Great pitching matchup tonight, Maine vs. Zambrano, so I think the Mets win 12-11.

Keith Hernandez is right. Franco's bat is so slow. How much longer do we keep him active just because he wants to play till he is fifty, and the guys like him?

or any other reasonable hitter in the majors that a team is looking to trade. The answer isnt always in the minors. But, why not them? I at least can say in confidence that they don't have the swing of a 48 year old

WHO INTERESTED THE SKINNY
Jose Castillo
Pirates Thanks, but no thanks
May 15 - The Mets, despite a need for a second baseman, are not interested in trading for Jose Castillo, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Castillo's agent has asked the Pirates to trade his client if he cannot play regularly.
The Bucs offered Castillo in trade talks in the offseason but were thwarted by a lack of takers.

franco is still a decnt pinch hitter/ backup first basemen
yes they're are many more younger players that are capable of doing the same job
but i like having him as kind of a mentor and influence
think about it if some punk kid is sitting there complaining he's just a pinch hitter and occasional spot starter if could cause disruption in the clubhouse
franco's just happy to still be a member of the team, and all the intangibles of playing in the game for almost 30 years
thats a lot of knowledge there, even if he cany speak english

So, after reading this article on Milledge (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2007/05/16/2007-05-16_lastings_latest_bad_rap-2.html), and seeing Gomez, I wonder which pitcher the Mets are going to trade Milledge for.

we shoulda traded him for zito last year
i know its hindsight and i probably posted in this thread or the offseason thread that we shouldnt trade lastings for him but you know what they say about hindsight being 20-20

I have two tickets for the Sat. 5/19 Mets-Yanks game at Shea that I can't use. They are Mezz Reserved, Section 12, Row L.
I'm looking to trade with someone for comparable Sun. 5/20 at Shea, Fri 6/15 at Yankee Stadium, or Sun. 6/17 at YS.
(I'd really rather get tix I can use, but I guess worst case I'd sell my seats.)
PM me with interest.

Don't get too excited. Contrary to the money spent, the Cubs have been REALLY bad so far this season with the exception of about a week.
And seeing replays don't get me mad. It's only when I see the Cubs lose live that the fury and anguish cannot be contained.

It may be time to give Schoenweiss the old Jorge Julio treatment. He has not impressed me one bit this year, and with Feliciano pitching lights out Scotty's become expendable. There's gotta be an AL contender with prospects looking for some lefty bullpen help.

Pedro Eyes August Return (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2879492)
BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic -- New York Mets fans, mark your calendars: Pedro Martinez could be back on the mound by August.
"Things with Pedro are moving forward very nicely," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said Tuesday. "We are hoping for his return in August, but the most important thing is that he recovers from his injury."

olie perez vs chuck james
should be a decent game depends on what perez shows up
BoondockSaint
05-23-2007, 06:43 PM
Perez really hasn't been all that inconsistent this year:
IP H R ER
7.0 5 1 1
2.2 1 3 3
6.2 9 2 2
7.0 8 4 4
5.2 3 3 1
4.2 5 8 2
8.1 2 1 1
7.2 5 2 2
7.0 4 0 0
I might ever buy a Perez jersey. Plus, this is the third time he's beaten the Braves this year.

at any rate, "Let's Go [1-syllable-team-name]" and "Let's Go [2-syllable-team-name] *clap clap clap-clap-clap*" are perfect. no need to add any extra bells, whistles or HOOOS.

They blow.. the Mets can never beat the Braves. You realize that they only have 3 wins against the Braves all year.. Every win was by Oliver Perez (who basically just pitches like a maniac so isn't exactly a consistent starter) They're never gonna win the series if they don't get over this goddamn hump.

Weird game tonight. The pitching was great, the running stunk. Big ninth inng but Wagner wasn't sharp. Eh, I'll take it.
By the way, hearing Pedro say that he thinks there is no doubt that he will have increased velocity made me warm inside. "If you ask me, I don't have any doubts I'll be mid-90s again," Martinez said. If Pedro is able to hit 92 or 93 when he wants, look out.

I am getting very concerned... They can't score more than 2 runs against a 6.00 ERA pitcher... Then Heilman blows a 2-0 lead on a 2 out 1-2 pitch!!?? Why is that pitch anywhere near home plate?!?!? To top it off, they blow a 2nd and 3rd, none out chance in the 8th... AND LOSE CHAVEZ IN THE PROCESS!!!! This team seems to be snake-bit! Does anyone think they can hit against Hamels tomorrow?

Not a chance. They have had a tough streatch and the Phils have played them well in the past few years. They have to get healthy. The opening day starting lineup hasn't played together in forever. It will be ok, every team has to hit a bad slide. Just be happy its now and not in September

"Survey SAYS...one more...for the good guys!"
Does anyone think they can hit against Hamels tomorrow?
To answer that question...no, they can't.
But it's not like they won't have a 5 game lead on the Phils even after they get swept tomorrow.
And I wouldn't worry about the Braves...that train is off the tracks.

*tips his cap to the Phils*
Only thinkg I can do.. you guys got to Feliciano and heilman... gotta give ya credit...
Well, we'll find out a lot about these two teams by the end of the month...they both have tough schedules for the rest of June, although the Phillies get a bit easier draw of the two:
Mets:
3 @ Detroit
3 @ Los Angeles Dodgers
3 @ New York Yankees
3 vs. Minnesota
3 vs. Oakland
4 vs. St. Louis
4 @ Philadelphia
That 9 game road trip is absolutely brutal, especially if the Phils sweep them tonight and they go into it having lost three straight. Even the home games are tough with Minnesota and Oakland both having quality arms.
St. Louis is the only easy series of the bunch.
Phillies:
3 @ Kansas City
3 vs. Chicago White Sox
3 vs. Detroit
3 @ Cleveland
3 @ St. Louis
3 vs. Cincinnati
4 vs. New York Mets
If the Phils have any heart, they should club the hell out of Kansas City, even on the road...the Sox will be interesting, because both teams are right around the same spot record wise, but going in opposite directions...getting that series at home looks a lot better than 3 in Chi-Town
It gets tough with Detroit and then @ Cleveland...they could conceivably drop 4 or 5 of 6 there unless they're just streaking or luck out with favorable pitching matchups
But it eases up with 3 @ St. Louis, and 3 vs. Cincy.
That Phils/Mets four game set at the end of the month should be a hell of a lot of fun.

How are they in first by 5 games? I thought it was 3 1/2... Has this last home stand filled you with a great deal of confidence? I've been through the '73 World Series (up 3 games to 2). I've also been through the '85 season, the '87 season, the '88 season (when they were a SURE THING to win it all), and the 2000 season when Benitez destroyed all our dreams... Not to mention last year when they never should have lost that series...I'm not a pesimist. I'm a realist. Atlanta may be floundering like we are, but those Phils are right in the mix after we completely folded to them in our building, and they're hungry as hell!

Well, it's more that he would pitch well but on some lousy teams. And he'd have years where he was 8-20 and 3-15. Now even if you take into account how bad the Mets were those years you would think he'd have a better record. Yeah, that 's a better comparison. Sid Fernandez was the same way but I always thought that he pitched too slow and the fielders would lose focus behind him. An interesting stat for El Sid is that if he pitched 140 more innings he would qualify for the record of best all time Opponents Batting Average Against and he would be tied for third with Pedro behind Nolan Ryan and Koufax.

The SI cover is the kiss of death! The last time the Mets were featured was '06 cover with Beltran, Wright, LoDuca, Reyes and Delgado. How'd that season end? The one before that was 2000 where they declared Piazza the greatest catcher ever... Another failed season. 1999 Introduced the best infield ever (Ordonez, Alfonzo, Ventura, Olerud)... That didn't work out so well either. They had another great cover in the mid 90's declaring Isringhausen, Pulispher and Wilson the greatest phenom pitchers ever... That never panned out for the Mets as far as I can remember. Any SI covers are a disaster for them...

Francessa just said that Franco is playing 1b instead of Delgado.. I know Carlos is struggling but Franco can't hit a fastball.. And his avg is 209vs Clemens with 12k's Don't know how many at bats.. I don't know about that move..

I would have done it the other way too. Or even DH Castro but watch Franco get a big hit tonight and Willie's hunch works out.

Stranger things have happened.. I was only thinking Castro C because of Oli.. Maybe a Spanish speaker would be a more calming influence on him.. He does tend to get a little hyped on the mound, and walks the ballpark..

He actually seems to do better when there is more pressure like in the post-season and against the Braves and Yanks this year. I think the pressure keeps him focused. In 28.1 innings against the Braves and Yanks this year he has 4 walks.

Wright was the Key to that Inn.. 3-1 count 1st 2nd no out.. You can't swing at a ball on a 3-1 count and ground it right to Arod for the force.. He made an out and Got Reyes off base.. Double whammy..

Tommy Lasorda and Michael Milken are in the Mets tv booth. Lasorda songs drunk and he's breathing into the mic like Paul O.
