the teams in the eastern conference stand no chance against teams like the red wings, vancover or SJ,this wont even be close,i say vancover wins this 4 games to maybe 1,sorry bean town fans but dump and grind doesnt work against a team from the superior conference

Thrashers are moving to Winnipeg. Press Conference is scheduled for 11am Mountain Time.

They'll stay in the Southeast Division next year, and then the league will realign.

Maybe they can get more than 400 people to show up this time? (http://news.google.ca/newspapers?id=xMoPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=V44DAAAAIBAJ&pg=2526,2867991)

But seriously, this is a really dumb move for the NHL. The Thrash didn't fail because the fans didn't care about hockey, the Thrash failed because of (a) shitty owners and (b) complete and utter mismanagement. They've been to one playoff series in 11 years, and had blunder after blunder (letting Kovy walk for a bag of beans, drafting Patrik Stefan, letting Hossa walk for a bag of beans, trading Braydon Coburn for Alexei Zhitnik), and terrible tragedies (Dany Heatley).

Fans don't go to see losers. They didn't in Pittsburgh, DC, or Chicago in the early 2000s, and now they're three of the league's "signature" franchises. Look at how the place rocks in Carolina or Tampa or Nashville (or even Florida in 96) when the team's winning and doing well. You're leaving a top ten US market for a place that no one wants to play (Winnipeg), with a tiny corporate base that isn't anywhere close to Atlanta's, whose building will be the smallest in the NHL at just over 15k (smaller than Nassau, which the NHL has been trying to flee for decades). It's beyond stupid to me.

Here's Winnipeg's average attendance from 90-96:

12,931 12,931 13,550 13,297, 13,013 11,316

At the time, the state was more eager to get the Patriots. They offered to build a stadium along the CT River in Hartford. They came close but the deal fell through when Foxboro made some concessions to Rober Kraft.

Can't see them ever coming back there. Market's too small (third horse in a two horse race between NY and Boston), and there's too many other viable places they could put a franchise (Kansas City would be where I would go, also some talk of Seattle or Portland, even though they don't have a building and the Canucks would raise holy hell, and the Toronto people were even screaming today about why there should be a team in Hamilton, and I haven't even mentioned Quebec, which would be an even worse option than Winnipeg).

There's three franchises, IMO, in real big trouble. Buffalo and Ottawa are off the danger list because even though they've both gone bankrupt, their ownership is stable, but I'd be super-worried about the situations in Florida (where they haven't made the playoffs since 2000, longest drought in league history, and their TV numbers are south of cheese), CBJ (where the franchise needs to win, and badly), and the Isles (who probably are going to move if they don't get the lighthouse project).

How is QC worse than Winnepeg? Up until the team left they packed the house. It was simply the weak Canadian dollar, and the fact they weren't going to get a new arena that led the team to leave. Both those places are better than FLA, ATL and PHOENIX.

Winnipeg at least has a half-assed building in MTS Centre. Quebec has NO building, unless you count Le Colisee, which was built over 60 years ago, and the place from which the Nords fled in 96. Quebec is the smallest market in North America outside of Green Bay. It's also unwaveringly French, which scares off a lot of English-speaking players (see Lindros, Eric).

The Panthers, while being unbelievably shitty, at least have stable ownership. Phoenix is owned by the league, which has made clear it will not sell to parties interested in moving the team out of Arizona, as is its right, and I've pointed out why moving the Thrashers to WPG is unbelievably stupid. All three of those markets are much better options than WPG or QUE due to their relative sizes, populations, and, most importantly, quality and quantity of corporate sponsors.

No one shows at the sunbelt games besides Tampa bay. QC is building an arena. 15,000 in 'peg or QC is better than 10,000 in fla or phoenix. And don't even start on tv ratings. Lindros was a bitch pussy.

No one shows at the sunbelt games besides Tampa bay.

They show up when teams are winning (and no one showed up in TB during the Koules/Barrie/Lawton/Melrose era). See Florida in 96. See Nashville and Carolina. See Atlanta in 06 (and by the way, the Thrashers averaged more attendance during their time in ATL than Winnipeg did in their last six years).

Like I said, no one goes to see losers. No one came to DC, Pittsburgh, or Chicago when all three teams are shitty. And franchise issues aren't just "Sun Belt" problems. The Sabres and Senators both have gone bankrupt and had ownership issues in the last few years, as did the Penguins (who came thisclose to moving). The Isles have a ton of issues. Last time I checked, none of those franchises are in the Sun Belt.

QC is building an arena.

"Building an arena" and actually "having an arena" are two completely, massively different things. It usually takes years just to get the whole funding issue sorted out, namely, whether the taxpayers of the local province/county/state want to pay the necessary taxes to build and maintain it.

15,000 in 'peg or QC is better than 10,000 in fla or phoenix.

No, it's not. Market size-wise, QC and WPG have nowhere near the advertising muscle and corporate base of any team in the Sun Belt. There are 633k people in the WPG area, which puts it somewhere in the US between Baltimore and Memphis, which is just shy of El Paso. Phoenix has close to a million and a half people in the city proper. Miami-Dade County has over two and a half million people. Besides, Canadian viewers don't count in the US ratings, so you're essentially cutting your audience in half, which is why you don't see Canadian teams on NBC unless they "have" to be on there (see the 07 Cup Finals between Ottawa and Anaheim for how ugly that can get).

Lindros was a bitch pussy

Bullshit. Dude had like six concussions (in a two year period), and Bobby Clarke was such an absolute crazy asshole he questioned Lindros for not flying home with a COLLAPSED FUCKING LUNG which would have killed him. Fuck that guy.

That project is DEAD. Has been for a year now. County Exec. Mangano unveiled a new plan with New arena and a minor league ball park across from it. $400 million to do it all($350 for a new arena). Vote is August 1st. Public vote too. People feel it will pass due to Isles fans and union workers wanting it. Plus, it's during summer and who wants to go to the polls on a summer day? If it passes, shovel in ground 2012, arena opened for 2015 season. Isles would sign lease until 2045. Yesterday the legislature voted on when to have the Arena Vote. Mangano wanted Aug. 1st and it won by a 11-7 vote. 10 repubs and 1 dem votes YES. The 7 Dems who voted No claim they still need details. I'm sure they will get something out of this to get a YES later on. If the Aug. 1st referendum passes, then they vote again and need 13 votes for Super majority.

Mangano says taxes won't go up if this passes. If not, then Coliseum is knocked down, taxes go up. Wang is offering to cover any dollar amount that goes over the $350 for the Arena. He is also offering to pay the election costs if he wins. It's $2 million to have the vote Aug. 1st.

Sonics left Key Arena because it's a dump (built in the early 1960s, even though it was renovated in the early 90s). Highly doubt they'd put an NHL team there (it only seats 11k for hockey). The Rose Garden would be a pretty good option, but then there would still be the issue of the Canucks throwing a shit fit, although I think they'd throw less of a shit fit about Portland than they would about Seattle.

I'm not sure why, but Vancouver seems to have decided that leaving their defensemen at home when they travel east is a good idea.

I'm fairly certain you need defense when you play hockey.

...and yes, being an Islander fan I am a Luongo apologist. But c'mon, he needs SOME fucking help.

Canucks just look sluggish. They ring the post on a power play and nobody's there for the rebound. They finally get control of the puck and blow a pass that clears the zone.

What's your deal Wade?

This game's over. Vancouver will mount an effort for the first ten minutes of the third. Then they'll pull back, rest their players, not risk injuries, and look to game seven in Vancouver.

Ten minutes to score two or three goals. This one's over Johnny.

And the burning of whatever that they were doing in Vancouver...wow. I never got the reasoning for burning things or rioting because a team loses. But I guess Canada just wanted to show they have the same enthusiasm as crazy countries around the world. And LA.

It appears as if the Rangers will be unable to buy out the final season of Chris Drury's contract because of a degenerative condition in the captain's left knee that apparently will render him medically unable to play next season, The Post has learned.
While Drury has yet to file the necessary paperwork, sources report he plans to do so. The Rangers, who had been planning a buyout, could file a grievance against Drury, but that is a remote possibility, at best.

Flyers have reportedly signed Bryzgalov to a deal for 7 at 7 per.

Lots of people speculating that means Carter's on his way out of town. Either way, probably means someone important has to go there.

I don't think it's a good deal for the Flyers. Bryz is a pretty good goalie, but he hasn't been that good in the playoffs, and look at this stat: (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Is-Bryzgalov-worth-7-million-a-year-Apparently?urn=nhl-wp7687#remaining-content)

But let's take a closer look at those accomplishments. Our buddy JP passed along a note about Bryzgalov's even-strength save percentage over the last three seasons in relation to that of his backup netminders:

Bryzgalov: .92587
His primary backups: .92589

I can't see this ending well.

Highly doubt that with Barrie and Elliot ready to step up into the NHL with a similar skill set to Liles. I think that was the reason for this trade and to get a 2nd rounder to help with a package of picks/players to get J. Bernier from LA since they seem to be going for it this year. I'm holding my breath! I would LOVE it if we got him for the 2nd rounder and some lower level prospect. We'll see. I feel it though, I really do.

My thoughts on the pick is it'll be Ladeskog or Nugent-Hopkins...pending on who the Oilers pick or who they ship the pick to does.

Huberdeau and Larson have outside shots, but I don't see them going after Larson after getting Johnson, not to mention all his injury issues this year in Sweden. And Huberdeau is yet another grit light player the Avs simply have enough of right now. His hands are awesome though so I wouldn't be totally pissed.

My guess is Ladeskog at 2, and a tough/big stay at home D man in the mold of Foote at 11. My hopes are they move the 2nd rounder and more for a GT ready now to step in as a #1 or at least closer than what we've had.

Bernier, Rask, Schneider or a plethora of guys stuck behind Rinne in Nashville.

Nugent-Hopkins could go third? Thought that's what my local newspaper story had. My team has that pick then two more from first 47 picks. And seven more overall. Along with 47 Million cap space. Hope this works out for the cats it's been a long drought.

Do they trade for a younger goalie with Pickard a year or two away or do they get an older goalie as a bridge until he is up.

I doubt N-H makes it past the first pick, but I have heard the Oil are shopping that first pick around for more picks. We'll see, bc I bet they still take him or Larson. The big problem with N-H is he's only 150 lbs soaking wet at this point and not exactly safe to bring up immediately without some huge risk. He'll put on weight in time, but 150 in the NHL isn't going to be good if he even comes close to putting his head down.

It's a huge question, but Bernier is a HUGE prospect and has already shown he can handle the NHL game with 22 starts last year in LA.

Perhaps they will bridge, but since Roy I'm pretty fucking sick of waiting for a true #1. I say make the move now and be done with it. Pickard is not a sure thing or even close as well.

John Michael Liles to the Leafs for a pick.

I wonder if this means that the Avs will be picking Larsson.

Another thought just occurred to me though, wasn't Lidstrom from Phoenix his D partner in the past? I believe it's his buddy and definitely from Sweden like Larsson (always forget that second S sorry). Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Do you think Stastny will get traded this weekend?

Lots of rumors out there about it no doubt and I'm torn. However, on his current year he's simply NOT worth that contract and I truly think he's a soft player too. You have to be much closer to 100 pts (especially in this new NHL) to play so light.

It all depends on the take from it so I'll reserve judgement on it until then but do see the reasoning. If they do another Hunwick for Cohen I'll fucking go nuts! :furious:

I WANT AN NHL ready goalie now!

Yah just wishful thinking bc the Devs still need to clear up some space for any kind of flexibility. However, that was the easiest pick of the draft at this point.

Now that the top 4 that separated themselves are gone, here comes a LOT of players with good skill but not quite at the elite level. Hence the reason I see the Avs getting a steal on a d first d man at 11. Might be a little early, but I see Siemens coming to Colorado. The kid has some O upside as well, but the Avs need grit and physicality right now in a HUGE way. Foote was too old last year to fill the need, and pretty much everyone else that plays that way on the team is way too slow to even get the hit.

We'll see.

Only one D gone too after 6 is a good thing for Colorado.

Now Sherman has until the 3rd f'n round to go get one. Staz for Bernier or Schneider? Obviously more would move around, but you HAVE to think Bernier at least is on the block with the moves LA already made. They are putting it all out there and need to move Bernier to get another piece or picks for more ammo if they really are gonna make a splash. Kopitar, Richards and Staz down the middle is pretty fucking unreal, especially if they add some d first d.

Let's be honest, Quick isn't going anywhere and is young as hell. He'll probably be the US starter 2014 at this point too.

Are the Kings going to want to pay their 3rd line center 6.5 mil a season? I'd much rather Schneider but will they trade within the division. I think they will get one this weekend whomever it is.

Well it didn't happen at the time I posted it. I'm still shaking my head bc Vokoun couldn't have been much more or much longer and now we lost two picks. I'm sorry, could Bernier or Schneider been more costly overall? I doubt it highly and can't figure out why a fa signing at this point isn't enough. Now I have to hope I was wrong thinking Varlamov was the worst of the three in Washington and he responds to number one time.

Oh and Fallon, if they gave up that much HE BETTER BE the #1 goalie. If he falters terribly Giggy steps in I'm sure (or injuries), but I think it's a good depth pickup and a guy of similar build who can probably help V's development.

He's going to be playing under Tortorella which seems like a good move for him. And the give and go he can have with Gaborik should get him points.

Yes I do. They look bigger with more offence on all lines now. I may even stay awake longer watching the games now.

And the rats? Ed Jovanovski is back so who knows. Not that he will be a huge boost. But he can mentor the many new young daft picks that were obtained (10 picks overall 3 in the top 43. )

Oh and it's 1 year! Unreal!
