Pedro deals with fear of making comeback (http://www.northjersey.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkyNjgmZmdi ZWw3Zjd2cWVlRUV5eTcxNzcyMTkmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZU VFeXk2)
The questions burned deeply for Pedro. Would his arm respond to its first competitive test in almost a year? Would all the physical therapy restore Martinez's greatest gift, the ability to make the ball move late and unpredictably?
The answer was yes -- and no. He threw five innings against the St. Lucie Mets, most of whom were just teenagers fresh off June's amateur draft, and the results were both positive (Pedro totaled 67 pain-free pitches, 50 for strikes) and not-so-glowing (he averaged only 86 mph on the radar gun and struggled in the first two innings).
When it was over, Pedro and general manager Omar Minaya agreed it was a good day and an important step in what seems like an interminable rehab. Martinez will pitch again early next week, but no one seems willing to put him on an exact timetable for Shea.
This much is certain, though: While Pedro's arm appears fully healed, he's not exactly ready to conquer Mark Teixeira and Co.
"I'm still missing badly with my location," is what Martinez said after the workout. "There's work I have to continue to do."
Sounds like he's still a month away.

im not sure about that, but i remember a rookie making his major league debut in the playoffs lst year or the year before. so i dont think so. as long as you are named to the playoff roster.

There's a petition going on to save the Home Run Apple when the Mets move to to citiField. as old and cheesy as it is, i love that damn apple. let's try to bring a piece of Shea to the new park:
http://www.SaveTheApple.com
p.s. as for the new stadium, it should've been named Bob Murphy Memorial Park. damn corporate naming rights!

Thats fine, just come up with 125 million and you'll beat Citibank's offer for the naming rights.
BTW-If anyone wants the rights to name the front door on my condo, I'll settle for 1 mil annually.

I pretty psyched for this game. National TV, in Wrigley against a hot team with the series on the line, Glavine's 300th.
I'd like to see Tommy get it at home but this is as good a place as any to get it.
Here's what I want my lineup to be for the next few days:
Reyes ss
Gotay 2b
Wright 3b
Delgado 1b
Alou lf
castro c
anderson rf
thrilledge cf
pitcher
that is the best team we can put on the field right now.
I wouldn't mind seeing Reyes get a day off sometime here. it looks like he's pressing a little and getting frustrated. And LoDuca can take his time coming back btw...

Its nice to see something that.. Lets face it guys, we might not see many times again.. If ever.. With 5 man rotations, specialists, babying of pitchers with pitch counts and what not, We may never see a 300 game winner ever.. I mean look at Johan Santana.. He is considered maybe the best pitcher in the game for years now.. And what is he at 80 wins?? I don't think we will see it again for a long time.. So even thought it was the Mets.. You have to appreciate history.

I know everyone says "You'll never see that again" but I'm not so sure. I understand all the stuff about the 5 man rotation, but the most recent 300 game winners all pitched during the 5 man era for their entire careers. Clemens came up in 86, Glavine in 87 and that was already the time when 5 man rotations were common. The 4 man rotation went out for the most part by the late 70's-early 80's.
ESPN showed a stat last night that of the 22 300 game winners, 11 of them came before 1925. Only 3 of them came between 1925-1980, and the remaining 8 had their 300th win between 1980-present. 1980 is a pretty good dividing line for the 5 man rotation. That pretty much destroys the notion that "We'll never see it again". If anything, its increasing. Pitchers are able to pitch longer and more effectively thanks to better training. Injuries which used to end careers (rotator cuff, Tommy John) are now routinely corrected. You'd need a great pitcher to come up early 20-22 and pitch for around 20 years effectively, averaging 15 wins. He could have some 20 win seasons in the middle and 10-12 win seasons at the beginning and end. I don't think he's the last.
cougarjake13
08-06-2007, 06:39 AM
randy johnson needs just 16 but with his back im not sure if he'll be healthy enough to get it
heres johan stats
Year Ag Tm Lg W L G GS CG
8 Yr WL% .690 89 40 241 165 6
so if he averages 15 wins over the next 12 he'll finish with 180 plus the 89 he has already which is 269
Those in line after Johnson figure to have even longer odds. Active pitchers with 200 or more victories include
Mike Mussina (244 wins, age 38),
David Wells (235 wins, age 44),
Jamie Moyer (225 wins, age 44),
Curt Schilling (213 wins, age 40),
Kenny Rogers (210 wins, age 42),
Pedro Martinez (206 wins, age 35),
and John Smoltz (203 wins, age 40).
As for the younger guys on the radar, you've got
Tim Hudson (130 wins, age 32),
Kevin Millwood (130 wins, age 32),
Livan Hernandez (129 wins, age 32),
Barry Zito (109 wins, age 29),
Roy Oswalt (108 wins, age 29),
Javier Vazquez (108 wins, age 30),
Roy Halladay (106 wins, age 30),
Mark Buehrle (105 wins, age 28),
Mark Mulder (103 wins, age 29),
C.C. Sabathia (94 wins, age 27),
Jon Garland (90 wins, age 27),
Johan Santana (89 wins, age 28),
Brad Penny (85 wins, age 29),
Carlos Zambrano (78 wins, age 26),
John Lackey (72 wins, age 28),
Ben Sheets (71 wins, age 29),
Josh Beckett (70 wins, age 27),
Jake Peavy (67 wins, age 26),
Dontrelle Willis (65 wins, age 25),
Jeremy Bonderman (55 wins, age 24),
and Dan Haren (46 wins, age 26).
of the younger list i see maybe santana, zambrano, willis and peavy being the only guys capable and young enough to do it
cougarjake13

Pedro calls latest rehab start 'great improvement' (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2974495)
Figure he's still about a month away, but if he gets up to 80-90 pitches in the next few weeks it could be sooner. He knows himself better than anyone else. If he's happy, then its good news regardless of the results.

Well, both games he has gone to the bullpen afterwards and thrown until he reached 80 pitches like they do in spring training. Pedro said he thinks he needs one more start and then wants to come up. But they are still giving him 5 days rest between starts instead of 4. Who knows? He topped out at 88 today but so did El Duque. He's coming back this year but unless the Mets really collapse in the next week and fall out of first there's no need to push him.

But they are still giving him 5 days rest between starts instead of 4. Who knows? He topped out at 88 today but so did El Duque. He's coming back this year but unless the Mets really collapse in the next week and fall out of first there's no need to push him.
no need to push but i dont want his first start to be the last week of sept or the NLDS if we get there

I'm getting a little concerned about whether Pedro is really gonna come back. They were going to start him tomorrow for Double-A Binghamton in Trenton so the Mets brass can see him pitch in the afternoon then get back for the Mets game against the Dodgers. Now they moved his start back to Monday and he's pitching for the lowly St. Lucie team again. I'm afraid they're not really confident that he can even handle double-A or triple-A batters, forget about Major league hitters. I just think they're really gonna need a boost in the rotation (or even the bullpen) and if they don't get Pedro back the team is gonna have a lot of trouble going into October given the frailties of this pitching staff.
Also... doesn't he have to be brought up by Sept 1st to be eligible for the post season? They're still talking about two more rehab starts. How can he get in two more by next Saturday?... It's impossible.
I don't think we're going to see him this year. Does anyone else feel this way?

They're giving him an extra day because he had a stiff neck from sleeping on it wrong. He's on the DL so Sept. 1st doesn't matter. They have a 6 game lead so why rush him? He'll get 3 starts up here before the playoffs.

am i crazy to think that el duque should be the one left out of the postseason rotation? if no other reason then that he worked out of long relief for the White Sox when they won the world series. and because last year he hurt his leg at the last minute and i don't trust him fully yet.
at this point yes, at least for the division series best of 5, it should be maine, glavine and pedro, not necessarily in that order but def those 3
and have sosa, perez, and el duque join the reg bullpen guys but
not fucking mota !!!!!!!!
that formerly roided up freak has been shit since coming back from suspension and seems to give up runs every time he pitches, by no means should he be on the post season roster, and if for some reason he is, then he should never see the field from any closer then the fucking bullpen bench

I don't know if this game bothered you other Mets fans like it bothered me... But this was terrible! They had it in their hands to put this team in the rear view and they let them off the hook for the 6th time in a row!!! I guess the Mets will eek out the division, but by letting the Phils win these games it keeps their wildcard chances alive... Do you really want to see this team in the NLCS??? The Mets seem to melt when they face them! We finally dispelled the Braves curse and now we're saddled with this! Jimmy Rollin's pre-season prediction may yet come through. THIS WAS A HORRIBLE LOSS!!!:help:

Mets better hope Philly doesn't win the wildcard.

Four errors through three innings? HAHAHA....have to start looking for my broom pic from a couple weeks ago.
By the way, this would be the 8th straight victory for the Phils over the Mets.

Best. bullpen. ever.
Dobbs smacked the shit out of that one.
Fixed it for you
Well, Mets fans can take it easy...you've got 13 left against the Nationals and Marlins, so it'd take a pretty monumental collapse for them to not make the playoffs.
And let's face it...the National League is a joke more so this season then it was last season. So they're still in solid shape.
You guys just better pray really hard that the Phillies don't some how stumble their way into the Wild Card. On the off chance that happens, then you should worry.
