After tonight Stammer is the first in the league to forty goals, his third consecutive season of at least forty. He also became the fifth player in league history to have three forty goal seasons before the age of twenty-three, joining Hawerchuk, Gretzky, Lemieux and Ovechkin.

what happened to goal scoring ??

50 goals is a rarity yet back in the day routinely teammates sometimes even 3 plus would score fifty

Devils acquire Zidlicky from Wild. (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=618815)

The New Jersey Devils gave their blue line a boost on Friday by acquiring veteran defenseman Marek Zidlicky from the Minnesota Wild for three players and draft picks after Zidlicky waived his no-trade clause.

The Wild will receive defenseman Kurtis Foster, forwards Nick Palmieri and Stephane Veilleux, as well as a second-round pick in 2012 that the Devils previously acquired from Washington and a conditional third-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Wild will get that pick if the Devils make the Eastern Conference Finals this spring and Zidlicky plays in 75 percent of New Jersey's games in the first two rounds.

I don't mind this deal. I thought it would happen when I heard about Elias talking with him but I wasn't sure what the Devils would give up. The draft picks to me aren't a big deal. The second is nice, but the Devils are pretty good at finding talent in the later rounds anyway. Foster moving sort of surprises me just because they just got him, but despite one real solid game that I can remember he hasn't been all that effective. Palmieri kind of bothers me because I think he has potential to be a solid player, but he's been shakey this year.

Old news is so exciting. This has been the standing rumor for the past three weeks.

What's worse is, when you posted it, the Rangers have backed out of trade talks with CBJ because they aren't giving up Stepan, MDZ, Kreider, or McDonagh for Nash.

I'm not saying he isn't a great player.

Would I like them to get him in the summer? sure.

But I just do not want them to mess with this team right now.

I have seen many times where teams going great makes a trade and they start sucking.

i get that but nash is a great character guy and leader, team canada has stated many times he's been HUGE with them in the locker room

he knows how to play in every area out there and has a knack for dirty goals bc of his size and ability in front...you know, playoff hockey

he'd help ANY team and surrounded by that team it could have been the final piece to a Cup

now I just have you as a strong team...one of many and the East is TOUGH!

They also wanted some pieces of our game that are strengths on the team, young Defensemen like Del Zotto.

I do not think Doubinsky is really that great and will never be Nash so him i would not really care if they traded him.

But yea, you could be right on him being the final piece, but it always scares me when teams make moves mid year especially involving players on the team and not just prospects.

well that's just it, they seeminly wanted dubi (who will pick up the O but does everything else well) and mostly kids like Krieder and others/picks...who knows? Yet even one Cup is worth it to me. It's been what, 18 years now? You have the GT, some key D pieces, but the O is playoff weak...especially when leaning on Gabby in physical hockey games with little to protect him. Nash would have been HUGE! I hope the Avs make a play for him in the future, yet it seems Columbus is going to rebuild around him.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post tells us how high, as New York Rangers GM Glen Sather offered a significant package that didn't come close to this asking price:

He is believed to have offered the Blue Jackets a five-asset package including Brandon Dubinsky, 21-year-old top defense prospect Tim Erixon, highly regarded 2011 first-round draft choice J.T. Miller and 2010 second-round pick Christian Thomas, along with a 2012 first-round selection in order to make it happen as yesterday's 3 p.m. trade deadline approached.
There is a difference though between lusting and sinning, the latter the impulse Sather ultimately resisted by rejecting Howson's laughable demand the package include Dubinsky — plus either Ryan McDonagh or Michael Del Zotto — plus either Derek Stepan or Carl Hagelin — plus 2009 first-rounder Chris Kreider, the Boston College winger who conceivably could join the Rangers when his college season ends — plus a 2012 first-round selection.

Howson is stupid for not taking that deal.

spoon

Howson is stupid for not taking that deal.

especially after opening his mouth about Nash asking for a trade and putting it all on the player staying now and still wearing the C

bottom line, Nash is a great piece and very well could put a team over the top...yet they surely were asking a whole lot and more

if the Rangers never put it together and some of these kids don't come through much more than a cheap fa pickup, then the q will always be what if? bc the rangers are pretty solid right now but do lack that up front scoring strength in tight spots and power forward that Nash brings and more...playoff scoring is tough to come by and he's the type of scorer that comes through in the playoffs

If it was the deal Sather offered, I would not have any problem with it at all, because as you said, Nash is a stud and would be perfect for that team.

But trading Young Dmen strengths that play for them right now with the deal Columbus wanted would be just too much to pay for him.

COSTAS: "Worst mistake you ever made?"

BETTMAN: "I don't think you can pinpoint it on one, so I'll give you a couple.

"In '94, we made the deal during collective bargaining that wasn't the right deal, just to save the season. Allowing the 'in the crease' rule, the foot-in-the-crease rule, we should have not done.

"And, uh, we once had a prospective owner defraud us, under crazy circumstances. So I'll give you a hat trick."

Will be at the NJ an NYR games Thursday and Saturday respectively. Both going to be tough enough, now tack on a very hot Buf team and it's a very tough road trip in must win situations!

Unbelievable that Landeskog keeps coming up sooooo huge right now as a rookie who is recently just 19. He HAS to win rook of the year at this point. Sure Henrique has been great, but he isn't nearly as complete and is half a decade older, while Nugent already got injured twice and is one dimensional. This kid is really something, as he lead the team in so many categories, and he's at the top of the charts in the NHL for shot, hits and now literally winning games with his individual effort to save Colorado's season!

He HAS to get the C next year...at 19. I'm not kidding either. This kid does it all. He steps up to anyone that tries to put him off his game too. Big RR on the Sabres took a late hit run at him, punched him in the face and most rooks would look for protection. He turned right into him and drove him into the boards and it got ugly. Not sure how it ended up being the Avs on the PK there, but I love his controlled fire and amazing leadership.

I cannot believe that the Nordiques tied that game with 1 second left in regulation.

Just got back from the av/dev game and what a gt showdown! JSG and Marty went toe to toe allowing nadda after reg and ot! Old Marty looked more like the Marty of old, and JSG stole Colorado a point as the Avs had little energy after the back to back road games vs very hot buf/dev teams...both went ot and so too! Great game and had sick seats!

It was a great game. Giguere was top notch as was Brodeur. I'll always enjoy a 1-0 goalie dual more than a high scoring affair.

I will. It's how I feed my ego; through sports talk on a radio show's message board.

Yes, I'm actually quite shocked. Has any NHL fanbase outside of Pittsburgh ever been pro-Crosby?

I think it's more a product of overt and in your face media tebow/linn effect. Eventually people just get tired of it. Tack on his bitching and whining early in his career and that's why there is some great hate out there for him, especially the nut punch/lack of code episode. However, to not respect his abilities is just plain stupid. What he does, has done and will do speaks way louder than any fan or canadians living through him.

My issue with it all right now is the focus on Sid and how it's a national fight bt Canada and Russia, and the Crosby pitt fans join in even though it's stupid...especially since Malkin may very well be the MVP of the fucking league this year. Tack on the fact that Bylsma and Pitt were fine without Crosby, but not so much without Letang and his breakout passes/speed/offense from the back end and it becomes even more frustrating for me. Again, it's sports media focusing on what's EASY versus what is. I'd love to hear about some of what I wrote above, but most outlets don't look past the making of headlines.

It's just the new thing in Canada to rip Ovechkin it seems. It's surely a little pro-crosby from the home crowd, but more anti-Russian/Ovechkin ripping as only Canada can make it bt the two. Funny it comes now while both are off, but at least Ovechkin isn't fragile of late.

I think it's partly because the league marketed Ovi and Crosby like they were the NHL's version of Magic and Bird. And given the rivalry between the Caps and Pens fans in this part of the country, the "Ovi vs. Sid" argument DOES get amped up bit. Of course, Caps fans are jealous (rightly) of Sid's success compared to Ovi's over the same time frame. All season long there have been "What's wrong with Ovi?"-type articles in the paper and discussions on talk radio. And given this city's craving for a title in ANY sport, it always seemed that the Caps, who had looked to be the one that was closest to getting it, helps to continue the debate. Basically: the Pens win with or without Sid while the Caps can't do anything with Ovi.

But even my friends who are die-hard Pens fans will agree with you that (1) it's been a miracle (for them anyway) that they've been winning without Sid and (2) that Malkin is having an MVP year.

But Mudo might tell me I'm wrong.

He's one of my favorite players. I was bummed when he left the Devils.

And I don't like Crosby now. The past few seasons I guess. I didn't mind that Pit won the cup because I like Lemieux and I enjoyed how the team had money problems and won the cup. But now? Eh. Crosby is an amazing player. And watching the game today against the Devils made me really hope that we don't play them in the first round of the playoffs. The Devils played really well for some of the game but couldn't sutain it, while the Pens never seemed to stop.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Though, I think the rivalry between Crosby and Ovechkin here, and moreover for me, has never been about nationality. They were the game's two best young players and as mentioned, marketed as Magic and Bird. One of which happens to be in the market in which I live and support. Now though, I don't see it as much of an individual rivalry. Maybe it's because Ovechkin and the Caps have never really been able to achieve any real level of success but to me their rivalry is all but over.

I guess it's just that I've never once seen Crosby invoke anything but harsh negativity outside of Pittsburgh. Believe me, while it is inexplicable at times, it doesn't bother me in the least. It required his lack of presence, but it really was surprising to see and hear it. And your point about it being in Canada and really just an anti-Ovechkin/Russian thing is well taken. Basically, I expected the fans in Winnipeg to choose a Canadian player on the Jets to claim better than Ovi, rather than Sid.

on a related note...Ovechkin is only the 9th player in NHL HISTORY to net 30 goals in his first 7 seasons!

this is his off year too...perhaps people write him off for foolish reasons and the issues of his team/ownership and coaching

the guy plays in every area of the ice, is tough as shit and simply doesn't get nicked up like plenty of other stars. he's a force and I'd LOVE to get him.

Yes I'm being a homer, not speaking upon other teams, etc. But, if this current Penguin team is able to remain healthy, is there another franchise able to keep pace? I know my view is insular, and that I don't take in a ton of other teams' games (been working on that/truly invested), but watching this team play really is something different.

you're wrong?

not sure where that comes from, but yah, pitt is clearly one of the favorites this year

only problem is, they have to get through a LOT of tough teams to get there, some with better GT overall as weeka stated.

it's not like Fleury is bad, but he's not as good as that team even makes him look. yet Fuhr is considered a great and to be honest, he wasn't. he is much like Fleury to me in that his team is just STACKED in front and he just has to stop one more shot than the other guy in net that is usually assaulted! Add in the fact that Pitt has one of the best coaches in the NHL and you have a very wicked storm brewing in the East. Yet Philly and Boston will surely decapitate another player to beat them. I'm sure they'd have little trouble taking Sid out and just hitting Malkin on every damn shift ... new orleans style too.

Almost forgot, FUCK YOU WILBON & KORNHEISER!

They had a segment on the survey by ESPN I think (odd I know) of 202 NHL players on if fighting is good in hockey/belongs. Guess what, 99.5%...FUCKING NINETY NINE point FIVE PERCENT or 201 of 202 players surveyed said absolutely and they attacked the NHL again!

They turned this on its head versus seeing it from the historic and player's eye/pov. They said it needs to be gone, it only is accepted bc they have this archaic code that makes no sense and yes, it's only there bc they grew up with it and watched it as kids.

Sorry assholes, they simply better understand THE SPORT THEY PLAY, and actually know something about hockey outside of suspensions and sidney fucking crosby updates (bhawk updates here and there too bc one is a complete city homer but doesn't know shit still).

So they go an idiotic step further too, linking FIGHTING to concussions and the issue of late! YAH, all those fighting concussions we've been enduring all year bc you know fighting most be up a ton right now with all these concussions right?! WTF MAN! Concussions with fighting are REALLY rare, and if they weren't, they'd be around A LOT more in the past as fighting is not even close to as common as in even the near past.

This, THIS is why I could care less if hockey got popular. I'd rather it stay off the radar overall to the public and remain our game versus some idiotic take on a game I love dominated by minivan moms and castrated men in suits responding to letterhead and outcries by fringe fans for more goals and less fighting.

Oh and RIGHT after this they tackled that poor kid getting killed in Florida and somehow it turned into how both think athletes need to speak up and lead on racial and political issues, especially black athletes tied to their issues. Not sure how tied the awful event into athletes here, but they did. I may have missed a picture or something the Heat did in the kid's honor, but not really speaking out bc there really isn't a need. Wrong is fucking wrong right? Yet they did this right after they told us that hockey players need to smarten up and that the NHL and the suits above them need to step up and protect the players from themselves or the concussions are only going to get worse.

So let me get this straight, athlete's NEED to step up and educate/lead us on issues they usually have no real/true understanding, just ego induced loud opinions versus athletes speaking out about the VERY SPORT THEY FUCKING PLAY?!

not a bad shot, bc honestly, Columbus is winning a lot of games of late and certainly NOT tanking right now

they looked AMAZING against the yotes the other day and only lost bc Mike f'n Smith stopped 52 shots in regulation vs 22 the other way being enough to get two by Mason and beat the BJs

earlier tonight, the Columbus took it to the Avs in a must win and beat us handidly

tanking can be good too, it's how the Avs ended up with their IMMEDIATELY best player, Landeskog. The kid just turned 19 and he leads the team in hits, goals, plus/minus, game winning goals, games played and pretty much any intangible and leadership quality or a close second only to Ryan O'Reilly. He's going to be something sick/special and surely the future captain of this new Avalanche team on the horizon. We just need Sacco to get canned and pick up one good Dman and vet presence winger in the offseason.

Yea. Also, it's not like the Isles don't have talent. JT has 81 points, Moulson 30+ goals again with 36 this year, PA Parenteau has been great, as have guys like Okposo, Hamonic and MacDonald. Nabokov has been good as well. We have lots of good prospects and other good players. They aren't THAT far away from contending for 7th or 8th seed each year. We need to draft a D prospect though. We have tons of fowards in the pipeline already.

Most D take a while to develop before ready for the NHL so you better hope you have that in the pipeline or I'm sure they'll be after guys like Suter, Weber and possibly trading some of that O depth for D...and a GT of the future too bc let's be honest, they don't seem to have that right now.

The Panthers clinched when Buffalo lost. The East is all set, except for the seeding. Depending on what happens Saturday, the Caps (for example) win, they could finish either third (as division champs if Florida loses in regulation), 7th (if they win, Ottawa loses in regulation and Florida gets at least one point) or 8th (if everyone wins).

Kevin Poulin is reallllly good. DiPietro is just in his way really. I hope with the new CBA, they can buy him out like they have in the NBA's CBA. If they buy him out now, they have to pay him until 2030 I think. The Isles do have D prospects in Donovan, DeHaan. Are they ready yet? Idk. Maybe next year. It depends.

while I do agree, I could see Hunter being a tough opponent for this type team coming off a Cup win and all. you never know, but he will SURELY make the Caps a tougher team to play against in the playoffs, but I'm not liking the goalie matchup for the Caps in the end and it will probably sink them

On another note Mudo, give me your feel on Semin overall if you don't mind. I've been paying more attention to him and noticing some things about his game. I'm mainly interested in him bc there are rumors he's off to Colorado for even a decent offer to play with his good buddy Varly again.

My fear is he's NOT the type player that Sacco gets along with in any way (O first players/shooters who don't play well in their own end). However, this year I noticed my impressions are off on Semin a LOT (it seems and hence my Q). After a few full games I've been somewhat impressed by his two-way game, or should I say not as appalled by it. He surely isn't some physical player, which still might hurt his coming to the Avs if we unfortunately keep Sacco, but he plays his wing well positionally, takes the shooting lanes up quite well and is much bigger than I thought. Again, he's not some banger and I wouldn't even want that, but he's still quite a sniper and plays D in my mind enough, so much to the tune he's one of the top +/- on a playoff edge team with the Caps and much better than some other big names there. Yet I do not watch enough to feel out his normal matchups, Corsi stats, PP/PK use (I did notice a lot on the PP vs little on the PK).

Thanks.

There's just too much talent on Boston. The Caps have what....one and a half NHL Centers? After Backstrom and half of Marcus Johansson....meh. You're getting into Mathieu Perreault/Jay Beagle/Jeff Halpern/Brooks Laich territory. Just not going to get it done. I think Boston is going to try to beat up the Caps D much like Pittsburgh did in 09 with Mike Green, but the Caps never had a guy like a Roman Hamrlik to take pressure off Green (they were always pairing him with Jeff Schultz, who while decent, is a gastropod, and forecheckers just ended up pounding on 52...see here (http://www.japersrink.com/2012/3/15/2872742/to-get-the-most-out-of-mike-green-play-roman-hamrlik), and also see here (http://www.japersrink.com/2011/9/27/2448988/protecting-mike-green)

But that the Caps have not attempted to protect Green in the way Detroit protected Rafalski and Lidstrom last year can be attributed, in part, to the fact that they haven't really had the personnel to protect him. One of the keys to Detroit's protection scheme is that Stuart, Ericsson, and Kronwall all can skate well and are all capable passers. They need to be able to skate in order to track pucks down all over the zone, and they need to be able to pass so that they can move the puck out of danger when they do get to the loose puck.

The Caps simply haven't had enough blueliners that could skate and move the puck in recent years. Dennis Wideman and Green didn't play together, and John Carlson was paired with Karl Alzner last season. There have been times when some might have thought that Tom Poti could have been the guy to play the left side with Green, but that pair never saw much time together, and Poti was out all last season. Instead, Mike Green has gotten a steady diet of Jeff Schultz and Shaone Morrisonn on his left side. Neither of these players can be described by the terms "mobile" or "puck-mover." And this has meant that, more often than not, Mike Green has had to chase down the loose pucks, and take the physical beating that comes with such a job.

So I think Hamrlik's going to be really key to the series.

Alex Semin's a toughie, because no one is more controversial in the fan base. There are those that love the guy, because he's super skilled, he's a really good PKer (even though Hunter's never put him out on the PK) and he is capable of putting up big numbers offensively. The problem is, there are times when he's lackadaisical (or perceived to be), stretches where it doesn't look like he's trying very hard, and he can be pretty fragile. He's also not very good with the media (hardly ever gives interviews, especially after the Sidney Crosby "Dead wood" thing), and sometimes makes really boneheaded plays. He's also got a really really intense reputation as a diver, to where he almost never gets any calls, and he's got a rep for taking insanely stupid, lazy stick penalties, although those have pretty much gone away under the new staff.

To me, he's kind of like an artist. He does his own thing in his own way, and not a lot of people dig that. He's just a different kind of dude, and I'm not sure that's something that's really "accepted" in the world of hockey. He's also never really played with a world-class center during his tenure (unless they put him up with Backstrom and Ovi on the top line, which they almost hardly ever do any more), so who knows what he would do with that. He's pretty much the ultimate high risk, high reward guy. And I don't even know if he'll play in the NHL next year. He might just go back to the K.

Here's his 09-10 Wrap up (http://www.japersrink.com/2010/6/4/1496906/2009-10-rink-wrap-alexander-semin), and his 10-11 Wrap up (http://www.japersrink.com/2011/6/9/2214846/2010-11-rink-wrap-alexander-semin)

Oilers win the lottery again. I wonder if they even entertain the idea of trading the pick. They can take Yakupov and spend another season completely ignoring their blue line or try to acquire more assets moving down.

I thought the same thing, but could you pass up Yakupov? I wouldn't, as he's a CLEAR #1 this year, unlike RNH last year and many of the last few drafts. If anything, get them (Ooil offensive players) all together and trade the one that doesn't seem to fit the chemistry and team moving forward to a d strong, o light team.

The only way I move this pick is if a team makes a HUGE offer/overpays big. It may very well happen too, perhaps Washington with all it's Colorado picks and their own? Other teams of interest here are Columbus, Buffalo and Tampa. In fact, I could see Columbus doing this just to get Yakupuv, and the Oil STILL get Ryan Murray, the defensive stud of this draft. The guy can skate and his playmaking ability from the blue line is sweet. His first pass/breakout look is precise and he's very good in his own end as well. This fits the idea the Nash is gone soon in Columbus too, as Yakupuv can take the mantle there and Nash would surely net even MORE picks to help make the move up to #1.

Yeah, I agree and I think Edmonton probably ends up keeping the pick and taking Nail. It would certainly make the decision a lot easier if they could convince Schultz to sign with them, but I don't see that happening.

Columbus was already talking about moving the first overall pick before the lottery, so I'm not sure if they would try to make a move, but if they could get rid of Nash in the process of moving up they might be more inclined. I think Yzerman has everything set on using one of his first round picks in a package to get Schneider or Bernier or another young goalie. I could see Washington making a push to move up.

He's the creepiest guy in sports broadcasting. His hands on post game interviews are unbearably uncomfortable to watch.

i think the announcers in the preds game have said every time gaustad has won a faceoff, "well, that's why they got him!"

They went to the locker room and popped some bubbly. Because they're arrogant. And remind me a lot of this team:
