I thought they did it for travel purposes and it was going forward

to me it's rewarding the lesser record team by giving them 2 games at home first

wait til the better record team has to go back home down 0-2 they're not gonna care that they get three in a row at home

2-2-1 is the most fair

I remember MLB did that in the 95 season of the first wildcard/divisional rounds. At the time I thought it was stupid giving the lower seed the first two games at their home ballpark. I still think it's stupid.

Dusty Baker just managed his way to a game 5, instead of throwing Latos against Zito today and trying to win, he saves him for game 5 against the Giants ace! And he marches out that homerun derby pitching machine Leake. Every move the Reds made today was conceding game 4.

Have they always scheduled "quadruple-headers" on week days during the LDS round?

I know they've played 3 games on one day, but I never recall 4.

I guess they're trying to compress the schedule to have the playoffs done by November.

I'm now convinced u just repeat pretty much everything u hear on tv or the radio bc that was the exact bullshit michael kay was stammering on about for a few days recently. Tell me I'm wrong and u just thought Arod player manager in florida off the top of your biased head.

It has to be the dumbest bullshit concept I ever heard. The guy isn't even liked on his own teams, is selfish in the game and life, and has zero credibility in a dugout outside of Kay stating he's "a student of the game". What fucking player isn't!

I listen to Mad Dog on Sirius all the time, and someone called in talking about how absurd it was that Yankees fans on WFAN were discussing getting Josh Johnson in a deal for A-Rod. A-Rod has the least value of any current player in MLB. Even if the Yankees paid his ENTIRE contract, who wants an aging 3B who was sat in the playoffs by his manager due to performance? Name recognition does not win baseball games.

nope...game 4/5?

spoon

The whole team did not get shut out.

It was a bunch of bums in the middle of the order.

dude, nobody but Ichiro hit overall for the yanks and I'm pretty sure Scherzer pitched fucking great in game four versus your ace!

Game #1
Fister went 6.1 innings and allowed 6 hits and 0 runs...the rest of the team combined to give up only 4 runs to through 12 innings, all by valverde in the 9th (one guy). And note, Fister out pitched postseason stud and pothole chinned Pettitte who pitched quite well.

Game #2
Sanchez went 7 innings and allowed only 3 hits and again put up a zero for runs. This time, the Tiger bullpen locked it down and they blanked the yanks. Again, the yankee starter pitched (Kuroda) well too, but was out dueled like in game 1.

Game #3
Once again a Tiger pitcher was ON, as Verlander almost had a complete game shutout if not for Nunez getting a hold of one and his high pitch count. Still, he put up 8.1 innings of one run ball (scored in the 9th) and gave up a mere 3 hits as well. Ex yank Coke came in and shut the door on the potential rally as the Tigers once again won the pitching battles.

Game #4
Well, this one wasn't even close as the yanks surprised me with their ace on the mound. They seemingly were lost out there and defeated way before the game even started. However, as I noted above, Scherzer had some sick stuff this game. He only went 5.2, but lined up 10 k's in that time (10 of 17 outs) and for the 4th time out of 4 the Tiger starter allowed one run or fewer over at least 5 innings of work. That's playoff pitching at a very high level, and his stuff was clearly pretty wicked that night. The bullpen then locked it down once again, as the yanks surprisingly went so quietly to their demise.

that's not a middle of the order problem kev, that's a whole fucking team shit pile and a record setting shit heap at that as well. That's 6 runs over 4 games, with 4 of the runs in the 9th of the first game (12 innings) off a struggling pitcher Valverde. Take that inning away and you're left with 2 runs over the next three games with that lineup and payroll...oof.

all but two batters were over .250 in the ALCS, one being Nunez with only 6 late in the series abs. Ichiro was the ONLY yankee to truly and consistently hit in this series, not the top and bottom of you lineup overall. His ONE spot hit, and the other 8 spots didn't game in and game out. Even Jeter was at just .200 when he left (only 5 abs I know), but the others make that look solid.

It's an interesting point, but I'm not so sure. While it is much easier to lock up the top power bats in the past and they would club their way to victory, pitching had plenty on roids/hgh/other just as much. It may just be harder for the money teams to simply lock in so many power bats and often club their way to victories. Now teams need to actually have balance, generate/produce runs and have versatility overall...you know, the art that was MLB before it just became an espn/public bastardized version of home run derby.

It's the same sentiment I get with NHL on scoring. Assholes with no true love of the game just want goals/scoring, fuck the art of the game overall. The amazing feel of a late 1-0 win in a goalie standoff, a huge check at center-ice that simply changes a game in a flash, a well timed utilization of the energy or checking line, a huge fight to spark a team and crowd and of course a goalie simply standing on his head and stealing a game against an offensive attack well above that of what his team put out there.

MLB too is a game of strategy again and at least for the time being, baseball is going back to a game of checks and balances and small moves having huge impacts and late game consequences. If only they'd kill the ALDS format, the all-star WS tie in and of course implement AT LEAST a 50 floor/175 cap (50/150 best and still leaves a 100 million dollar difference).

With my more favored 50/150 breakdown only 3 team would have to cut salary (one only 4 million) and 1 up salary by less than a million. A perfect world would have a smaller window, 75/150 bc I doubt the MLBPA would allow less than 150 at this point. With this situation 7 teams would have to come up, easily offsetting the 3 coming down which allows me to think the MLBPA would sign this if pushed.

The stadium hurts them ALOT.

They are all so hr happy that they just don't try for reg hits anymore.

And that just kills them in the playoffs where situational hits rule.

He's the best pitcher they have. Lets be fair, they need gate attractions other than Wright. Plus, I think he can be good for a few more years. Yeah, he throws a hard knuckler, but even if it slows down with age, he'll still be effective! It's reasons like this that make Met fans crazy. They don't keep their stars. Plus, who knows what prospect you'd get? It would have to be someone who is close to a sure thing as you can get.

If they trade him, it will need to be to a contender who feels they're a pitcher away from getting to the World Series. Someone who would be willing to part with a top prospect, along with mid level prospects. Dickey performs better in warmer/dry climates. Maybe the Dodgers? Hell, they seem to be all in with their moves this past year. Or maybe the Angels if they lose Haren and Greinke.

Idk. I am sure more people came to games when he pitches. You need stars to bring people in, along with winning of course. But if you aren't winning, stars help bring fans.

This is not the NBA. Stars don't come for other stars the come for money and winning. I Andd Dickey won't be around by the time you win. And you aren't signing anyone big for a while either.

I remember you saying you hung out with Tori Hunter a few years back and he talked about how much he does not like the Yankees.

How disappointing would you be in him if he does.

Oh there's virtually no way he resigns in Texas, much less they want him either. He's worn out his welcome there with his attitude and injuries/issues, and this offer was low in order to let him walk and still get the supplemental first round pick. No brainer there and easily translated.

Just found out & read about it the only player Marlins get I heard of might be more to do with scandal than on field play.

This is the break down, they had better build up also and there are a lot of FA out there now that turned down the first offers from their teams.

It might be better to get those types (mid level) than 2-3 upper tier players as that didn't work to well outside of the month of May.

The Marlins really should be moved. Portland, OR is perfect. Natural rival with Seattle, and they support their teams over there. Put them in the AL West and move the Astros back to the NL. Or move them to Montreal, if a new stadium can be worked out? May have to pay the Nats a fee to use the Expo name, but it would be cool the have them back.

Either way, I love that Reyes got screwed. He picked the Marlins b/c the Mets didn't offer him a contract, and also b/c they really "wanted him". Yeah Jose, they wanted you alright. That turf is not going to be good for his legs. It's nice to know there is a more inept team other than the Mets.

A few things on this overall. First, Reyes was actually in serious contention to go to the Jays last season, but they hit a roadblock bc the Jays don't like going past 5 year deals. So it's not like he got screwed in the end, yet many players didn't sign with Miami bc they wouldn't give no trade clauses.

Next, Miami's franchise is going nowhere, and to be honest they got a WHOLE lot back for mostly free agents they signed/paid for only a year. It's not even a bad way to build, IF you find a team looking into your players after. To me, the Marlins just made a HUGE leap with their system as Marisnick is a true 5 tool stud (#2 in the system), Hech a defensive wiz up the middle with speed (light bat, but ok at SS) and both pitchers they got are REAL good prospects. To be honest, I hate to see Marisnick and Nicolino go in a big way. Hech is solid, but those two are potential freaks that Miami just got. Sure it's not a done deal they will be, but upside here is awesome.

Still, I am quite happy nonetheless, as this may be the biggest news for this franchise in two decades. Yet they HAVE to resign Johnson asap. No way you let him go to free agency...NONE!

They are all nice young players, but there is the same chance they turn out to be duds. That is the risk with prospects. As a Mets fan, we all know too well about studs/great players in the system(Lastings Milledge, Fernando Martinez, Mike Pelfrey). Also, fans didn't care this year when they had good players. Expect even less fans to show up now.

Man do the Jays have speed now with Reyes, Gose, Bonafacio, Rasmus, Davis and Lawrie...and pitching for the first time in ages. Now go get Halladay back on the cheap so Drabek is just the insurance starter.

The Marlins have always been a joke and speaks to the issue with unabated free agency, who ever said they were a shining example of what's good with baseball? It only strengthens my argument, as they just got a shit ton of talent for guys they fucking bought a year prior. Outside of Johnson, the only piece to this move that came from them worth a lot.

The Jays gave up plenty to get these guys, but why not just make the financial push last year and keep your prospects? Reyes was very interested, and if you made a smaller move to get pitching and some pieces last year to start it, plenty would be interested to come to Toronto...especially if they went a little beyond other clubs. If anything Kev, it's the opposite of the Ichiro trade, even if on a much smaller scale.

It's an honest trade for both teams, just the Marlins got their farm system jump started over night via a guy leaving after this year anyway and two free agent players from a year past.

it's actually bitter sweet for me

as this build has actually been fun to watch and I'm not sure most of this couldn't have been done (similar players over time) without giving up so much

there are no guarantees with prospects, I get that, but man I was big on two of those guys going the other way...a third was just starting to get praise too. A hard throwing lefty that never gets hit and has great control at such a young age is valuable, just like the 5 tool guy they got for the OF/CF in the future (power still off it seems?)

It could also be that Spoon is the only Jays fan I know. But good for him. The Yankees are declining fast, and the AL East will be interesting as hell to watch.

The thing is, though, the Red Sox assembled all this talent - fell apart. The Dodgers got some of their talent - still didn't make the playoffs.

bottom line that I get is you can't just be building and never make an adjustment to your plan when you get to the next stage...AA's plan wasn't to be in that mode forever, it was a step in a process. It's clear Toronto has moved on to the next step. Now they could use a coach...odd how that works.

I'm with you on sticking with the young talent (especially given the differing results of both the Nats and Red Sox last season) but with the "rise" of Baltimore last year, the AL East has gotten a lot tighter (like it was when I was a kid) and, from what I've read, the Jays decided to make a bold move.
