If Nashville matches they can't trade him for a calendar year, but I agree with you that they probably match. It sucks for Poile that Holmgren took negotiations out of his hands, but from what I understand the Predators don't have to honor any secondary language in the offer sheet like no trade or no movement clauses. They just have to agree to the money structure.
I think since he was restricted that he was only going to sign a 1 year deal anyway. And I don't see how owners can ask for a salary reduction and 5 year max contracts and 4 days later this happens.

I know offer sheets are part of the CBA, but they're a dick move either way.
This.

There is no way Nashville's GM is going to let his 2 best players leave in the same off season with nothing in return. I say they match the offer and either trade him right away or next off season. Plus hasn't anyone learned not to sign long term deals with Philly.
well if this weber offer sheet thing stands, Philly gives Nashville a shitload of first round picks so that's a lot more than nothing in return
they had zero control in the Suter thing...he was leaving no matter what they offered

not all owners agree on this, and the Philly gm/ownership are clearly one of those who do not

Eh, again I know it's part of the CBA but the way it's structured almost entirely in signing bonuses through the first six years is stupid. Holmgren knows he is putting Poile and Nashville's ownership between a rock and a hard place by putting $27 million of the contract up in the first calendar year for a franchise that isn't in the greatest shape financially. Also, as someone who wants to see the NHL games this season this contract structure is going to be a huge point of contention amongst all parties at labor negotiations.

I forgot about that one, having the first year worth 15 million to try to screw the Avs. And it was the start of the rise in contracts which led to the meaningless lockout.

Maybe. I'll check it out. I just want to keep up on some of the the up and comers for the team. And both have tremendous upside (Henrique could be the captain of the team some day) and Larsson is going to be a great defenseman. And hey, it'll be neat to check out the future goalies for the team. Most likely the future goalies.

let's be honest, Henrique should be the captain as soon as the nhl comes back, not kovi
yet we know this won't be the case
did they ever hand off the c yet?

Kovy was great in the playoffs and even better during the regular season. I feel he get's a lot of flack and I'm not sure why. He sucked during the cup finals but the whole team was pretty awful. I do really like Hneirique though and the way he plays. He's a tremendous talent and the kind of talent that bleeds leader. I also LOVE how he handled that game winning goal against LA in game five. He made an unreal shot and he acted like he had done it before. Fucking loved it. So much calm in one of the biggest goals of his career (his goal against Florida and moreso his goal against the Rangers will probably go down as his biggest moment*).
*That's kind of an odd statement considering he has such a long career left and raw, just incredible talent and hockey sense.
As for the Larsson thing, I'm drawing a blank about what happened.
keithy_19
10-27-2012, 10:46 PM
And no, they didn't hand off the C yet. My top three choices would be Salvador (guy is a work horse and plays with his all and has a lot of respect in the clubhouse), Henrique (for all the reasons in my post above), and then Kovy.
spoon
10-27-2012, 11:08 PM
kovy is the reason Parise is gone. that contract and his style simply aren't the norm for the devs but here we are
larsson was convinced by Lou that no dev gets bonus clauses in their contracts, yet the devs never draft so high as to them being necessary in the past. it was a half truth and complete bullshit bc they didn't have money to sign him as a normal kid drafted that high gets 99.9% of the time. the kids CAN NOT be paid at a normal rate or like a vet player, there are rules to keep this spending at bay (like the new nfl take on drafted players and their slot). however, a bonus setup to make sure the top and nhl ready players get closer to their value was/is set up. it works mainly on games played, and with kids that young you KNOW they must earn the time and the HUGE majority get returned to their junior team without even a shot at the NHL bc they aren't ready or are too small. the rule is there for guys like Larsson and Landeskog more ready, if not really close in development and then could make a good living as an NHL player, not paid at 5th round player type level.
Larsson is just that, while he should have made much more and Lou played semantics with him. It was dishonorable by Lou and the opposite, yet naive to say the least, by Larsson and his agent.

I've watched some of it. I've heard for years that international ice makes for a more exciting game, and for the life of me I'll never understand why. If anything a lot of things that look really impressive on tighter North American ice just look sort of unnecessary on bigger ice. The whole game slows down considerably. Oh, KHL goalies by and large suck monkey balls also.

Bigger draw, bigger spenders, and better tippers. For an average Flyers game we have about 200-250 reservations not counting walk-ins. Sixers youre looking at 80-100 reservations when they are playing a good team, 25-50 when they play a shitty team.

I actually agree with you. They gave up 7% of their revenue, that alone shouldve made the owners jump on the deal. Their greed sickens me.
However everything Ive been reading has been saying that it would be retarded to scrap the season over the few remaining issues they have left. They are basically arguing over years now. From what Ive read it seems both sides are feeling they are gonna play a 48 game season and are just posturing before the deadline to get a deal done to see if the other side will give anything else up. They are hoping the union de-certification helps get a deal done quickly like it did with the NBA.
Im just hoping we dont lose the season because of the huge fucking egos of Bettman and Fehr.

Played a solid game and lost to the home team in a 2-1 battle. Marakov was virtually unbeatable in net (Shots favored US 44-28 I believe), but the US squad outplayed the Russians overall. Meanwhile the Slovaks pissed away a game vs the Canadians, up 2-0 and then Strome (Islander property and looking good), helped lead the charge to keep Canada on top of that sick division B.

Well, they say anything less than 48 games is a cancelled season. So, puck would have to drop 3rd week of January, with a week a training camp prior. Probably be tons of injuries, at least for the guys who aren't currently playing overseas. Skating and shooting at a local rink is good and all, but it's not game conditions. Either way, I just want hockey. As bad as my Isles are, it's a joy getting to watch John Tavares grow with each game. He needs to have the C next year.

He may not get that C, but he sure does seem to have some good quality coming up in that system to help lead in the near future in Brooklyn. I love the sound of Tavares/Strome as a 1-2 punch up the middle at center, your blueline prospect pool is unreal, with Reinhardt, Donovan and de Haan, and the wing Niederreiter will be solid once put on a real line...which will happen this year (or next) since PA left.
NYI's hole is and always seems to be at goalie. Nilsson is a work in progress, huge and quick for his size, but not seemingly ready. I haven't seen enough to give a full nod or burn, but to me, the Isle is very light at the position as per the norm.

Gibson was unreal that game.
I want to be optimistic about the semis against Canada tomorrow, but man, it's just tough when Canada has like 5 guys who would be playing in the NHL right now if not for the lockout (RNH, Strome, Jenner, Huberdeau, Schiefle, maybe Hamilton and probably another two or three that I can't think of at the moment). And that's not even counting a guy like Jonathan Drouin, who looks like the real deal (much moreso than MacKinnon).
Semis are going to be really good tomorrow. Canada/USA and Sweden/Russia in a finals rematch. Haven't gotten a chance to see the Swedes yet, and I'm really excited to see Filip Forsberg.

And I can't wait to watch those sems at 4am too! I have hope as I don't think Subban is as solid as Gibson, and that alone can win this is Gibson continues to shut shit down! Calvin runs around too much in the net and could be beat with some patience and screens. Gibson is much better positionally and outplayed Subban in my mind the 2-1 loss. The US needs to tone up the grit and stop the fancy puck handling too.

yes and you must be talking about Rocco Grimaldi if you mean the kid the FINALLY showed up in the last game. he was supposed to add a whole lot more in this tournament and to say he underperformed is putting it lightly. Housley had to bench the guy to get him to hustle and not fuck around with puck like a fool, and only in the final did he really show up. In reality, I like Trocheck better of the two Florida prospects in the game...as Grimaldi and Gardeau may have shown up late (way later in Grimaldi's case), but their size too would worry me in the NHL game.
my fav in this tournament was Trouba...as a defenseman he ranked top five in points, was huge in his own end and plays with size and an smart edge. If i were an NHL team, I'd try hard to pry him from the Jets bc this kid is something. Loved McCabe's game too on the back end.

My point was not so much his stats, more of he is in game shape. So, there won't be that "how many games before he hits his stride" talk. With a guy like Matt Moulson, his line mate who did not play overseas, you will hear that though. The guys who went overseas did the right thing, in that they will be ready to go conditioning wise. But for the others, skating at a rink and taking shots in a glorified practice is not the same. It helps, sure. But I bet we see a ton of injuries early.

Grimaldi is Hockey Tebow. Right down to the religious zealotry. Florida's loaded up with great prospects regardless, from Jonathan Huberdeau to Quinton Howdon to Nick Bjugstad. And Jacob Markstrom.
Trouba was money this tournament (going to HATE seeing him on the Jets), as was John Gibson and Johnny Gaudreau. I wasn't too enamored with Seth Jones, because he had a couple really bad games, but dude has a ton of talent.

The NHL is already acting on this saying they fully expect the KHL to honor the agreement they worked so hard to get with them a few years back to avoid any more Radulov situations. If they don't, it will get VERY ugly in the courts and the KHL will lose. I fully expect him back to complete his contract this year. If not, my guess is the KHL won't be allowed to let him play without a HUGE risk financially.

Although I think Henrique is surely at least A material and a future C. Yet I think it'll be Kovy as Captain for a few, Elias will keep the A as he is very Hejduk like and is a great help to a captain, but not captain material. Henrique played with a hell of a lot of poise last year. He should get an A for the goal against Quick in game 5 last season. I agree with you on Elias keeping the A, and while I don't mind Kovy getting the C I sort of think Salvador would be a great captain as well. He's the leader of the defense.

Nah, I think theres a few reasons...
1. It was already scheduled to be a 1pm game that day.
2. Obviously they want to put on a good rivalry game, especially if it has Sidney Crosby in it.
3. Someone mentioned it earlier, as great as it would be, they dont want the first game of the season to be on national TV with tons of empty seats, and the Flyers just arent going to have that. I dont even think they took a hit in ticket sales this season.

I know that you'll agree that Kovalchuk is one of the best players in the game, just like I agree that Parise is also one of the best. I really enjoyed how Parise played with a certain passion that allowed him to go into the boards and he was never afraid of getting in front of the net. But I saw Kovalchuk change his game last year into a kind of player that would do all the dirty work as well. I'm not sure it's a monumental difference based on talent alone. Obviously having two premier players on your team is better than just having one, but do you really think Parise is much better than Kovalchuk?

Kovy is a shooter with size that rarely uses it but for offense and his shot is unreal, yet his d is suspect to say the least. Last year was a nice change for him in the playoffs, hence the reason he finally had some success there. The loss of parise is huge, but Salvador getting the c helps set the tone for NJ. Still, the o will be led by Kovy and he'll put up fine numbers I'm sure. Just like the old days in Atlanta, yet similar totals in the win column too. Henrique will be key here, as someone needs to pick up the grit, leadership slack.

Nonsense. No one in their right mind would take me to prom. Wait...
I agree with you with Kovy. He has one of the best shots, if not the best, in the game. His defense has been a problem but he bought into the Devils philosophy last year and was still able to be a leader in points in the league. Another year into the system will make him even better. The forechecking that Deboar has them buying into has really done wonders. Having guys like Lemaire still affiliated with the team and sure, we lost Larry Robinson which sucks (I wish him the best though and no hard feelings) but we have another hall of famer in Scott Stevens who will fill the void. I don't expect the cup this year, but I think the team will do fine.
We've got a lot of young players ready to break through. Hnerique's last year was only a glimpse. My God the poise that kid has. Josefsonn will be better. Larsson will be one of the best defenseman in the league by the time he's done (I see a hybrid of Lidstrom and Niedermayer, though that might be wishful thinking. I still say he was the best pick available long term in that draft.).
My main concern is goal tending, but I am confident for the two years that Brodeur has left. The franchise owes it to the guy and he will put up good stats. He won't win a Vezina but he won't be why the Devils lose.

Well he may or may not have bought in, but the fact remains he'll garner a WHOLE lot more top D/shutdown line coverage this year without Parise to spread that out. It's a matter of being the main guy much more on an island this season versus last year with the spread. Z and Henrique will have more pressure this year to step up offensively and health obviously comes in with Zajac. Yah I know it's not concussion, groin or knee related which is good, but he missed a whole lot of time for a young guy last season...some might add a lost season in terms of development. I like him too, but not sure how much you can put on him.

Larsson will be one of the best defenseman in the league by the time he's done (I see a hybrid of Lidstrom and Niedermayer, though that might be wishful thinking. I still say he was the best pick available long term in that draft.).
Surprisingly this is true on the young players. I'm kind of shocked how many above average players the Devs are pumping out with lesser draft picks outside of two years back (Larsson year). Still, they have plenty to show in bigger roles on the team, and guys like Parise and Salvador help kids fit in and play smart with less pressure. They do a LOT off the ice and in the locker room too with these guys, and losing Parise hurts here too.
As for Larsson, I like him a lot too and D take time...even the best of the best. Yet putting him as a combo of two of the GREATEST ever after one season in which he clearly had struggles with the speed, size and physicality of the North American game is a big leap. I love the premise of what he can be, but even in a lesser role last year he had issues. Soon enough he'll be a top pairing guy with some decent O upside, but not top level points. His stretch/outlet pass impressed me the most last season, but he played small for his size. This is just part of playing in the best league in the world in a very tough position with little margin of error as a kid. NJ was in a playoff race and had little time to risk him in tough spots as a kid amongst men. You can do that on the wing much easier, but with time the guy will keep getting better and better. Calling him THE BEST in a crazy deep draft is aggressive to say the least. To me, RNH will be the best scorer, Larsson will be the best overall D man and Landeskog will be the best power forward/leader. All different and needed positions for every team. Yet I wonder if RNH will stay healthy if he doesn't put on some size/weight. He's one year in and already lost a quarter of a season. To me, Colorado and NJ got what they needed most. Edmonton just added another kid with scoring potential with yet another high draft pick. A few will surely light it up, but they are severely in need of some D and a goalie if Dubnyk doesn't pan out (not holding my breath).
My main concern is goal tending, but I am confident for the two years that Brodeur has left. The franchise owes it to the guy and he will put up good stats. He won't win a Vezina but he won't be why the Devils lose.
He's still solid, but they sure as shit better use their backup more. There are soooo many back to backs, yet one could argue the east teams have very little travel so who knows. It may actually help Marty with his age in mind, but they HAVE to utilize their backup more and keep him healthy for any shot in the playoffs. I almost always comes down to goaltending in the playoffs. Outside of the Philly/Pitt series that was just fucking putrid (notice they both got knocked out bc of it), most series were d/GT centric.

I may have overstated my opinion of Larsson, but I think that despite going through a bit of a learning curve, he'll be a really special player. I also think that it's rare to get a really talented defenseman.

especially that late in the draft, as 4th for the top D in the draft is late to me and the devs won the lottery just to be there too...but Lou still screwed the kid in a big way
later on in the kid's career I bet he has little loyalty once he realizes he fell for a bullshit take on a team that never drafted so early in the past. kid got screwed

philly can definitely handle it, and they have a team ready now so if they want a true chance they HAVE TO HAVE a better goalie
if Vanc can't move Luongo, which honestly I think they will, I would have to think they need to buy him out too
they simply won't be able to survive/keep key position players with him on the bench collecting that salary with the cap falling next season.

with the redden and gomez buyout rule change, does this allow for other teams to do the same THIS year for one player too!? I would assume most teams would want this option and it would only be fair to them and the players stuck in an NHL that changed AFTER their contract was signed with the new agreement and finance/cap structuring?
serious question too, as I'm not sure
bc if it is the case, don't be surprised if some players aren't cut after a few days into the season...and Luongo and Bryz have to be two leading candidates too. Yet the Gomez/Redden rule tweak might have somehow been a one off situation.

Avs got a wake up call yesterday too, as not every team will be weak like Columbus...SJ looks big and tough. They won't get far in the end bc some highly skilled team always takes them out, but it's very hard to out muscle/work them with their grit and talented big forwards.
All in all though, Marleau got two but did nothing special in the game. He was just on a HIGHLY efficient pp and pucks bounced to him twice. My grandmother could have buried both so I fully expect his pace to die off in a huge way and not even win the scoring or goal titles. He's a second tier guy at best, not top.

From the MLB thread and I thought it would be interesting here too...especially for our Islander fans! Sorry boys!
I am just not convinced they like every MLB team, and Commish since lets say early to mid 90s were not well aware he was doing it.
Especially coming off a bad hip.
They would have tried anything if there was a chance for him to even come close to being what he is, the worst contract in the history of Sports.
nah, he's actually hit and done something in the rich MLB on well off financial teams...
I raise you...Alexi Yashin...Bought out in 07, yet still costing them 2 million a year in cap space. (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/hockey/nhl/news/2001/09/05/yashin_islanders_ap/)
Making matters worse looking back, the Islanders not only paid in money for Yashin, but AWESOME players in the end. Yashin, 33, was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in June 2001 for defenseman Zdeno Chara, forward Bill Muckalt and the Islanders' 2001 first-round pick (Jason Spezza was taken)
Great quote from Milbury who sucked since day one there. Oh it got worse!
"When I got here, it was a mess, and it got messier since I've been here. Until Charles and [co-owner] Sanjay [Kumar], there was no investment in terms of personnel or in terms of the building. I don't' blame anyone for not showing up - the last few years, it was hard for me to show up. But now, this team has a good chance to win, and it's been a good summer."
Fucking awful in every way possible.
=======================
Not to be outdone by Milbury & Wang on the Island, Snow & Wang had this gem up for debate as worst contract ever as well. And remember, this the hockey/the Islanders, right before a cap and of course the length with both are hilarious for many reasons. Not to mention Yashin's contract was in 2001, bought out in 2007, AFTER the DiPietro deal. So at one point, they had two of the worst contracts in the history of sports on the same payroll/team! I can't imagine why the Islanders have been so horrid for a long long time.
Rick DiPietro, Islander for 15 years up until 2021! (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2584306)
A great finish to all this is Yashin has actually been talking to the Islanders about possibly coming BACK to play there! He's only going to be 40 and is still technically on the payroll, but I see no reason the fans wouldn't just LOVE this idea! Wang, wtf are you thinking...if you ever did.
