i found threads about certain games a shit, but not a whole thread about just soccer in general. Ive been gettin more into it as its been televised more and now I bought FIFA 10 so im really gettin into it. Im still kinda new to it. I obviously know the rules and shit i dont mean that, just i dont know alot about the clubs and leagues and shit.
basically I made this incase I or anyone else wants to discuss or has a question about soccer.
i know from the spanishes at work that Barcelona has won 6 championships this year. i know they have tons of other cups and shit but i dont know enough about them. 6 in one year seems insane

Id have to fuckin get so sucked in it would be insane. but i like watching spanish league when i can and the premier league games so I need a team in the premier league. I was gonna go with newcastle but those fags just got relegated.
and i dont wanna root for one of the big four

Yeah, I'm like you; I would like to get into soccer more too, but I don't want to just bandwagon the best team like I know what the hell I'm talking about. That is, I don't just want to buy some Man U gear or something.
MLS does seem like it's going to stick around, so I could get into my nearest team (which is Columbus, I think.)

Rooting for Everton is like being from New York and rooting for the Mets. It just doesn't make sense when you've got the best franchise in baseball (And I do hate the Yankees, but it's true) in the same city.

This thread is weird as shit. in two days you go from not watching soccer to pledging allegiance to Everton? and you say you prefer not to root for the big 4? let me tell you, if you're getting into the game and you're not from England, it's better to follow one of the big 4 - since you're basically just making an arbitrary choice (as I've done with Chelsea), the real point is to pick a team that you can watch every week. Well, the best games of the week (and the ones they show on tv) generally involve the big 4. Why hate on those teams just cuz they're popular in another country? I don't think you can really be considered a bandwagon jumper from across the ocean. So there's nothing wrong with following the big 4, in fact it's the most logical thing for someone with no ties to the teams and who just wants to watch the best matches every week. Also, since EPL doesn't have a playoff structure or anything, the main drama is just who is going to be in the top 4 (since there are tournament ramifications for the top 4 spots). Everton doesn't really have a shot this year, so what do you get out of watching? I'm not saying they're bad but they're not great. And Hull City?? Oh boy... If you go for a real top-flight team, you also get to watch them in Champions League, etc. It's infinitely more enjoyable.
i look at man city like the mets and man u like the yankees.
Do you say that just based on ranking? The fact is Man City just became one the most expensive, buying-up-players-from-everywhere, money-hemorrhaging teams in the world, while Man U just SOLD the "A-Rod" of soccer (Ronaldo) to another team.
I like the fact that someone is talking about soccer (Ron mentions it from time to time), but don't act like it's lame to follow the best teams.
Rooting for Everton is like being from New York and rooting for the Mets. It just doesn't make sense when you've got the best franchise in baseball (And I do hate the Yankees, but it's true) in the same city.
Exactly. Imagine being from London and choosing randomly to follow the Mets and then enduring this past season. There's no point.
Sorry for the rant, I hope more people will jump in on this discussion cuz I love talking about soccer with Americans. But really, what's wrong with following the big 4?
BLUE IS THE COLOR, FOOTBALL IS THE GAME, WE'RE ALL TOGETHER, AND WINNING IS OUR AIM! SO CHEER US ON THROUGH THE SUN AND RAIN, CUZ CHELSEA, CHELSEA IS OUR NAME!

ok basically a few points. I dont care persay if someone follows a big 4 team. I just dont wanna jump into a sport and then pick the best team. I just feel like that would be kinda cheap. i picked everton cause they have a US guy I like and they just got another one on loan.
Also, I have means in which I can watch live every single EPL, championship, league 1 and league 2 as well as just about any other league in the world. I have no problem watching everton games. Ill be watchin at 10am on saturday.
thats basically why I picked them

yes it's true you can watch basically every soccer match in the world on the internet, but that means you gotta be up at 7:30 in the morning sometimes. I don't have tivo on my internet, but maybe you do.
anyway man didn't mean to jump down your throat, obviously i'm just busting balls, but it just seems silly to me to latch onto a mid-level team when you're just getting into the sport. I watch soccer mainly for two reasons: for the chance to witness amazing physical feats, and for the drama. I admit you can find drama at any level, and oftentimes Chelsea-Man U is just a disappointing match. But, if your main interest is to enjoy the aesthetics of the game and appreciate the skills, you wanna be looking at Drogba, Berbatov, Rooney, Arshavin, etc. Even though I follow Chelsea, Arsenal is possibly the most exciting team this year so I catch them all the time. And, I'm just saying it's great to follow a team that actually competes in the Champions League. anyway, i hope you're not just supporting Everton because you think it would be cheap to follow one of the big 4 - most people in the US wouldn't even know what the big 4 is. The most drama and the most skill is concentrated among those top teams (let's not mention Liverpool at the moment).
yo keep following soccer and let us know what you think as the season progresses. Chelsea plays Everton in about a month. should be fun.

I grew up on soccer, going to many Tampa Bay Rowdies games in the late 70's-early 80's.
When the NASL folded in 1984, I went on to baseball as being my favorite sport.
I didn't get reintroduced to soccer until 10 years later in 1994 when the US hosted the World Cup. I think I watched every televised match and loved every minute of it.
MLS started the following year and even though Tampa had a team again, the interest just wasn't there for me. I did however get excited once again in 1998, 2002, and 2006 for the World Cups.
2006 was also the year I discovered my cable company had a channel called Fox Sports World (now known as Fox Soccer Channel) which played soccer from different leagues around the world.
By 2006 I was growing tired of baseball. The steroid scandals and inter-league play had really ruined the game for me, so I gave up completely and decided to start following the English Premier League.
Not knowing anything about the teams except for the fact that the Tampa Bay Bucs owners owned Manchester United, I wanted to find a team to root for. When the 2006 season started I went through each teams roster and counted how many players names I recognized. Whichever team had the most recognizable names would then be my team. Since the World Cup had ended I was seeing a lot of familiar names.
It was a tight race. If I remember correctly Manchester United had 10 names I knew, Arsenal had 11, but the team with more, 13 I believe and a team I have been loyal to ever since was Chelsea.
I love watching soccer. I am a guy that actually sets my alarm to be up and dressed by 7:45 each Saturday morning just to watch a match, no matter who is playing. That is then followed by the 10am match and then another just after noon. I also make it a habit to DVR the Premier League Review Show (Sunday nights at 8 on FSC) which highlights every match of the weekend followed by each team managers thoughts. So I have seen every goal of the season.
I feel bad that I don't follow MLS. I do watch the championship game each year and there are a few games during the season that I make sure to watch. LA Galaxy vs. Chivas USA are usually really great games, same with Real Salt Lake vs. Colorado Rapids. With Philadelphia Union joining the league this year and NY Red Bulls finally having their own soccer specific stadium I think I'll try and make this season one to follow more closely.
One last thing, a site I really like about the English Premier League is http://www.epltalk.com or follow them on Twitter, http://twitter.com/epltalk

i've watched every world cup since that '82 one, rooting for west germany (then re-unified germany) unless they played the usa. i got to go to one world cup match when it was here (norway vs italy, i think - with tons of hot norwegian chicks). i've been to a bunch of world cup qualifiers including one vs. mexico in foxboro (just so much animosity there it was incredible). used to have so much fun going on stupid road trips to dc or boston. even had mls season tickets for a few years before i finally had to drop them.

i always got into the world cups, but because of the amount of time i spent watching sportscenter and goin on espn and cause i somehow remember all this shit, i knew more about it than most people who didnt follow. Same with like Nascar and tennis and that kinda shit. So most of the teams in the EPL have at least 8-10 guys ive heard of. i picked everton mostly cause Tim Howard, who i actually remember hearing about with the globetrotter shit and the metrostars days. Then when I heard they got donovan on loan, plus i was gettin to know their guys from being their coach in FIFA 10, it was pretty easy for me.
yea so what if they are in 11th, im a fuckin knicks fan for christ sake and since i can see all the games, its fine. i didnt even know they had finished that well until after i picked it too. I cant wait for this game saturday now. especially since they get to beat down Knox's arsenal fags
and i like cahill. he was my main weapon when i managed them in FIFA. and im becoming a big fan of Jo and his awesome hair
Don't get attached to Jo, he's horrible and will most likely be gone this month.
Arsenal and Everton played on the first day of this season. Arsenal won 6-1, it was ugly. I certainly don't think we'll see that same score line this time. I just hope Landon will at least be on the bench for this one.

I thought they had jo for the rest of the year. can you sell a guy you have on loan?
and really, i havent seen him play but he is rated pretty highly in FIFA and his stats didnt look too bad. though stats will prob be the one thing that takes me awhile to know whats really good and not so good based on certain things i havent noticed yet

Everton can return Jo back to Manchester City. City can then keep him, loan him out to another team, sell him, or release him.

Yes, the Serie A returned from their winter break this week and that game was earlier today.
If a team isn't happy with their loaned players they can give them back. Freddy Adu was on loan in Portugal. During the winter break his team fired their manager and hired someone new who immediately returned Adu back to his parent club.

and now he is bitching again that he doesnt play. he wants to go to hull city but is considering greece cause he is a pussy.....oh wait, its so he will play. Why did he ever leave MLS? When he was there, people still thought he was good.
this soccer channel is gonna be the end of me i think. I didnt think i had it, now i found it and im watchin it for hours. I even just added the iO sports package in part cause i get goltv now.

Adu has signed with a Greece team Aris FC. He'll be joining fellow American Eddie Johnson who was also loaned out to them earlier this week.
My cable company has GolTV as part of a Spanish pak. I know Gol has English and Spanish broadcast channels, but I'm pretty sure if I ordered it, it would be Spanish only, which would suck for me.
I used to have Setanta at my previous residence, but I moved this summer and the cable company here doesn't offer it. No big deal now since it looks like Setanta is being bought out and has removed all future EPL games from their schedule.

Also, I should have added this earlier. If a team loans out a player, they can get that player back whenever they want. Sometimes injuries happen, so the team will have no other choice but to get their players back.
Happened just a few weeks ago with a team in the EPL. I can't remember which team, but their starting goalie wasn't playing up to par, so the team retrieved their other goalie from his loaned team several hours before their match.

yea i started reading up on it. apparently there is alot of fuckin stipulations you can put in and sometimes teams try to sneak backdoor agreements too.
and goltv is prob spanish as the spanish pack, but check if you have it as part of a sports pak. then it would be english

The concept of "stoppage time" is one of the stupidest in soccer to me. It's clear the clock is being stopped at various points for various reasons, so why not stop the clock on the scoreboard as well? Instead, we play through with the clock running, and at the end, we're told "Oh, there will be 4 more minutes now."
I think they used to not tell how much stoppage time there was at all, and so everyone just kinda guessed.

i think its cause such a big part of soccer and who excels is cause of fitness. if you stopped the clock and shit every time, guys would stall longer, try to rest more, and fitness wouldnt play as big a factor in games

Rene won, so Jose had to buy him a Barcelona jersey. Its nice, nike, authentic, tag says like 70 bucks. Only Rene already has one. I was thinking about this too: a lot of us in here are novice EPL fans, looking for teams to support. And some of us are real front runners (probably me, especially) -- but I notice none of us have decided to claim to be Manchester United fans.

20 years ago, you would be a soccer aficionado with your Italian football fetish. Now, it's like watching 60s wrestling ... or modern wrestling for that matter, when you have MMA.
The Italian style is boring defensive football, the league itself is financially unstable, plagued by officiating scandals, with ties to the mob, and almost no big stars left.
The EPL currently is a head above everyone else with the exception of Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Bundesliga is OK, but it's turning into a domestic league only with few foreign stars. It's OK, if you're into that, but it's no longer a truly international super league, ditto Serie A and Ligue 1 (which never was a top league to begin with).
If you want a team to follow either pick a top 4 team from England (Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal), Barcelona or Real Madrid. However, if you pick Real Madrid or Barcelona, you're going to be watching a lot of lopsided games. Fun at first, but eventually you'll just start skipping the Xerez and Valladolid games, then the Valencia and Getafe games, then the Sevilla and Atletico games. Eventually, you'll be watching just 2 games a year - El Clasico plus a few Champions League matches. And are you a football fan after that?
Now, you can try to be cool and pick some more obscure team from Spain or England, but you'll be pretty bored when the Champions League comes around, as those teams won't be in it (for long, anyway). And if you start talking about the Europa League, you're retarded. It's like the NIT, sure it's there, and teams play, but who cares?
PS: You can also be super cool and pick my favorite football team - CSKA Moscow. But that's a level of cool reserved exclusively for me.

Once again, if this was the 70s-80s, and you were watching the classic Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord, cool. "Total Football" and all that, but right now, it's relegated to 3rd class status in Europe, behind the big 4 championships, and then a bunch of other, and only then - Eredivisie. I was watching a VVV-Feyenoord game a while back, and was falling asleep 15 minutes into the game.

The internet is a wonderful thing. i can pretty much see any Everton game so that helps. Also it helps that I like watching good games. Even if my team isnt in it, I can watch Drogba and Rooney and shit all fuckin day so I can still get into champions league shit even if Everton is stuck in the NIT

From EPLTALK.com:
ESPN has reached an agreement with Fox Sports International to sub-license more Premier League games beginning with the 2010-2011 season, a source confirmed to EPL Talk on Tuesday.
The number of games ESPN will show during the 2010-2011 season will be 83, which is almost double the number of Premier League games shown (48) by ESPN during the current 2009-2010 season.
Currently, ESPN has sub-licensed the rights from FSI to show the Saturday 7:45am ET and Monday 3pm ET kickoffs.
As of press time, the additional time slot ESPN has acquired for the 2010 season was unknown, but EPL Talk believes it’s most likely the 8:30am ET Sunday time slot because it won’t conflict with other live programming that ESPN provides. The other possibility is that ESPN may take the Saturday 10am ET time slot since several games are available at that time, but the issue ESPN will have is where to place the EPL game since ESPN has its College Gameday program during that time slot.
When asked to comment on the story on Tuesday afternoon, an ESPN spokesperson said “We have nothing to announce at this time.”
The 2010-11 Premier League season begins on August 14, 2010.
