I am shocked

MLB.com reports that free agent SP Rich Harden will miss the entire 2012 season, as he had surgery to repair a torn shoulder capsule last week. The injury has reportedly been bothering Harden for the last five seasons, and over that span he had never made more than 26 starts in a season. Last year, Harden went 4-4 with a 5.12 ERA for Oakland.

Brauns suspension reversed

Finally something for epo to be happy aboot

mlb not too happy about it either.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/mlb/4048/ryan-braun

Major League Baseball said Thursday in a statement that it "vehemently disagrees" with arbitrator Shyam Das' decision to overturn Ryan Braun's PED suspension.
Das made the decision Thursday evening after hearing an appeal from Braun last month in New York City. According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "the appeal went Braun's way not so much on contesting the result" but through "some kind of technicality." This story is far from over, but Braun will be in Brewers camp on Friday and a free man when the regular season opens in early April. It's a major victory for the Brewers and for the 2011 NL MVP himself.

2 things about this Braun thing bother me.

One is how nobody has explained how a vial of urine sitting for a few days can somehow increase it's level of testosterone.

This chain of custody argument is nonsense. The cain was never broken. Maybe it took longer than it was supposed to but as far as I know it never went into anybody hands that shouldn't have had it.

Also the argument that his numbers didn't change much.

OK well maybe he took the stuff and he didn't get the results he wanted.

Just taking a banned sunstance isn't going to make you Barry Bonds ( who I still believe is innocent and a victim of the Man ).

its the 2nd highest contract ever paid to a 3rd basemen (ARods is #1). He has never done anything is the majors, he has been an AS 1 time, 1 GG, hes coming off a terrible season, he has injury problems, he has 1 year of 30 plus hrs, his avg .288 BA, 21 hrs, 80 rbis and runs a year with no speed at all. I think at $17 million a year that is overpriced. Hes not a stud that would get that from other teams. I agree with you the injury problems are troublesome, however he is 27 and if he stays healthy is top three third baseman, and it's a weak position.

You might think he is overpriced (who is to say) but the Nats did not overpay. If he went into free agency he would have gotten much more (provided he says healthy and plays well this season) dough.

you keep saying he would get more as a free agent but what backs that up? No other 3rd has ever gotten a contract that big except Arod and his #s are a dime a dozen at that position. .288 21 80 and 80 can be had much cheaper so why would someone else give him $17 million a year? Its not like he hits 40 hrs a year with 110 rbis so hes not a huge power guy and hes not a specialist like an ichiro or reyes or even crawford who will steal 50 bases and hit .300 while scoring 100 runs. He at best has avg #s.

What difference does it make that no other third baseman got that? Should he make 2 million cause that’s what Mike Schmidt made? I don't get your point? Adrian Beltre got almost the same money and he was older and had a rep of being a malcontent who only tried when he was in a walk year. Zimmerman is a gold glove caliber third baseman. Well within his skill set (if he gets healthy) and hits his prime, for the Nats to anticipate he will hit over .300 thirty jacks and knock in and score 100 runs. Now that he has some bats in the lineup, I honestly would not be surprised if (again healthy) he flirts with .320 35 120 100 50 2b gold glove type season. What kinda of money those numbers get ya? More than 17 mil a year I can assure you. The Steroid era is over.

he has hit .300 1 time, never hit 35 hrs only hit over 25 hrs 1 time only had 100 runs 1 time and hit over 100 rbis 2 times all in 6 full major league seasons (7 overall). He has the same amount of seasons with 51 rbis or less as he does with 100 rbis. What makes you think any of those numbers healthy or not could happen? He has had 4 seasons where he played more then 140 games and over 500 ab's thats 4 years of full seasons and he has never come close to those #s that you pulled out of nowhere.

And no he shouldnt get $2 million because of a guy from 25 years ago but he should get the going rate of a guy who hits .288 and 20 hrs. There is nothing special about him compared to others at his position. And even if he hit the #s you made up that he hasnt come close to ever getting in his life he still wouldnt get $17 mil per because only few teams would pay that much for any player and those teams either have their 3rd or wont add another guy at that price. Once again we arent talking about a guy who has proven to have those fake #s you made up we are talking about a guy who has underachieved and has avg #s at a power position. You make it seem like he gave the nats a hometown discount and he would have gotten more as a free agent and thats laughable.

.296/.370/.499, .374 wOBA, 132 wRC+, 24.6 UZR, 5.6 BSR, 17.1 fWAR 1737 PA

are certainly nothing to sneeze at, and are much better than Wright's since '09.

.284/.364/.463, .360 wOBA, 125 wRC+, -19.8 UZR, 0.9 BSR, 9.5 fWAR, 1735 PA

As a healthy 24 year old he hit 292 33 HR 106 rbi 110 runs. If he is healthy at 27 my fake numbers are conservative.

You are right its laughable Boston or the Yanks or the Dodgers or the Cubs, etc wouldn't give the second best third basemen, a good looking, squeaky clean star more money.

It's as much a symbolic gesture as it is substantive. He's been the face of this franchise and its best player since the team moved to Washington in 2005. He's home-grown talent and essentially a "local" since he came out of UVA. And for the reasons mentioned before, it really isn't overspending -- like Werth was.

There is "momentum" for Major League Baseball to expand the playoffs to include 10 teams, five from each league, beginning in 2012, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman has learned. Nothing is finalized but a deal is "extremely likely" and expected to be done soon. A Fox Sports report says the deal is a "go" without specifying further.

The expansion of the playoffs to include two wild cards per league was agreed upon by the MLB Players Association and the owners in the new collective bargaining agreement, but the decision hadn't yet been made whether it would start in 2012 or 2013. Commissioner Bud Selig had set a deadline of March 1 on when there would be an announcement, so evidently he's taking full advantage of Leap Day.

The new playoff format is expansion in the number of teams, but it also puts more emphasis on the regular season, in terms of winning the division. With this new format, the two wild cards will play a one-game playoff. The winner will then have to turn around -- possibly after having to use their ace -- and play the team with the best regular-season record in the LDS.

This new format should appease most clubs. The titans will be happy that a wild card can't slip in on equal footing (see the Phillies vs. Cardinals series last season) and clubs in loaded divisions like the AL East and NL East have a shot at getting into the one-game wild card round.

Got the new Droid Bionic, and after being told it was unlimited (grandfathered-in because I joined my girl's phone plan) , they now tell me I have a data limit (2GB a month....seriously). I had already went out and bought MLB.TV premium subscription, thinking that I can watch games on my phone.

Now I find out that according to message boards on the internet, that streaming a single game on my phone will eat 2GB of data.

So, I will be able to watch a half of a game a month, otherwise I will be punished dearly by Verizon Wireless.

Sprint is looking good right now....and I am fucking pissed. I have this fast as fuck phone that I cant use barely at all. It seems that every time I pay for anything in this country, there is always a fucking catch and it is never the right service I wanted.

Look at Hamiltons past. He fucked up early in his career almost ending it for good. He makes a comeback in a couple of years, plays in Cincy for a bit and then goes to Texas. where he becomes a star He has 2 relapses. I know being an addict isnt easy and theres always temptation but there needs to be some responsibility. Doesnt he have a chaperone? Not sure if it includes the offseason, maybe it should

There was talk about giving him a 5 yr extension at about 75 million. If I was an owner I am looking to him as not worth that after the 2nd relapse. Theres all those possibilities that he is still drinking even though he isnt being caught even if he puts up respectable numbers. I wouldnt trade him but I would take a year off the contract or maybe offer less money. If there was a 3rd confirmed relapse then I would trade him. You want to give 2nd chances but as an owner sometimes you gotta cut losses

If That was me, I wouldnt be going in front of the cameras looking like that.

what Joe did was fucking bush, as the rule is all spring training games go 10 innings, he had plenty of pitching left and waited until Bobby V had a kid up and throwing plenty of pitches...a kid trying to make the team and about to get a big opp/test in a tie game late vs the f'n yanks

f joe g for being an entitled baby cunt

bobby v is/was right no matter which way you look at it

unlike his stupid take on Jeter's play earlier in the year...he's not 1 for 2.

What little I saw of him, I have to say I liked so far in Toronto. Can he keep up the statistical hitting he put up in spring training, no fucking way...yet he's not here for that. We need a guy who can play all infield spots in a pinch and that's one thing he can do still easily. He's not GG caliber any longer, but he's no liability.

The biggest thing he'll bring is preparation and mentorship to this VERY young Jay's team, especially in the infield. With Hechavaria coming up soon, it will only get younger too. I like the move more than I thought I would, and if he falters he's a simple cut with that low salary and we have a few guys in the minors ready to fill the role...but with a ton less past/leadership abilities.

159 hits for 3,000

no shot, he'll be in as a starter once a week or less until we have injury concerns and or later in the season when guys need spells

he'll need about 3 years to get that, which seems unlikely

he's HOF at this point anyway bc of his glove too, so it's not that big a deal

I'm sure he'd LOVE to get there, but likely won't

plus getting there at 50 takes a TON of that clout away from the stat.

They are going to win 90+ games this year. They won 97 with a rag tag rotation in 2011. Of course I want a 28th WS and they need to focus on their pitching but Its not like its the end of the world if they dont win it all.

All eyes are on Anaheim and Miami even the Phils. Anaheim is looking very strong and they inked a huge TV deal but dont count Texas out yet. As far as the Dodgers, I dont see a mass exodus of Dodger fans switching over to the Angels, The McCourt nightmare is over and they are moving on. Theyre going to have money to spend.

As a Yankee fan, I'll admit since 2002 with the Giambi signing their payroll exploded but theyre not the only team who should be accused of trying to buy a title.

I take no shame in saying kudos to the Rays as they are able to put playoff contenders ith a small payroll.

If youre a team like the Nats and the Braves you got a decent shot at the WC but with not the huge microscope that Miami, Philly and Anaheim has.

I dont think the Phils have that same pressure the Marlins and Angels do. Simply because they lost their 3 and 4 hole hitter indefinitely before the first game of the season. Sure they still have enough talent to win and make the playoffs but if they do I think the story will be how they overcame injury rather then it was expected.

Wont Howard be back before may and utley has been avg at best the past 2 years and an injured 3 seasons in a row. Its not like you have been able to count on him all that much anyway. If the phillys dont make the playoffs it will be a much bigger deal. Florida built a decent team and should compete but they dont have anywhere near the pitching the phils have but they do have some pretty decent bats but in a huge new stadium that looks like from the dimensions should be a pitchers park.

Howard could be back in May but many sources say that kind of injury takes a year at least to get back to 100%. Utley when healthy is great. Problem is, it seems the knee injury that sidelined him til July last year may have happened in his other knee now. Even surgery doesnt guarantee it could fix the problem.

They have the pitching, but its gonna be tough having Thome, Wigginton, Juan Pierre and Mayberry platooning all over the field.
