Cant they get a more energetic majority leader?
It is racist because you picked a black person for that without even thinking.

Also right now the GOP in the House is killing the Sandy Relief bill.
Wow, what a bunch of shit.
There is a ton of pork in the bill, It should be redone. I'm sure relief bills in the past had pork, but might as well start now.
If we had a better tax system, States could keep more money and have resources to fund their own relief. Red states receive a lot of largesse from the Blue ones. Wanna end that? Reform our fucked up tax laws

It was only a few days before the nation would go over the fiscal cliff, no bipartisan agreement was in sight, and Reid had just publicly accused Boehner of running a “dictatorship” in the House and caring more about holding onto his gavel than striking a deal.
“Go f— yourself,” Boehner sniped as he pointed his finger at Reid, according to multiple sources present.
Reid, a bit startled, replied: “What are you talking about?”
Boehner repeated: “Go f— yourself.”

As for better climates. Ive been to Florida many times. My home station was in Cali while in the Marine Corps. Dont want to bake in 120 degree temps in AZ
Our 50th state has great weather and adorned with tons of very nice looking Polynesian and Japanese women. Who wouldn't want to be there?

I thought this quote was from the Onion, however Obama actually said this
"While I will negotiate over many things, I will not have another debate with this Congress about whether or not they should pay the bills they have already racked up," Obama said before he headed to Hawaii to resume an interrupted vacation.
Whoever the speaker is, should tell him that he was addressing the 112th congress and theres a new one convening today and that the President has no power in regards to the debt ceiling. All spending, borrowing is the power of the legislative branch and that the so called constitutionall scholar should actually read the constitution.

Turns out there were a bunch of goodies in the FC bill doled out to NASCAR, Hollywood and other outlets. Also for every 1 dollar levied in taxes, 41 is spent. I always thought Obama wanted a balanced approach.

For every dollar cut, there is a $41 increase in spending.
Since there are really no cuts and the way they explain a cut ,really isnt a cut so its still unbalanced and DC fuzzy accounting.

I guess you forgot to mention what the purpose of the House and Senate are for and which each chambers duties are.
Want less politicians being bought and paid for by corporations and special interests? Repealing of the 17th amendment is a start
That's such bullshit. What you are essentially saying is that the public isn't good enough to vote for their electeds.
Instead, you want appointed officials to represent you & vote on legislation. That's just fucking stupid.
And it rewards business as usual. Politicians who select their voters by gerrymandering district lines would get to piss on the will of the people in state wide elections. That's just fucking ludricious.

I'm in agreement that we should kill the dark money. However I don't see how repealing the 17th Amendment is going to change that. In fact, all it would do is drive the dark money into other races & create new corruption/cronyism for those being appointed.

So lets look at WF's idea in application.
In Wisconsin, we just had a Senate race in which Tammy Baldwin (D) defeated Tommy Thompson (R) by 5%.
In this state, we just had assembly races in which the D's received 200K more votes than the R's. However due to skillfull gerrymandering the R's control the assembly 60-39. (It's really good districting --- gotta give them credit).
So that legislature, which a majority of the people do not support would appoint a candidate which the majority of the people did not support.
See my problem with this idea?

Im not dismissing the dark money on a state level but the cronyism is more on a federal one. Companies like Cargill, ADM and others benefit more from the feds.
Also If the 17th amendment was repealed it might drive out people on extremes of both parties. Jeff Sessions and Barbara Boxer probably wouldnt be Senators

Before the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment, senators were elected by the individual state legislatures. However, problems with repeated vacant seats due to the inability of a legislature to elect senators, intrastate political struggles, and even bribery and intimidation gradually led to a growing movement to amend the Constitution to allow for the direct election of senators.

I think Bill O'Reilly said he was against it cause then the liberal cities would decide all the elections. but the states that have the biggest liberal cities get the most electoral votes and so it kinda already works that way anyway. if there is enough people in those cities to wash out all the other area combined, then it would already wash them out in the electoral cause it would bring enough numbers to carry the state anyway.
I think they should just have it be popular vote, knock off this whole electoral college bullshit. every single other election is done by popular vote, including house and senate, which lets be honest, are WAY more important than the president is in terms of shit actually happening.

I see the point, but the problem I have with that is you take away the checks on those states. if NY, NJ, Ca and say Floridas house reps all got together on something, it would be VERY HARD to find enough votes from the other side to stop them from passing it. The problem if you weighted the senate the same way is then you could have a few states essentially controlling everything.
the way it is now, the other states have enough power through the senate to stop the few big states from gettin overzealous, while the big states still have enough influence to lean on the smaller states to go there way and get shit done.
i think thinks would just get MORE fucked up if we let the 5 biggest states run everything.

i actually was thinkin about something that i wanna get opinions on of the people here. right now we give power to the states in terms of reps based on population. What if we delegated the power based on money for the Union. I watched some dumb 2 min video on youtube about whether Texas could actually leave the Union and survive on its own. And it gave this bit on info:
Washington, Oregon, Nevada, California, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, NY, NJ, Connecticut, Mass, and NH all pay more money into the federal government than they receive from them in aid. (essentially, it was to say they could all survive on their own and do as well as, if not better, than they do right now as states.).
The rest get more money then they pay in.
In my opinion, the ones who pay more in should have WAY more say in what happens with said money than the ones who actually take more than they give. I would do it that way

ok im gonna attempt to end this argument by moving to a new topic and probably starting a new argument.
What do you guys think of popular vote deciding who is president and throwing out the electoral college and why do you think that way?
I think Bill O'Reilly said he was against it cause then the liberal cities would decide all the elections. but the states that have the biggest liberal cities get the most electoral votes and so it kinda already works that way anyway. if there is enough people in those cities to wash out all the other area combined, then it would already wash them out in the electoral cause it would bring enough numbers to carry the state anyway.
I think they should just have it be popular vote, knock off this whole electoral college bullshit. every single other election is done by popular vote, including house and senate, which lets be honest, are WAY more important than the president is in terms of shit actually happening.
pop vote fan here
the electoral college keeps states in line for some love overall, bc without it, nobody would waste much time in Wyoming, the Dakotas and the like. elections would be dominated by the moderate to extremely populated areas of country that show up and vote. so there is a reason for the way we work the senate and the electoral college, this is just one of those reasons despite my feelings. to me, the voice of the people overall is the key, not segmented and then tallied artificially even when linked to population when we could just cut out the middle man, but the smaller states would absolutely hate this idea
another good aspect of this though would be the effect on swing states during election cycles, as they would no longer dominate and take from the overall US needs and issues.
The people are uninformed, and would be misled by a few designing men.
that's some of the thinking behind electors and other ideas instead of the popular vote. it's a disgusting take, yet unfortunately very true. yet what's the difference at this point?
spoon
01-04-2013, 06:45 PM
wait why is the senate more powerful than the house? dont you need both for everything? Isnt their power 50/50?
to me 1/100th a voice in the Senate is much more powerful than 1/435th, so in that respect alone it's more powerful. also, they have different powers and are set in a basic check on each other overall, yet the Senate is more distinguished. sure the house has its powers as well, but once again, 1/435th a voice...when everyone gives a shit to actually vote.
The Senate is both a more deliberative and more prestigious body than the House of Representatives, due to its longer terms, smaller size, and statewide constituencies, which historically led to a more collegial and less partisan atmosphere. The Senate is sometimes called the "world's greatest deliberative body."

nah i understand WHY the senate was set up how it was, I just don't agree with it for this generation, much less how smaller states can hold up the most basic needs of this country in areas the Congress (the right proportional vote per state pop) isn't involved. so in some areas, it's 2 per only and out of whack in my mind. To me a better way would be to tier the states perhaps...like 3 senators for the biggest 1/3 of states, 2 for the middle tier and 1 for the lowest tier, based solely on population. just tossing the idea out there, haven't really thought about it that much so there very well are issues here too. a decent idea though 1-17 tier 1 / 18-34 tier 2 / 34-50 tier 3
looking at that though does worry me about the voice of our lower populated states overall...but that doesn't take away my concern on the exact equal say in the senate bt Wyoming and California being ok as an example
one thing it might actually help though is party allegiances...meaning states would have to work together despite party ties if they were to get what they needed or thought correct through, versus everything being based on party as it truly is now. this may cause as many problems as it helps though. again, just tossing wf...i mean shit on the wall.
basically I think the smaller states have too much a say/power in things that they hardly are involved in often...yet I don't want to swing that the other way as you speak giving too much power to the big city / populous states

perhaps some rewards and penalties for being on either side of the spectrum, but how to you penalize the states in the most need to begin with? The only way I could see is via funds/support and voice, and that would drive them more into the ground.
financial basis is not a very solid approach for me, although it has validity in theory IF it wouldn't impact those in need and states with needs most. i could only imagine making Detroit worse, when it needs help now and areas hit with storms and disaster would take more hits simply based on events out of their control when they take in huge funds. there are many issues with that type system, but it does scream to how hypocritical some states are with their political rhetoric

The ratification of the 17th amendment was at the same time as the 16th amendment and the formation of the federal reserve. It all ties in.
The Creation of the fed was a payback from Wilson to the backers of his campaign, thus having a private bank control the money supply and creation, there was a need for an income tax due to Wilsons appettite for growing the size and scope of government. Now the 17th amendment is passed for direct election of Senators for people to vote themselves a pay raise on the backs of other states, This is why you have red states that are usually poorer getting largesse from more wealthy states. Since the US isn't a democracy this was a way for it to become closer to being one. In the past 100 years, the value of the dollar has collapsed. The gov't has become bigger, more unconstitutional programs have been rammed thru and Senators have become like representatives by bringing pork back into their state. Example WV. Almost everything is named after former klansman Robert Byrd. The ratification of the 17th amendment has become a giant money grab. FEMA is another wasteful bureaucracy. Another department now incorporated under DHS.
There were natural disasters before FEMA was created. The problem lies in with the overall tax system and how the federal government has expanded over the last 100 years. If anything the fed gov't should be the one to step in as a last resort.
The debt ceiling and all these other periodic events like the FC are man made events. So in a couple of months both the WH and both houses of congress are going to have to tackle the Debt ceiling and sequestration.

It has as much chance as your wish of repealing the 17th Amendment.

He wasn't really for gays in the military .Hey, his opinion
And Israel doesn't like him because he sees Israel as a country in the Middle East that we have to deal with , among OTHER countries, as opposed to a country that tells him what to do. So, of course, that makes him anti-semetic to the Jewish lobby .

A pro-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender group issued a statement today urging President Barack Obama not to nominate Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense.
"GetEQUAL strongly opposes the potential nomination of Chuck Hagel to become the next Secretary of Defense. Hagel has, time and time again, taken every opportunity to lambast and denigrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans, and the Cabinet is no place for this kind of disrespect," writes the chair GetEQUAL's board Tanya Domi.

Trillion dollar coin comes from the Constitution allowing the Mint/Treasurer to mint coins as they see fit, backed up by the 14th amendment section 4
If it were to happen, it'd be $1t because it's a nice round number I guess. The market doesn't care about inflation right now (yields on treasuries are negative or effectively negative right now) and $1t is a drop in the bucket for keeping the largest security instrument in the world up and running as the global economy depends on it.
With that being said, it won't happen because of the optics. It looks bad to the common consumer because the Democrats are doing a poor job of portraying it as the Republicans refusing to pay the credit card bill because it's too large.
Instead they're hemming and hawing while the GOP hopes the Democrats can kill off some earned benefits programs because it helps the bottom line of corporations when you suppress wages and quality of life.

Krugman is a Keynesian so his philosophy towards economics is flawed. I run from no one and especially not from you.
Krugman was the genius who said the Stimulus wasn't big enough. Krugman was an economic advisor for Enron.
Krugman came up with the plan to stimulate the economy by building up defense mechanisms in case of an alien attack .
Your petty words of simple and stupid carry no weight. instead of wanting to simplify the tax code, make it more archaic and add more pages to an already bloated flawed system and hence the debt racks up and money continues to go get pissed away on wasteful unnecessary programs., wars and everything else this incompetent gov't latches onto
Yes monetize our debt even more. Why not go for broke and go for a quadrillion or quintillion. We always have the federal reserve who can just buy all that.

You know it's done by auction right? People are buying up our debt and clamoring to do so because American sovereign debt is the largest single security instrument in the world and unless the GOP is hell-bent on destroying the global economy, will continue to be so for the foreseeable future.

I know that however, we are the biggest holders of that debt so of course there are ways that Treasury and the Fed can continue the scheme, However that can not continue to happen without a collapse.
The worlds reserve currency is still the dollar but also, that party can not last forever. It's not just the GOP who wants to destroy the economy.
