Maddog radio has been killing Skip Caray all day for mistakingly calling the line-drive out in the bot. of the 10th yesterday a base-hit. Am I missing something? I thought him and Darling did a pretty good job. Watching a game on TBS is about a million times better than watching a game on FOX with Buck/McCarver.

Anyone who is a Caray is a horrible announcer.

If you listen to tape of Harry Caray in his days calling Cardinals and even White Sox games, he did a great job. It's later when he became a drunken parody of himself with the Cubs that he went downhill.

He was also the voice of the Cotton Bowl for years when it was the biggest bowl game of them all, and he did a great job on that too. And football's probably gotta be the hardest sport to call on the radio.

This is true. He was still good the first few years he was with the Cubs (or at least for the first 5-6 innings until he was sloshed). Listening to clips of him when he first joined the Cubs' broadcasting it's like night and day compared to his last decade+ with them. It just bugs me that most Cubs fans look to him as this great broadcaster over Brickhouse.

playoffs is a different world buddy. you have a better chance of putting one run across with a guy on third and less than two out then you do letting three guys take a crack at getting a hit and hoping not to hit into a double play. obviously you are cutting down your chances of a big inning but it's a good play in that spot, especially against somebody like carpenter in spite of him not having his best stuff.

Depending on the lineup, fine, but the top of the Dodger's order is way too good and has way too much power to give up an out like that, especially with them already having the lead. It's not like they're having trouble getting guys on base and need to scratch out some runs.

that is the thing, you need to scratch out runs in the playoffs. a two run lead is such a big difference, even with the dodgers pen. i'd rather give myself a sixty to seventy percent chance of getting one run than thirty percent chance of getting two or more.

that is the thing, you need to scratch out runs in the playoffs. a two run lead is such a big difference, even with the dodgers pen. i'd rather give myself a sixty to seventy percent chance of getting one run than thirty percent chance of getting two or more.

Outs are BAD no matter how you get them. Wasting them on stupid things like sac bunts is dumb.

I'm an NL guy actually, which I know makes for a huge bundle of contradictions (I don't like the DH). I also think stolen bases are too high risk to be worthwhile at all, walks are always good, and giving up outs is always a bad thing. There are a lot of things about the NL "style" that I don't really agree with, but i'll still watch an NL game over an AL game any time.

I 100% agree with you on stolen bases, however sacrifices are a very small risk compared to a stolen base. I agree and disagree with you. If a lead-off runner gets on and your pitcher is up, I think a sacrifice is appropriate.

I also agree on NL game over AL game. I always feel weird watching an AL game.

Oh no question. In that situation that was described above where they had the pinch hitter on for the pitcher in that spot, it would have just been better to not waste the hitter.

I grew up right outside the District, so I didn't have a team growing up. My dad liked the Dodgers, so I've always been drawn to the NL, and now that we have a team, i'm glad that its in the NL as its traditionally been an AL team.

Please. That wasn't even the best fail this year, between bat fail, kosher fail, fireworks fail, the exploding sausages fail (my personal favorite), bobblehead fail and timekeeping fail.

And coming today, fan fail, the guy who went to 19 home games this year, of which the Nats lost EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Link (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2009/10/the_nats_unluckiest_fan.html?wprss=dcsportsbog)

Stephen Krupin and his father have had Nats season tickets since the team's inaugural season in 2005. Like most season ticket holders, they don't make it to every game. This year, Stephen--a 27-year old from Arlington--went to 19, or about one in every four. Amazingly, the Nats managed a record of 0-19 in his appearances.

My favorite part:

figured that even with the worst team in the bigs, this 0-19 record couldn't have been an easy task. So I asked my cousin--a Ph.D. who works as an economist at the Department of Labor and moonlights as a statistics analyst/columnist on ESPN.com and Baseball Prospectus--to crunch some numbers. He and his mathematician friends figured out that the odds of my going 0-19 this year at Nats Park were 1 in 131,204.

Odd stat in the Phillies/Rockies game just now: since the divisional round of the playoffs began in 1991, no NL team has ever come back from being down 0-2.

It did happen in 1981, when, due to the strike that season, an extra round of playoffs was added (as I remember, that year there were 2 champions in each division, one from the half of the season before the strike, the other from the half post-strike, and Montreal got fucked because they finished 2nd both halves but would have had the best record overall), but not in the actual NLDS.

I do wonder, though: do you think the divisional series should go to best of 7 as well? I think they should.

His wife went into labor during the game.

I'm not sure if he was aware of it while he was pitching or after he got taken out, but he left the stadium after he was pulled.

I'd always welcome more playoff baseball, but as the system currently stands, the World Series is likely to extend into November, which could mean cold games and possibly snow.

Only other options would be to start earlier (again cold/snow) or shorten the season (not an option in my book).

I think that's because regular season football games really mean more than regular season hockey or baseball. I mean, the best baseball teams of all time still dropped 50 games or so in the regular season. In the NFL, you gotta win at about a .600 clip to really think about the playoffs, and more like a .750 clip to get that all-important first round bye.

I don't like TBS's shots. They just zoom in on the players faces, then give you a quick shot of the field and defensive positioning, then back to faces. Its kinda dumb becasue the game itself last night was dramatic enough, I didnt need Lidge's mole the size of my fist on my TV for 15 minutes.

It also seems like TBS adds a couple miles per hour to these guys. I don't remember the Philly bullpen throwing 94-96 consistently.

I would be interested in hearing who people think are good announcers.

It doesn't matter what crew is doing the game, someone always bitches about them.

Here is what i think they should do.

Have one announcer from each team do the games. They do their respective teams all year and know them.

These other hacks are not just awful, but they do no reaserch and have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the team. Skip Carrey and the ESPN guys are the worst of the bunch.

I think they should just alternate and have each team's regular announcers call their respective home games.

Eh, i dunno. Some of these home guys are major homers. It would alienate the other fans.. Would u want Hawk doing the games as a Cub fan? I think having one of each would balance it out.

I'd much rather hear David Cone and whoever against anybody.
