ok, I was asking bc I missed the last period and the OT

was out back chainsawing trees! so much fun!

I did just see it and it was certainly weak for late in a game or in OT to me. Sid surely could have skated through that 90% of the time and seemed to want that pen call drawn and got it. I'm sure the Islanders don't get the same calls the other way and hence my issue with it. It just has to be consistent for both teams, which with top level guys it never is. Tough way to lose, but man are both goalies awful. Not sure how long the Pens stick with Fleury in the end, bc Vokoun can't be worse right now...can he? We all know the Isle haven't had a good to great goalie in YEARS! They better get one soon or they'll be the next Philly, or worse, Edmonton. Not sure who is on the market next season, but I'd be scouting for months if I were them.

spoon

only a few teams can go full guns blazing vs the Pens and win like Philly did last year

it'll be a shutdown d/good to great GT that sends them home...yet there isn't to much of that in the east. They'll get their first true test vs the likes of the Sens, Rangers, Caps in my mind. I just hope they lose sooner than later bc I'm already sick of hearing about Sid.

I think that a goaltender in hockey is more essential to the success of his team than any other position in any other sport. A football team can succeed with a mediocre quarterback, and even if a baseball team gets a really incredible pitcher, they can only toss every 5th game. But your hockey team isn't doing shit if your goalie is bad.

LA will be a VERY TOUGH matchup...and the Ducks aren't exactly easy either, but still a touch better matchup to me. SJ is the wild card in my mind. They finally shook up the lineup this year from their norm of make the playoffs as a top team and just quietly bow out players. And Logan has REALLY become a great player this year, and the SJ speed is a ton better this year.

Torts needs to go. He's passionate which is good, but he doesn't get his skill players to work. Look at Gaborik. Look at Richards. Sure, Callahan blocks shots and Lundqvist plays lights out, but that's it. I think a new coach with a new style of play would help the team. They have talent to win the cup, especially in a few years when their younger players get even better.

I just can't stand Torts. He goes on today to say how the only reason he benched Richards was because he didn't fit on the 4th line and wasn't getting enough minutes and it wasn't fair to him (Richards). So basically, what he's saying is he can't figure out as a coach how to use a gifted player in the right situation. And because it was unfair to only play him 8 minutes it's better to play him 0 minutes. Wonderful.

Nate Mackinnon was fucking AWESOME and bested his 4 pt game against Portland in an earlier round game, only to get 5 pts (hat trick) in the championship game. The kid does everything and plays sooo hard on and away from the puck. On top of this, Drouin added FIVE assists and some on absolutely awesome feeds to Nate. The top three this year are looking pretty damn sweet, but the D usually take a lot longer to develop for the NHL ice.

Hawks looked tentative last night. Too many times looking for the extra pass, and wasting opportunities.

Their play during the 5 on 3 (and 5 on 4 that followed) about made me shut the game off completely. And that was just one of many they pissed away.

I give the Boston D a lot of credit, but that was atrocious.

That said, they withstood a helluva 5 hour onslaught last night, and still found a way to survive.

I have a lot of complaints with the NHL, but scheduling 2 days off between games 1 and 2 was a great decision.

It happens to be in the best interest of the hawks right now, so I'm going to consider it brilliant. If the bruins were coming off a tough 7 game conf final, and were granted 2 days rest after a tough first final game win... I'd be screaming BULLSHIT!

My chick thinks it (3 OTs) was staged by the NHL because during the pre-game, she said they had wondered aloud if this game would end that night, or into the next morning. She didn't make it past the second period.

It's annoying as hell trying to watch a hockey game without being able to sling verbal abuses at the screen. That night was unbearable. I had to bite my lip and move to another room where I could let something out.

Emery time?

Man was Crawford awful and he was my biggest fear going into this series. Rask may have given up 6, but most were awesome goals and he clearly kept Boston in even this game. Almost 50 f'n shots and high paced, crazy pressure type shots too. If Chicago had Rask this series is already over.

Both goalies are better bc of the teams they play on for different reasons, but man I never had much faith in Crawford. He only has to win two more though, or the team in front of him may have to put up 6 again which I just don't see happening. Expect an AMAZING game from Rask in one if not both the next two games at least.

During the regular season, I thought both Emery and Crawford were about equal, with a slight edge maybe even to Emery. I went through a wide array of emotions last night.

You see, it was ME who jinxed the cubbies in 2003, not Bartman. I was the one who said, "I really wouldn't be all that upset if they lose game 5. I'd rather see them win the pennant back at Wrigley anyway..."

Similar brief thought last night. The end of the last game in Philly in 2010 was just so... I don't know, anti-climactic, I guess you would say? I mean I was thrilled the hawks won, but the place just went silent, and no one really knew if the puck went in or not at first, and the win just sort of laid there flat.

When the hawks blew yet another PP chance late in the 3rd, I was trying to calm myself down by thinking of game 7 in the madhouse. But then memories of '03 came back, and I said fuck that!

When they tied, I thought they'd take it in OT like they did in game 4. I never dreamed it wouldn't make it that far.

After '03, I'll take anything I can get, but there's a part of me that really wouldn't have been too upset if we had gotten a game 7, and a chance to win it in Chicago. I'm kinda bummed that it's over, I guess.

Yes, but he's not that good, as I've actually seen him on the ice PLENTY out here and even was an assistant coach here and there for him as he grew up playing in NE NJ. Yet I haven't been on top of his development for a few years so I can't fully grade the kid tbh. Judging by where they picked him, I assume he's still not even close to an NHL player, will need to make plenty of advancements to his game and Marty won't be away from the NJ org for that long after retirement finally comes. I expect him to be with the org even faster then Roy with Colorado.

My team went first to last. Now they are being sold. Who knows if they move.

So not so much right now.

the coaching staff/culture change alone should help, but it could be take some time to get it going

yet an idiot could improve on their 5 forward PP unit and overall defensive system

i expect many to be surprised with a few new names on D more than up front

Siemens, Bigras, Elliott and Barrie will all have a shot to impress in camp and supplant some shit we've kicked to the curb, much less some left (Zanon, Hunwick, SOB and more)...and don't sleep on Benoit. He may very well be the PP specialist we've been looking for.

Or it can all be awful again, but it's about time they made a move and Roy at least won't be just ambivalent as the team plays uninspired and awful hockey.

We just got Tim Thomas who 'feels reborn'. The guy is a tea party loon. Please take him away.

well, at least on D and in net

yet this year it may be somewhat

love the ferrence angle to get some leadership/grit back there to teach the kids and schultz is a future stud on the pp and a true pmd

he'll be much better suited to the longer nhl season after last year under his belt

and yes he is a loon, but is a fighter and turned a middling or worse career into something pretty special very late

fucking BOO

and wow, this too

damn NHL is becoming a joke in its attempt to curb fighting

What a completely idiotic rule. (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/krys-barch-brett-gallant-rule-loophole-remove-other-011011548--nhl.html)

I get that this is a cover your ass type moment for the NHL tied to concussions linked to fighting/fighters of late, and a helmet-less fighter possibly hitting the ice, but I'm sorry, it's fucking weak. Most concussions come outside of fighting, and only the OLD SCHOOL fighters, very few left...if any, were/are at decent risk. Now we'll be seeing soooo many stupid pens for guys not wanting to break hands, fingers and more...especially with the visor mandate too.

Oh man did I miss Roy!

FUCKING AWESOME start!!

This team is going to be a mean, fast, scoring bunch...D sucks though.

Roy almost fought tubby too bc he had asshole lovejoy out there and he went knee to knee with MacKinnon when clearly beat and added an elbow as well. It was the youngest kid in the NHL's first game too. POS move late bc he was beat BAD! no call too, and it led to a goal that broke a shutout with 4 seconds.

Game 1 for Roy

Fucking intensity and I love it. Sacco was a dullard with no strategy or heart. Roy brings two things EVERYWHERE he goes, passion and fucking wins!

Thank God the Devils have solved their scoring woes.

I'm not too worried yet. It's the first game and they looked much better in the second and third period. And if Zidlicky hits the wide open net maybe things change. Oh well.

I'd say the writing is definitely on the wall.

Remember when Marty would barely ever take a night off? To not have him even start in the season opener speaks volumes.

Definitely getting old but probably wanted him in good condition for the home opener.

They said it was because he took some time off after his Dad died last week. But if they are going to split games this season IMO I think Marty will play mostly home games.

It's no doubt that Brodeur's career is winding down. The addition of Schneider at the draft is obviously a calculated move. Brodeur's remarks about how much he admires the talent of Schneider speaks volumes (we all know that Brodeur will be a factor with the Devils long after he stops wearing number 30).

That being said, the guy lost his father, someone he was incredibly close to, anHd didn't practice with the team for several days while he was tending to putting his father in the ground. It is perfectly reasonable for him to miss the opening night under those circumstances.

I still think this team needs to gel. They lost tonight against the Islanders but they battled back and got production from their off season additions. A win would have been nice, but it's still early. I'm not ready to start feeling doom and gloom after two games.
