Preseason is officially started and I can't WAIT to get the 08/09 season out of my head!
Avs look young, fast and very different (a good thing) early in their 3-1 win over Dallas. Yes, they only gave up one as Anderson already fills a HUGE hole the team had last year.
They also have a nice new center who may stay up in the pros this year, but it'll take a while for him to put up numbers just like Stamkos last year.

Welcome the the world that is douchebag city with Calgary. As much as I'd LOVE Phaneuf to be on the Avs, he is always an asshole out there and will never step up and fight after laying shitty hits like that. I totally agree that it's bush.

I like the additions of Knuble and Morrison, but I'm sure they'll find some way to lose to Pittsburgh again for the 11,000th time in the playoffs. Why even bother at this point?
Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Varlamov starts the year in Hershey...I think Neuvirth's better than he is at this point.

You're wrong and I love Orpik. Phaneuf is a beast overall. He can dominate on the point on the PP, has a CANNON of a slapper, good hands, a strong skater and hits like an animal. Yes he's dirty, but an awesome player. I see this guy a LOT every year, and he changes games almost every single time the Avs play him. Even when he's off his game, he draws a TON of penalties. I just want him to fight for ONCE and not turn the other cheek after laying someone out.

I don't see him nearly as much as you do, but from what i've seen, he seems like the ulitimate "hit or miss guy". Its like he takes way too many chances and gets caught out of position a lot. I would much rather have a defenseman that plays great posionally and doesn't hit than one who goes out of his way to lay big hits.

The early report on Neuvirth was he can get beaten up top easily and he really can't do much to improve on that and he hasn't in my opinion because of his style, they say he's improved his rebound problems but, and Varly could use more AHL time but if Neuvirth ends up splitting duties, and with his inconsistencies,...the AHL is one thing but it's up to him to prove himself NOW, i think we'll know if Varly is up permanently after 10 games of Neuvirth

Eh...I don't see why they honestly can't use both. Since they've already named Theodore the starter, the real battle is to see who backs him up. I think it works itself out as the season goes along, and then once they find someone to take Theodore's expiring deal at the deadline, they'll run with those two (and there's good depth at the position in the organization, with Holtby now at Hershey).

I'll defend that signing forever. They signed him for two years at a pretty reasonable number (4.5) considering Huet stabbed them in the back (fortunately as it turned out, as he's now an albatross in Chicago with a massive deal). His deal expires this year, and he wasn't all that bad; 2.87 and .900 is MUCH MUCH better production than they got out of the Kolzig/Johnson tandem the year before.
They jerked him around in the playoffs too much...he really should have been put back in net for the back to back Yanni game in the Pittsburgh series. Varlamov completely ran out of gas as that series went along, and it all finally caught up to him in Game 7. Unfortunately, the coaching staff neglected to learn from the lessons of Carolina in 06, who rotated their young guy, Cam Ward and their mediocre guy, Martin Gerber, successfully and won the Cup.

If u think 5 million a year for a .900 Save % is reasonable, then we surely will never see eye to eye on this guy. Take into account he's a lockerroom cancer, terrible team guy and truly thinks he's a top goalie in this league simply baffles me.
Oh and not that I wanted him back, but he did the same fucking thing to the Avs and Hackett as Huet did the Caps, only worse. He had them convinced he was good to go and then turned and signed a deal with the Caps for about .5 more....which the Avs would have given him. I'm SOOOO glad they didn't and he's gonzo.
He LITERALLY helped Budaj become a bad goalie in the end, and I blame all those assholes in charge at the time, including those who traded for him and his HUGE contract, and those who allowed it to be the reason he got 50 fucking chances. Go take more roids and mask them you cheating french Canadian douche.

I'm liking the look of the Devils this season. We got a lot younger but still have good vets.

As preseason fades into the regular season, the Avs seemingly got young overnight. With Sakic retired, Smyth & Leopold moved and others like Lappy & Arnason gone via free agency, Colorado has finally made the move that has been needed for years. Will this mean they'll be better in the short term, very unlikely, but in the long term it's a huge step.
Here's the breakdown:
Colorado's Extremely Young Forwards
Duchene & O'Reilly made the team and are both just 18 and fresh from their 1st & 2nd round selections in this year's draft.
Next, both Galiardi & Stewart tap in at 21. Only Stewart has a decent amount of games in the NHL to this point, as Galiardi has only 11 at the end of last year. Still, Stewart himself has only played 53 games in the NHL himself.
Also, Stastny (the new alternate captain), Wolski and Hensick are all just 23 at this point as well. Here we see some kids about to break out, but man we're now up to 6 players starting up front for this team.
When looking at it deeper, only 2 forwards in total are over 30, Hejduk at 33 and Tucker at 34 (he sucks sooo bad too). The next oldest are two 28 year old lifetime minor leaguers!
So in summary, not only is this team young up front, it's not even very experienced with the guys who are older. Even so, I haven't been more excited to see a team out there develop and grow in a long long time. Who knows, perhaps they can shock the world!?
Not a chance.

Right place right time on the pp goal, and got the break on a change. He's putting himself in good position offensively, but his D is eh right now and skating seems actually weak. Not that this wasn't known about him, but he'll have to improve these both or he'll end up hurting his team. Streit and Roli have been the most impressive to me.

After 25 seasons and 1,645 NHL games, sure, there may be nothing left. But everybody benefits from the process of Chelios finding out, most of all the impressionable players copying his every move.
Two of those are the same age (20) as Chelios' oldest son, Dean. All but five of 29 players were born after Chelios was picked in the 1981 NHL draft.

The Press also reports that some of Wang's employees are already being moved off their efforts on the Lighthouse Project:
The source has also indicated that reorganization has already begun within Wang’s company, reassigning some top-level executives who have been key members of the Lighthouse initiative to work on other unrelated projects.
One source says it would not be surprising, given Wang’s self-imposed deadline of Oct. 3 to have an approval from Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Board before he would put an end to the project.

Hello Hamilton!
There would be too much litigation from the Toronto and Buffalo people. I don't think they'll ever move a team to Hamilton, as much as they just went through to keep a team from being moved there.
My guess? Kansas City. They've already got a new arena, (some) history of hockey, and there's nothing going on there once Chiefs season is over, and they've got a gate attraction they can sell right off the top (Tavares)

The Isles played a pre-season game in KC last month and i think it drew about 7000 fans. And last week there was a story on TSN about Gary Bettman meeting with people in Quebec about bringing a team back to the city. Much rather have another Canadian team then one in the midwest where people wont care.

Comes down to facilities. They already have the Sprint Center in KC, and the Nords left the first time over stadium issues. I don't know if that's changed any (did they do what Winnipeg did and build the stadium AFTER the Jets left?)
And if this is still the case (as it was in 94-95):
Quebec City was by far the smallest market in the NHL, and the second-smallest market in North America to host a major league team (behind only Green Bay, Wisconsin)
It doesn't make much sense to move it there.
This is a sweet jersey/logo set up though:

They LOVED that team and still root for the Avs to this day. Some have just said f the NHL I'm sure, but it was the owners that were cheap, not the fans. Those fans are insane for hockey. We surely don't need KC or any more midwest/southern teams. One US city I'd like to see get a team is Seattle.

He wants the provincial and federal governments to pony up 175 million, and he promises their taxes won't go up (even though they're going to pay 50 million under his plan).
Yeah...THAT'S going to work out.
And this:
While asking for money from Ottawa and the provincial government, Labeaume -- who is in the middle of an election campaign -- promised that Quebec City residents would not see their own taxes go up.

I've pretty much given in to the inevitability that they're gonna win the whole thing again.
They're just too good and too deep. When you can throw three centermen out there back to back to back like Crosby, Malkin, and Staal (and sometimes Crosby on the 4th line), plus 3 great offensive defencemen like Goligoski, Letang, and Gonchar, and 3 tough vets like Orpik, McKee and Eaton/Skoula, plus solid role players like Craig Adams and Max Talbot and Mike Rupp (who's on fire), and decent goaltending, there's just no way to stop them.

I think the only legit challengers to them would either be DC or Philadelphia. We have our own problems here between leaky defence and lack of secondary scoring (no one outside the top six forwards except Matt Bradley has any goals this year, and no defenceman has a goal except for Mike Green).
Philadelphia on paper should just be great, but I just don't see it. I think they're too limited offensively and skill wise to compete with Pittsburgh, and the Pens are COMPLETELY inside their heads. Plus, I wouldn't trust Ray Emery at all.

I'd be lying if I said I knew all that much about any team beyond my market, but the Caps do look tough from what I've seen through highlights and such. Philly while strong, just seem to be incapable of matching up with the Pens. It may be because I hate that team and that the Pens have dominated them of late, but they just don't feel like a legitimate threat just yet.

I think Philadelphia is WONDERFUL defensively, and they should be with Timmonen, Pronger, Coburn, Richards etc., but I think they just lack the offensive skill that DC and Pittsburgh has. Other than Gagne and Giroux, they all make me go "meh"
As they stack up:
Pittsburgh:
Kunitz Crosby Guerin
Kennedy Malkin Fedotenko
Washington:
Ovechkin Backstrom Knuble
Semin Morrison Laich
Philadelphia:
Briere Richards Gagne
Giroux Carter Hartnell
I think Philadelphia is CLEARLY third in that bunch.

Gaborik's Groin + MSG Ice = bad news, and he's pretty much their entire offence. I think they have some issues defensively as well. I don't trust any team that gives significant minutes to Michal Roszival or Wade Redden. They have an amazing PK though.
Plus, it still boggles my mind that they're paying Donald Brashear (1.4) more than they're paying Vaclav Prospal (1.1), especially when they could have just re signed Orr, who's younger, cheaper, and better.
I think Boston had a heck of a year last year, but I think it remains to be seen whether they can duplicate that. Even though they cleared up some cap room with the Kobasew deal yesterday, they're going to be hard pressed on that front all year (and Wheeler, Rask, and Savard are all FAs after this year, Savard unrestricted). I think they head the second tier, though, after the Pittsburgh/Philadelphia/Washington top tier.

Plus, because of the Kessel deal, they have Toronto's first round and second round picks this year, AND their first pick in 11, and with the Leafs looking like the worst team in the league right now, they could very easily be picking in the top 5 come June (hello Taylor Hall).

Sucks for the Pens. He was a HUGE key in the reason they were so average the first part of last year, and then a big reason (along with the Kunitz/Guerin deals) why they were able to pick it up so well over the last half and through the playoffs.

Yeah...I was just about to post this. We're in a similar situation in DC where we have something like 8 NHL defensemen on the roster, not counting Alzner and Carlson down in Hershey, plus the unresolved Michael Nylander situation, three young prospect goaltenders (Varlamov, Neuvrith and Holtby) and Jose Theodore's expiring contract.

I was on all fours and was bleeding badly. I thought I had lost my eye. Other than that, I don't remember much about the immediate impact of the skate hitting my face. I was later diagnosed with a concussion from the collision, after they sent me to a trauma center in Camden, New Jersey.
After 24 years, my career as an NHL linesman was over in an instant. The damage to my face was worse than just my nose being severed.
There were 10 fractures in my face. My right cheekbone was shattered. Between the accident and all the surgeries I've had, I lost all of my teeth. I lost my sense of smell. I developed sleep apnea. I dealt with terrible earaches caused by bone fragments in my right ear.
We have three boys. ... They would ask me "Dad, what's wrong? Why can't you come out with us?" Not being able to do anything, not being able to explain to your kids what you're feeling, is probably the toughest time I had to go through. I still suffer from post-concussion syndrome. There were times in the first year after the accident when I couldn't get out of bed for weeks.
I have almost no sense of taste. My wife Lisa would make me my favorite -- her thin crust pizza. So I could taste it better, I kept sprinkling cracked pepper on it. I still couldn't taste a thing, so I'd put on more and more with each bite. By the time I was done, I pretty much went through the whole bottle. Worse, I was sweating like I'd just run a marathon. My wife and I decided I shouldn't do that again.

with the sabres start this year and miller's great play, they have been talking a lot about both these on the local sports radio shows. i was listening today and they were talking about if miller can be considered an elite goaltender in the league. i don't think he is quite yet, i think he needs continue his play like he has through much of the rest of the season to be elite. anybody think he is elite?
they also listed their own top five and both guys included broduer, luongo, and lundquist above miller and a few others mixed in.
i'd say my top five are:
1. Luongo
2. Lundquist
3. Kiprusoff
4. Fleury (has his bad moments though)
5. Miller
would top 5 goalie in the league be considered elite? i still don't think miller is to that level.

Nope.
I was the one screaming that the move to Newark was a bad idea, but everyone claimed the "public transportation" was so much better there.
Here's a hint - New Jersey people DO NOT take public transportation. We drive. EVERYWHERE. When we go into New York City WE DRIVE.
We don't take trains, buses, or subways.
And no one wants to drive into the ghetto that is Newark to see a hockey game.

I think that's a pretty good list, although I probably wouldn't put Kiprusoff so high because he's so inconsistent, and he usually starts out slow every year because he comes to camp completely out of shape. The guy's still an absolute horse though, but that's Calgary's fault for pretty much having nobody behind him.
I think there's more than 5 elite goaltenders. I would go with (in no particular order)
Luongo, Lundqvist, Fleury, Brodeur, Nabokov, Kiprusoff, Backstrom, Cam Ward, Vokoun
I think you could make a case that all those guys are "elite". Tomas Vokoun is awesome, but he plays on team that no one notices.
Guys that are just on the cusp of being elite:
Pekka Rinne, Mason, Hiller, Craig Anderson

To the Sabres start:
Buffalo has had a pretty favorable schedule so far- 9 games in 28 days. Only Detroit and NJ could be considered "contenders" out of who they've faced. No Philly, no Pittsburgh, No Rangers, No Capitals and No Bruins. And no 3 in 4s.
They've done what they should have done this year, but I'm interested to see how this team does against a tough upcoming schedule and tougher competition:
November (13 in 30 nights, 3 vs Philly, 2 vs Boston, 1 vs Washington 3 games in 4 nights 4 times)
Plus, December is a brute too, basically going every other night.
I like what I'm seeing so far, but the next two months are going to be character defining months.

I don't agree with Staal on that list at all. The guy JUST turned 25, and his best years are ahead of him, and further, it doesn't help him that he's the only impact player on that team (and the only guy that can score).
In Sather's defense, at least he found someone stupid enough to take Gomez' ludicrous contract off his hands in Bob Gainey. Doesn't help that he went IMMEDIATELY spent that money on Gaborik (wouldn't it have been better to wait and see how the Kovalchuk situation panned out?)
Next year, they'll be paying Drury, Redden and Roszival a combined 18.5 million.

And where's Dustin Penner on that list? They paid him 4.25 to put up 37 points last year, and the year before that, they paid him 4.25 to put up a sweet 23/24/47 -12

Vesa Toskala (4 million)
Donald Brashear (another Sather gem...1.5 this year, 1.3 the next)
Roberto Luongo (just for the sheer enormity of next season...he's making 10 MILLION before it cuts back to a more reasonable 6)
Ryan Malone (on the hook for 6 million this year and next, plus 5 and a half the season after that)

I think they'll be a lot better (the Leafs that is) as the season goes on and Kessel gets more time back. Their problem is goaltending and defense. Toskala is terrible, and Gustavsson's a baby, and Komisarek hasn't really done all that well (neither has Luke Schenn or Francois Beauchemin).
I don't see the Canes really being able to come back from being so far down in a hole, especially because the Southeast has really improved. Washington's a no-brainer, Tampa's starting to turn it around (smart acquisitions on defense, Stamkos making The Leap), Atlanta's one of the best offensive teams in the league (they won't stop anyone from scoring, but between Kovalchuk, Kubina, Little, Bogosian, Hainsey, Enstrom and Peverley, they'll put a TON of pucks in the net). They've even got Maxim Afinogenov looking pretty good, which i'm sure will want to make people in Buffalo put toothpicks through their eyes.
Right now, the Thrashers have scored 63 goals, which is 3rd best in the entire league. I can't see the Canes finishing better than 4th in the division, especially when the inter divisional stuff picks up (I don't think the Caps play another division game until the end of this monf).

I'm just not sure if the Isles have the depth to hold up the entire season. Right now, they've given up 4 more goals than they've scored, and they've also gotten the 1 point OT bonus 7 times, which is highest in the league. I think once Boston gets everyone healthy, they'll start to assert themselves, and I don't think the Isles will have enough firepower to keep up with them, Atlanta, and Tampa.
I will give them a ton of credit for working and playing as hard as they do. That's an easy team to root for. Trent Hunter is great, I love Sean Bergenheim's speed, and Tavares is the real deal.

thomas could be the first goalie to win the vezina and be a backup the next season.
That huge deal they signed Thomas to doesn't look so good now, especially since cap problems have cost them Kessel and Chuck Kobasew, and they still have to sign Savard to an extension.

i've never beena huge thomas guy, i think he had a great year on a GREAT team last year that kinda inflated his numbers. we'll see how it turns out.
lucic out another 4 weeks with a high ankle sprian after a slewfoot from zidliky the other night. fucking cheap, no call.

Its also a little dicey to give a 35 year old a 4 year deal with an annual cap hit of 5. That's too many years.
It will help their cap some that the Murray buyout is coming off the books after this year, but they'll have the Schaefer and Eaves buyouts costing them close to a million next year (and Lucic's 4 year extension kicks in at a little over 4, not to mention Rask's extension at 1 and 1.5 kicks in).
I think they'll be able to sign Savard, but I can't see how they will be able to afford to keep Wheeler.

i was reading they are trying to sign him [savard] to a deal in the neighborhood of 7/32m. wheeler could turn out to be good in the end, kinda soft and doesn't use his size, at all really, but losing him wouldn't kill them. they have some good depth in their farm system with a bunch of guys waiting to crack the lineup... if sabotka doesn't end up packaged with one of the B's first round picks at the deadline he's gonna be in the lineup next year.

fuck you ovechkin.
This time, I agree with you.
For the second time in three games, Alex Ovechkin has been tossed from a game. This time, he was assessed a five minute kneeing major and a game misconduct for a knee-on-knee collision with Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason in the Hurricanes' zone early in the first period.
Ovechkin also appears to have suffered a right knee injury. That -- if it's bad -- could be worse than any suspension/fine he might be facing from the NHL.
Update:A Caps spokesman just said the team will not make an announcement on Ovechkin's injury tonight.
To sum it up quickly: he hit Gleason knee on knee, both guys went to the locker room. Ovi wasn't putting any weight on his right leg, which is probably a bad sign. Gleason came back after missing a few shifts.
Completely indefensible.

Yah, both are REALLY BAD too. I can't believe how stupid Ovech has been of late, as he's too good for it and doesn't need to go there.
On a positive note, Duchene while playing good from the start of the year, is really coming of age of late and has 2 goals tonight in TB. They'll need it too, bc Jones and Hejduk are out up front, and Foote, Cumiskey on D. The Avs being cold of late, really need someone to pick them up and my thoughts are it HAS to be him and Stastny.

The key point, for those who don't follow hockey, is that he got hit by his own player in frustration! This will be one of the first fines/suspensions laid on a player for hitting his own...but it's surely going to happen.

Duchene followed up his 2 goal/GWG night in Tampa with a 3pt (1G/2A) night vs the Panthers. He's now up to 17 points and 5 in the last two. He really is stepping up and helped the Avs steal a point last night. He and Galiardi both scored within one minute to send the game into overtime. Take away some clearly AWFUL calls against the Avs, and they surely would have won this one in regulation.
Duchene was taken out on a play when a panther not only threw an elbow to his face, he also laid out the knee. No call and Stewart (3pts at that point in the game) came to his defense as he should and they gave him a INSTIGATOR for it which TOTALLY abuses the fucking stupid rule in the first place. I absolutely hate that they'll let a douche play dirty and then get rewarded for it bc he ran for cover after pulling that bullshit. Funny enough, we had something just like that happen in our game last night (my team) and the refs let us defend our guys better than the NHL. The league is really sad in this respect right now. He also got a game misconduct (usually the case in this situation) and wasn't available for the OT and shootout. Both refs should ref fucking soccer.

Yah, and once again they actually gave the Avs more penalty minutes out of it. He literally unloaded on Anderson (which they got away with the whole game bc they'd call the Avs any time they made them pay), and Foote received not one, but TWO roughing penalties for going after Ballard. The NHL will cry soon when the likes of Marty, Kipper, Luongo or Miller gets injured for the season and the Olympics. I can't stress enough the need for fighting and the ability to make people pay for douche moves in hockey. Take it away and you'll continue to see great players getting hurt on bullshit plays by lesser, unskilled, unpolished, unprofessional players.

After watching it again I dunno, he was out of the crease, I don't think he would have gotten touched if he were hugging the post. Anderson put himself in harms way in my opinion.

You had to see the whole game to understand the context. He literally ran Anderson about 5 times. This didn't happen by chance, he tried to make it look that way. Goalies are often out of the crease, but I can tell you I've never took one out 5 times in one game.

-Keith's deal is for 13 years. Wow.
-They're going to have to dump salary in order to get all this to fit next year. They might end up moving Cam Barker, aka The Booby Prize (he's the guy Chicago picked 3rd in 2004 after DC picked Ovechkin and Pittsburgh picked Malkin).
