wake me at 7 AM this morning after I worked an overnight shift to inform me that Jack pooped. Ya know, some things I assume happen naturally; don't really need an instant relay on that.

Great job, Moira!
And Heather, I know the feeling, our six month old just started with a home daycare, and we get a detailed report of his poops. It makes for good dinner conversation...."And what did you do in school today? Oh! You crapped!"
My oldest turned four on tuesday, and we scrapped the idea of a big shindig in favor of a number of smaller get togethers with different sides of the family.
Never again.

Nice doc...
brings me back. Hate those fat self righteous keep moving people at the end of a race ( admittedly necessary).
You can tell the girls are better than the last race. First, they didn't need man bait from the guys race before them to spur them on...
But every one of those girls booked ass off the start line for a good spot.
Congrats Moira!

I'm glad you didn't take that as a knock - I just saw every overacted awful play by overacting awful actors (that would shun me from their orgies in college or whatever those people do) I was ever dragged to in that clip.
I really wanted to find the Public Theatre production, but being at work means I don't have time to listen to the stuff before I post it.

I took the kids to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular for the first time on Saturday. We were sitting in the second row, and when Santa came out, the looks on their faces were priceless. At one point, one of my daughters began dancing in front of her seat every time the Rockettes came out.

God, am I sleep deprived today. Last night was one of those nights when you wonder why you have kids.
My wife and I went to sleep at 10 exhausted from the day. Our eldest woke up at 11:30 wanting her mother and crying hard. She didn't stop until after midnight. Then the youngest woke up, and while we could get her to sleep in our arms, she wouldn't go back to sleep in the crib until 2:30 pm. I was up with her the entire time.
The eldest gets up again at 3:30 calling for her mommy to sleep with her. I didn't get to sleep until 4 and then the youngest gets up again at 6 am, and I don't get back to sleep at all.

sorry Eli, but it happens to those with just one as well... thankfully not too often.
I have had nights where he would have night terrors and would wake up crying, not knowing what he wanted, nothing was right and nothing could console him...
I realized later that he was never really awake but in this rem phase...
Maybe really waking them will get them to go back to sleep better... turn up the lights, make noise and make sure they are out of their trance...

my little girl does this all the time...its so wierd. We'll put her down and get her to walk thinking maybe it'll wake her up and she just wanders around aimlessly crying and screaming. One night, I went to the living room to get her toy and on my way back to the bedroom she was coming down the hallway, it was like the scene in T2 when Sarah Conner see's Arnold coming down the hallway and she falls to the ground, shuffling her feet and screaming trying to get away.
On top of that, it was dark...I just wonder what she thought she was seeing....but anyways, I blame the blacks.

I don't thnk these are night terrors. She does get them, but it's pretty easy to tell because she doesn't react to me when I talk to her.
The problem I see is that last January we switched her from her crib to a big girl bed. It was a horrendous adjustment, which she was able to make just in time for the baby to arrive. But we were able to make the adjustment by laying down with her so that she could get back to sleep. Now she's used to it, and every time she wakes up, she can't comfort herself and needs us to sleep with her.
Plus, she claims we have a scary witch in the house and she's scared.
I think we're going to break her of this whole thing this weekend.
Or at least we'll try.

Or at least we'll try.
yeah, I am probably the worst to give advice on bed time... Lukas still sleeps in my bed (he is 3)
We too have a monster in the house...lol but now he will use the potty excuse for not going to bed.. or being back up... and when he is sick and wakes up he seems awake and gives em instructions as to what he wants but then as soon as he gets it wants something else... so I feel like he is probably not entirely awake.

So last night was the first night of our new nightly rituals.
For Maggie, our eldest, we told her that we would not sleep in her bed any more, and that she would have to sleep by herself. She was worried about the scary witch in our house, but then I showed her our alaram and how it would go off if the scary witch came into our house. We also had her Donald Duck doll in her bed to protect her. We hoped this would work because when we went to Disney World we say a "skit" where Donald Duck stood up to the evil witch Maleficient. Then when I put her to bed, I read her a book, and then turned off the light saying I would sit with her for a little while. She asked me a couple of times to sleep with her, but I refused, and eventually she went to sleep. She woke up once during the night, and I put her back to bed and went back to my room. Donald fell of the bed, so I put it next to her. The next morning she woke up and carried Donald downstairs talking about how Donald kept the scary witch away. So although she got up once, we have progress.
For Riley, she woke up at 11 pm, at first I rocked her back to sleep but when I tried to put her back in her crib after 10 minutes of that, she woke up crying. After trying to soothe her to no avail, I said screw it, and went back to bed. She wailed for 30 minutes straight and then on and off for another 30 minutes. She woke up a couple of times in the night, but we let her cry. At 5 am she cried again and my wife fed her. Some progress, but it's going to be some work.

I visited the show yesterday after my ultrasound, and though I'm thrilled I'm going to have a girl, I can't explain the nerves I had about it, I remember being a young girl and was so shy and insecure and I totally want to be a good mom, and I'm terrified that I'm going to screw up.. My boys are great right now, and I'm doing a decent job but the ol' insecurity thing pops up, weird that I had great confidence with raising my boys, but for my own gender I'm nervous... ok, I am reaching in for my inner adult (as Ron said yesterday) and just do my best and not whine... my kids will be my kids, do my best and go be a parent..
but I just had a thought, years from now the babies will be posting on their own messageboards about us.. what will they be into, will ron and fez still be going on strong with Fez's multiple stents, will the board be archived, so they can quote stuff that daddy or mommy said 18 years ago... hmmmmmmmm.. Ron and Fez members who have kids that are old enough to be internet savvy, do they have a clue about ronandfez.net?

Jack went in for his 4 month appointment today. He is now 17 lbs, 2 oz and 26 and a half inches long, which puts him in the 90th percentile for his height & weight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/RFPeachy/1114081032.jpg
"I'm huge!"
The doctor also declared him to be hazel-eyed.
He got cranky during his shots (not too surprisingly) but was able to be calmed in under 30 seconds and is now playing happily in his bouncy chair.
The doctor gave us the OK to start him on rice cereal, and not a moment too soon. I think he's turning towards cannibalism.

I hear a lot of doctors say that now, but our doctor told us that its ok to give them cereal but its known to cause allergies...but he's never ran into that problem with any of his patients.
its one of those things where some say do and some say dont....I think it really is a crapshoot when it comes to how to raise a child anyways. No one really has every answer exactly. It worked for her though, if your baby is having trouble sleeping, I wouldn't factor it out as something to try....

Allow me to brag about my son who all of his teachers tell us is the class clown. Now, I know many might not find this to be a good thing but I take pride in it. For his eleventh birthday I took him to see Brian Regan (his favorite comedian) in Asbury Park. We had family over for his actual birthday which was on Halloween. We just told him to print up some Thank Yous to send out and this is what he came up with all by himself. What a funny little fucker.
Thank you for celebrating my birthday with me and for the very generous gift.

There are two kids walking in the woods when a bear jumps out at them. One kid starts tying his shoes and the other tells him: “You’ll never be able to outrun that bear.” And the other kid replies: “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I only have to outrun you.”

Callum will be a freshman in high school next year. Robert will go to 7th grade, and still have two years left of city ball.
I also have a 9-year-old daughter, but her school pictures just got taken a couple days ago. She goes to the same school as the boys, but she is in the elementary section, and the photograper schedule is different for them.

I found that it happens when you don't try. 8 and I tried for 3 months with no results. He then got cold feet on the whole baby thing, so we officially stopped trying. One month later, he was staring at an EPT with a dumbfounded look on his face.
Bit tired right now. We took Jack into the ER at around 1 this morning for a fever of almost 102. Of course overanxious mommy forgot to take into consideration that it was probably a side effect of the shots. He's down to under 100 right now and being surprisingly pleasant.

High fevers are scary as fuck, even though 102 is not super high for a kid its still gets us parents on edge. I suggest fever-all suppositories( keep refrigerated) and infant Motrin keep both of these around the house they are excellent baby fevers reducers. My kid has had two scary episodes from high fevers so thats why we keep the suppositories but motrin is sufficent for a lil' fever spike.

They probably could handle it but it may actually be a bit dull for 3 yo's there is very little dialogue through most of it it really is more of an adult cartoon wwith adult themes that would be over their heads

Knowing what's going on shouldn't be important when you're 3.
Key things I think that Brian is looking for are if there are any really scary or violent parts, especially in light of his daughter's recent "scary witch" problem. Amy, is there anything that's scary or violent? I've heard things, but I haven't seen it yet (if you'd put your answer in spoilers, I'd appreciate it) ... but what I did hear didn't sound scary.
I think that maybe I am a little more tolerant - for example, I saw E.T. when it was in the movie theater (I was 4) and remember being a little scared when E.T. and Elliott are in the medical tents on oxygen and stuff, but other than that I was OK. But, when Ghostbusters came out 2 years later, my dad pre-screened it before letting me watch it ... and covered my eyes during the scariest parts.
My sister, who won't watch anything scary now (she's 22), LOVED Sleeping Beauty when she was little (nearly wore out the tape before she was 3) ... but I'm cautious about showing that to my 4- and 6-year-old nieces because that dragon that Maleficent turns into during the battle sequence is pretty freaking scary! (Although, they've seen The Little Mermaid and Ursula is pretty scary, too.)

I think it also depends how old she is, if she just turned 3 she has a different understanding and can only concentrate on something for so long.
I took Lukas to see Bee Movie when it came out and it was the first he sat through.
I showed him Cars at home when he had just turned 3 or was almost 3 and he had no interest whatsoever. I showed it to him recently (he is 3 1/2 now) and the half year makes a huge difference.
What does she like in general? What peaks her interest? I know with Lukas that animals will always be a winner.. so it's a safe bet... but he is going through a Scary Monster phase right now, so I'd have to be careful with certain other movies.

She likes the various Disney Princess movies, but she also likes Monsters, Inc., Cars, Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz.
She was scared by Kung Fu Panda when she saw it with my wife at the theater last spring, but that was about 6 months ago.
I think I'll buy it, and see if she likes it. If not, I'll watch it.

a better baby, I have not seen. We were yelling making all sorts of noise, he watched us and laughed. He never took his green eyes off of his Dad during his match. If he started crying, I pinched his cheeks and he would laugh. It almost made me want one, until I realized how delicious he would taste.

My final post about Moira's high school cross country. She ran at the Footlockerxc
Northeast championships (ME to MD 12 states)at VanCortlandt Park in NYC . She placed 17th about what she expected. She will now take a few weeks off before starting indoor track. She has also made a verbal commitment to attend and run for Boston College. It was her first choice and should be a good fit. Nice to have the stress of recruiting and college selection done.

Ya know, I may as well just start my tenure here now.
I've spent the last few days completely upending the basement in preparation for my new 2 1/2 year old boy coming to live with me. Cleaning the stains off the floors and the walls with great vigor (I think it's been cleaned twice in the past 10 years), vacuuming the carpets, cleaning all of the toyboxes and toys, putting batteries in my old toys that make fun sounds and do stuff... this is gonna be great. I'm getting some new area rugs and carpet squares to make the floor safe, etcetera, etcetera.

as soon as they ask you for money, RUN
There are places out there you can do it for free, but be prepared to devote a good amount of time to taking your kid on "go-sees" and most of them are in the city, so it will cost a few bucks for parking and transportation.
They will have you submit a few pictures for their database and claim they successfully placed a few kids for magazine covers and commercials but ultimately they do nothing for you over the years of the contract.

yeah, i did research on the company and it really was a scam. we are not going to keep our appointment with them. they are a place that will charge you 1500 to take some pics for your kids to make it easier for you to get to an agency. they're not even an agency. i'd have never given them money, but there are a lot of gullible people out there (especially based on their file at the bbb). thanks to all who offered advice.

Poor kid's sick this morning - past couple days he's had both ears infected and a breathing thing where his lungs don't sound too good. He has a nebulizer. Now he's woke up with a just under 102 fever. I was worried about the sedation but it was done with so quick and he forgot about the surgery the same day. He was a different kid the same day cause he had better balance and could hear better.
He had 8 ear infections by that point (I used to get them quite a bit as a kid) and the last one lasted so many weeks and multiple kinds of antibiotics because neither was helping... and we had to fly to Germany shortly after, the risk of a torn ear drum mid air was higher than the pain suffered during surgery.

I told my wife there's risk - yeah but you can't risk his hearing or damaging his speech either. Obviously anyone with sense would get the tubes put in - unless there's a hippie argument I haven't heard of.

My 3 month old caught my daughters cold, and now she is pretty sick. She is at the hospital right now with my wife getting a chest x-ray to check for pneumonia. I am a nervous wreck. I feel ill to my stomach. I don't know what to do with myself. I don't want my little girl in the hospital for her first Christmas. Anybody's kids ever have it? i just feel like crying
Before Lukas was one he had a similar cold and I was worried about pneumonia. Took him to the urgent care center and they did the x-ray and he was fine.
It's hard when they are that little because you can't really help them much and they can't tell you how they really feel.
I hope all is well and you don't have to spend X-mas at the hospital!

On Monday, our oldest was diagnosed with two ear infections. She had been virtually lifeless all weekend, with a bad cough and a fever. She's feeling much better today after we got antibiotics.

have any of you ever heard of using massages and the chiropractor to help kids not getting ear infections and colds?
I have never done that but use to have a friend who swore by it.

I have a bias against chiropractors, and don't like using them.
Never tried either, but where would you massage the child?

well, the friend who insisted in this is against antibiotics and most medical treatment for kids (in most cases, but not entirely against)
I should look it up again... it was sort of like a therapy thing...
found something about Craniosacral Therapy

and another article... maybe Dr. Steve could voice his opinion on it

well, she ended up having pneumonia. They are keeping her overnight at the hospital. My wife is there with her now, and I just got back. she was laughing and giggling and seemed in good spirits, so hopefully it is just one night

I am so sorry! I hope you get her home in the morning just in time to unwrap gifts.
