Not a good debut for Darvish.
I kind of expect that from him as it's the first game for him in the states really and he had some BAD luck too. Overthrowing norm for a hyped up guy on nerves. I'll reserve judgement for a while, but if he is a bust I will feel better about being the team rumored to have the second highest bid in on.

not only do we have NO CLUE on Darvish yet...why do you care when the yanks spend money? even if they miss they can bury the mistake and add more
and on the Montero thing, where was he going to play? he's not a good catcher and you have 2 better behind the plate who hit close to Montero's ability and first is all locked up. DH is about to be locked up with AROD getting close to taking it over full time. And you truly need arms right now, especially starter quality types with live/power stuff...you got it. He's not the immediate, every day impact starter just yet, but be patient. I'd like to have him as he's Morrow-esque in a lot of ways. Trade made sense to me on both ends to be honest.

I understand it. But he was perfect for the park.
And I just feel if you are going to deal a top prospect like that you should be taking less of a gamble than they did with Pineda.
Idk, i hope im wrong but I just don't have a good feeling about him..

Basically he was saying he admires him for the fact hes been able to stay in power so long with so many people trying to take him down. He also said he doesnt agree with his philosophy. I dont see what was so bad about what he said. I agree with him.
Just because people are pieces of shit dont mean you cant be impressed with certain things about them. Bin Laden was a piece of garbage but how can anyone say its not impressive to evade the entire US military for a decade in countries made up of mostly caves, mountains and desserts? Im not saying I want the guy to christen my kids or anything.

Then again, would anyone have even noticed?

Guillen isn't the smartest guy with his mouth (understatement of the year), and he may not survive this to be honest. The Marlins HAD TO KNOW this was what they were getting, but saying what he did in the Castro hate capital of the world simply isn't smart in any way, shape or form. I can see them on Ozzie till the day he leaves, if not longer. And a LOT of those people in Miami have long suffered due to Castro, so it's very personal having a coach of the team you're looking to sell there say something so offensive.
How do you think someone with pro-Hitler quotes going over in New York?
Sorry, it's as dumb as you can be based on what he said overall, only to be trumped by where he said it.

A successful pitcher has a decent winning pct over many years. Japanese Pitchers have a different pitching rotation in their home countries, when they pitch in MLB they have to adjust their mechanics. Many teams there use a 7 man rotation

This isn't even it overall. It's Canada's only team, sells plenty of merch and only needs a little winning to get the fans back now as the strike and steroid issues are lost in the minutia of time. Sorry, but this place was packed from the late 70s on until that fucking strike, then they decided to get pushed around by money with the spanks and sox, and the system is to blame too. Yet now they are poised to do something about it finally. If they didn't fold in the last fucking 20, it's not going to happen.

It's simple, they aren't going to spend just to spend bc the other teams in division do. On top of that, they routinely speak to the point they'll spend up to the point of at least making some profit and their first responsibility is to keep this team afloat and find other ways than spending foolishly to compete. I think they hold out hope of some better MLB system, and will push their agenda more and more as their mlb face/image grows. Yet right now, they and I am content to keep on AA's plan. It's been a very solid approach to this system, as opposed to flushing money left and right bc you have it. I think they'll be able to spend more soon as well due to their now increasing attendance, interest and support by Rogers overall. They took over at the turn of the century, but really have got their people in place now and even bought the stadium mid 2004. Sportsnet is now putting a huge focus on the Jays as well, which puts more asses in the seats and helps develop fans too.

They don't spend money because they're a massive corporation that just uses the team for marketing and to make even more money. Why would they spend more?
They've been smart about it, at least. But let's not act like Rogers is doing anything other than watching their profits here.

I will bc they have been building this team up since coming here and will spend when needed. I can honestly say they spent plenty up to now being they were never really close or only a piece or two away from top line competing. This new WC and young exciting team now changes that and we'll see. The constant Canada wide promotional push of late, sportnet full time schedule and so much more are HUGE improvements and they seriously are pushing this team now in a big way. It is KILLING the push SD and Colorado get respectively by the Spanos and Kroenke families overall. I'm seeing good things here.

I think success overall can have a lot of different factors. For example Mike Mussina didnt win a world series or Cy Young but pitched 18 seasons or so with 270 wins.
Another Example is Mattingly, Even though borderline HoF he had 5 excellent years won an MVP and 9 Gold gloves.
The whole Japanese pitcher thing really doesnt make sense fiscally. I know DiceK won a WS in his 1st year but the long term investment was a bust. Boston spent a ton of money not only on the contract but also just to talk to his former team.

Quebec fans to this day pretty much support the Avs, but now they just want a team of their own again and I can't blame them. I guess they wish they coughed up some money for a new rink last time in the end, bc getting a team back isn't so easy. Yet how funny will it be if the Yotes come next year as the Cup champs!? That's why i hated the Pineda deal.
They dealt a stud prospect (granted he is off to a slow start but its Seattle) who was tailor made for your park for a big if in Pineda.
When you take into effect the poor track record of them developing young arms, Its just a huge gamble.
Nova has won 15 in a row but a lot of that can be attributed to run support.

Once Philly gets their big bats and Cliff Lee back they will remain a favorite but I will say all the pressure is on them and Miami. The Nats are going out there and just playing and not worrying about being that team to take it all. I thought they would be a contender for the postseason starting next year, I know its late April but they are holding their own in a tough division.

Zim got 6 year $100 million extension ( I think it totals out at $150 with whats left on his previous deal)
Werth 7 years $126
Gio 5 years $42 million
LaRoche 3 year $35 million
So yes they spent a lot too, sometimes it takes a year to pay off. It is also still pretty early and although Miami spent a lot too I like their signings better. Werth, LaRoche are not worth close to what they got and to be honest I dont like how much they gave Zim either.

Yeah if he hadn't admitted to it he probabyl wouldn't have been suspended, which is just idiotic. Cole's mouth has gotten him in trouble before.
One of the things he said was about being old school and the Nats GM jumped all over it. But I have to agree, it does seem kindof old school to just say 'yeah I threw at him.'

He came out and said he hit him on purpose. Of course MLB was going to do something about it. It could have been any batter and MLB would have pretended to suspend the pitcher.
A suspension is a suspension no matter what you think of the logistics of it. It's a bullshit statement overall, I could care less what you call it. People get hit every fucking day and just bc he said he hit the guy it's a call...stupid.

What could they do? You can't yell "fuck you boss!" and think nothing will happen.
I really hope they start suspending pitcher a minimum of 10 games soon, though.

I'm actually not sure on it, but I do think it's only common sense to lose 5/162 of your pay for a 5 game suspension right? Like in the NHL and NFL? The fine is listed separately so I'd love for someone to chime in for sure on it. I think it just means he got a suspension AND fine, like many in the NHL. I could be wrong here, and if so MLB is worse than I thought.

I just assumed the MLBPA had so much power that they didn't lose money when suspended.

So, I keep seeing he was "fined", but no number. This article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/prishe/2012/05/08/cole-hamels-pays-a-468750-price-for-honesty/) is the closest thing I found, but that amount is only if he missed a start, which he won't.
If he did lose half a million dollars for it, I would think that is absolutely ridiculous and overstepping by the MLB.

That article actually seemed ridiculous. Cole Hammels is being talked about because what happened, yes but he isnt now ranked higher or better then the other 2. We dont know whats in Hammrels mind but I highly doubt he hit Bryce to get national attention for free agency. For one reason it wont help him and this whole story will be a non issue by the time the season is over. What do they think his agent is going to call up other teams and say he deserves more money for hitting Bryce and stupidly admitting to it? No I doubt it.
Stay classy Philly.
Meanwhile, former Phillie Jayson Werth said he could hear Phillies fans taunting him as he walked off the field Sunday night with a broken left wrist, suffered after he slid to catch a fly ball. Werth underwent surgery Monday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., performed by Richard Berger, to repair a distal radius fracture. He will miss roughly 10 to 12 weeks.
In an e-mail to the Post, Werth, a member of the 2008 World Series champion Phillies, vowed he would return, motivated to keep Phillies fans from ever seeing another title parade.
“After walking off the field feeling nauseous knowing my wrist was broke and hearing Philly fans yelling ‘You deserve it,’ and, ‘That’s what you get,’ I am motivated to get back quickly and see to it personally those people never walk down Broad Street in celebration again,” Werth wrote (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/nationals-phillies-rivalry-intensifies-after-cole-hamels-drills-bryce-harper-with-pitch/2012/05/07/gIQAX2P58T_story.html).

He hit him because the phillies have been playing like shit and blowing leads etc. He's just trying to shake it up. I would believe he's trying to show he's able to anchor a rotation and be a leader, but I doubt this is all a machiavellian scheme to up his free agency price. I dont think he meant ranked higher as in everyone thinks hes better then those other 2 now. I think he meant hes gotten his exposure level up alot more then it was. I mean in 08 he was World Series MVP, but once Halladay and Lee got here you hardly hear his name anymore, even though hes pitched brilliantly the last 2 years. I think what he was saying was this was his way of getting the country to remember, hes still here, and still pitching great.

I hate when pitchers get game suspensions
Everyone knows that starters pitch every fifth game soca five game suspension is really at most a 1 game suspension vs a position player who gets the same suspension will actually get a 5 game suspension
So starters suld get a start suspension not game

Agreed. I guess one could argue "with if the team is getting blown out or it's an extra inning game and you need to use one of your starters." But still, pitcher suspensions are dumb.

Not sure about that, But in regards to Anaheim what a disappointment. The hype of Pujols and hes now sub .200 They are near the bottom of almost every offensive category, they cant score runs and cant move the runner over like in previous years.
Was listening to Mike Francesa and he made a good point. Teixiera has 5 HR and the media wants to run him out of town, Pujols is a 240mm man and is subpar.

I wouldn't think so ny's is much more brutal ESP with Yankees were nothing short of a title is a failure
Also every team in Boston has won at least one title in the last ten years where the yanks and giants are the only ny teams to do it
Knicks haven't won since 70s
Mets since 86
