If he hadn't gotten sick I have a feeling he would have been a coach that would have stuck with the Devils.

I like Matt Duchene, but its amazing how similar his numbers are to the Mystery Player here:

Duchene: 24/31/55
Mystery Player: 22/28/50

QUALCOMP

Duchene: -.056
Mystery Player: .021

QUALTEAM

Duchene: -.011
Mystery Player: -.042

So if you're keeping score, Mystery Player puts up numbers equivalent to Matt Duchene, while playing with worse teammates and against better competition, yet he's not really in the Calder Trophy race and pretty much isn't being talked about this year at all.

(Mystery Player, BTW, is John Tavares)

Also, if we lived in a just world, the Vezina would go to Tomas Vokoun.

*He faces over 34 shots a game (most in the league)

*Florida generates 28 shots a game (close to dead last, only Colorado and Minnesota are worse)

*Florida is 25th in G 5/5, 28th in total goals (198), 28th in GF/G (2.48).

*Florida’s PP is also 29th in the league, ahead of only Toronto. They’re converting at 10.5% on the Road (dead last), and 17.7 at home (21st).

Ryan Miller is going to win this award, but for all the talk going on out there about how he gets no support, the numbers just don't back it up. I think what people are missing entirely is that Buffalo is not a bad offensive team.

Buffalo is 10th overall in GF/G at 2.81, they’re 8th overall in the league at G 5/5, 11th overall in total goals, their home PP is 10th in the league at 21.2%, (overall its at 16th, 17.6%).

Vokoun’s .925 and 2.55 while facing 34 shots a game are much more impressive to me than Miller’s .928 and 2.23 while facing 31 shots a game (Buffalo also generates the 7th most shots in the league).

gotta throw tyler myers name in the calder race with those two:

11/36/47
+/-14
avg over 23 mins a game

he has been one of the most reliable players on the sabres this year. sure, he makes the rookie mistakes, like on an atrocious play by him last night against boston that lead to satan's goal. but he also jumps up into the offensive play a lot. he is a great player to watch. i really hope he continues to develop and improves on his play in the next few years.

First off, he's ALWAYS discussed and gets a ton more PP time and first line players on his line as well. Duchene has played with nothing but rookies as well almost all year, with the likes of Hejduk at times and rookies Yip, Galiardi. The kid is also in a TIGHT playoff race and is playing very responsible, something Tavares simply isn't doing. Is he a good sniper and future player, sure, but he's not in my top two for the Calder.

MY vote is torn bt Myers and Duchene. I don't like all the secondary assists for Myers, but he's outstanding none the less. I rule Howard out bc of his age and extensive years in the minors and even teh NHL last year.

Again I simply don't agree and going purely on stats isn't correct. I think Vok's year has been very good but not at teh level of Miller by a long shot. You act as if every shot is equal, leagues are equal and pressure is equal. Quite simply, they are not, among many other factors. Miller and Bryz are my top too, regardless of stats. Who? Tavares? Who mentions Tavares in any Calder talk? None that i've heard/read. Its always Duchene, Myers, or Rask.

Tavares TOI/60 on the PP is 3.84. Duchene's TOI/60 on the PP is 2.95. Not much of a difference there when you consider that Colorado's top PP TOI/60 man is Paul Stastny at 3.54 (that tells me the Isles pretty much just have one unit, which is going to skew PP/TOI numbers in favor of Tavares, and Colorado has also had more PP opps than the Isles have).

Duchene may be playing with nothing but rookies, but according to their QUALTEAMs, those rookies are better than anything Tavares is playing with. Tavares' team was also out of it by mid season, unlike Coloardo.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Tavares should win the Calder, I just think its interesting his numbers are so similar to Duchene's (and tougher) and he doesn't really generate the same heat Duchene does. Both those guys are doing much better than Stamkos did last year (he didn't win the Calder, but he put up 23/23/46)

No love for Rask for the Calder? He gets less support than Vokoun does, and plays in front of the worst offense in the league.

The fact that Vokoun puts up just as good numbers as Miller does while under considerably more pressure every night (from facing the more shots than any other goaltender in the league) is a pretty good indicator that the guy is great at what he does.

Your qualteams stats are pure garbage and I give them no weight at ALL. As for Rask, I LOVE him, but he's simply not playing enough to oust guys who played every game like Tavares, Duchene and Myers. I listen to the NHL radio daily and this debate comes up often. Also, I have Center Ice and watch games around the league and there too it has been discussed throughout the year.

The top names have come and gone, but Tavarez, Duchene and Myers are ALWAYS in the discussion. Howard has been a second half of the season addition bc he's been a big part of Detroit's comeback (along with injured players returning) of late. Also, Tavares has 7 pts in the last week of play, so his numbers are now suddenly much closer than a week ago while Myers and Duchene have had to play tough playoff implication type games. In fact, the Avs had a TON of injuries and almost never had the same guys out there all year. They've lost more man games to injury than the Wings and nobody would notice bc Sacco has done a masterful job in his first season. I lean toward Myers and Duchene still.

Amazing what that team can hide bc here are his stats:

22nd in save % at .910
34th in goals against average at 2.82
Yet somehow still 13th in wins with 29 working with other Washington goalies. How o how can this be? I'm not convinced he was EVER good, minus his "propecia" enhanced year in Montreal...contract year or not.

By the way, it's about time Barry Trotz gets his fair share of credit being a VERY good coach making the playoffs quietly every year with lesser talent. What a job he's done yet again this year. I hope they too can upset some top teams in the West.

Barry Trotz is great in my book. Been with his team longer than anyone in the league besides Ruff. Puts out a consistently solid team in one of the worse hockey markets in the league. Top 3 coaches in the NHL if you ask me.

Duncan Keith is going to win the Norris, but:

Duncan Keith (whose name is frequently thrown around as a Norris contender this year) has been on the ice for 11% fewer goals for at 5-on-5 (90 to 80) than Mike Green. He’s also been on the ice for 46% more goals against (50 to 73) than Green. All while Green sees 21% less ice time 5-on-5.

Just sayin.....:bye:

I have no idea why the Rangers didn't attack at all in OT. They were playing for the shootout. Their shootout record isn't even above 50%.

And gosh, Sam Rosen and crew had nothing good to say about the Flyers. An occasional, 'Oh, and Boucher made a good save. But how about them Rangers!'

Good for the Rangers to get even this close.

They suck. They arent going to do any real damage in the playoffs, and Im tired of wasting my time working at the stadium. So basically I want them out in 4 so my season there is done and I can focus on better money elsewhere.

Montreal was the LAST team I wanted in the first round. They have the second best PP in the league overall, and are converting at 28% on the road, best in the league (even though they've had the fewest opportunities in the league on the road), and our biggest team weakness is the PK. Their PK is also top 10.

Then they had the BALLS to call a holding on the Avs in which it was actually the other way around. And trust me, even the opposing crew was shocked at these missed and messed up calls.

Four straight game one losses for the sharks. They can't be confident after all these years of choking, but the Avs have to play their asses off to keep in the series. One can dream baby!

What makes it more heartbreaking is the fact that we totally outplayed them. If it wasn't for the fact that Boucher played out of his mind, this would have been a blowout.

Seriously, when the fuck did he decide he was actually going to be good? The guy hasn't been considered good enough to stay with any team more than 2 seasons at a time and has a career record of 101-121-30. All of a sudden he becomes a brick wall?

Backstrom's been battling a really bad cold all week (almost sidelined him for Game 1).

What a hit. Damn. Leopold, keep your head up man.

this is what the AP story says about the hit:

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jordan Leopold lay on the ice for several minutes after being leveled by an elbow hit from Ottawa defenseman Andy Sutton late in the first period of their playoff game Friday night, but got up before being helped to the locker room.

Leopold was skating along the boards when Sutton upended him with a raised left elbow at 17:41, causing Leopold's helmet to fly off as he left his feet. Sutton's momentum carried him into one of the penalty boxes.

i watched that clip MANY times and have yet to see "a raised left elbow". sutton's elbow was tucked down to his body. totally clean in my book. like you said keithy, keep your damn head up or it's gonna get destroyed.

The AP should learn that just because a hit is violent and someone is laid out, doesn't mean it is a dirty hit. In the clip you provided you could hear the announcers say that it was a clean hit.

It was clean.

These refs in the Devils Flyers series are awful. They're calling minor shit.

What a game, but you honestly can't give a team 7 PP without asking them to beat you. I was sitting next to my buddy tonight (we both ditched the Yankees game tonight to go to playoff hockey) and compared it to not giving a baseball team 4 outs in an inning. Still, I thought the refs called come weak ass penalties. the one i remember was Clarkson making a great play back on D in an odd man rush and they called him for tripping when he just flat out made a good play. Nonetheless, win game 3 in Philly and home ice comes back!

My issue is with consistency. It's all I ask, call the game equal one way or another (loose or tight). It's a bunch of shit when Foote can't body up at the net and they can lay our guys out all over the ice from behind, nowhere near the puck with multiple blood drawing/stitch requiring sticks to the face right in front of the ref. They seriously wanted the sharks to win this game, that much was obvious. They got their wish, barely.

Oh and LOVING how Buf is playing in this game. Rask looked weak on that second no look bad angle back hand by the Buf 4th line.

In all serious, they and the sharks should all but role and anyone saying less is simply making excuses. Mudo has to know this, especially on the Ovechkin injury thing. That was nothing short of sad to see, but expected unfortunately. For a guy who lives the most obscure stats, you simply factor out the heart, grit and on-ice leadership that was clearly lacking in both the olympics and game one. 0 shots is a stat the speaks volumes with all those shifts he had and the many shots the Caps had in an OT game.

It's one thing to be a fan, it's another to be a fan boi. You're seriously on that edge for a guy who I usually respect a lot in the hockey world.

Todays Devils/Flyers game was absolute bullshit. The calls are just absurd. And these refs need to let border line stuff go in overtime. And if players are pushing each other, or some gives a player a wack on the shin after words have been exchanged, who cares. It's playoff hockey. It's more physical out there.

And as for Crosby, I do respect him as a player. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time and has an amazing amount of hockey sense. I guess it pisses me off how he's been put on a pedestal. It's not his fault, but it just irks me.

I hate to say it, but both Crosby and Ovechkin are simply that good too. They f'n deserve their pedestal, just one has stanley cups and olympic golds on it while the other never shuts up/says stupid shit when things are good (and is awol when going bad). He's the NHL's Terrel Owens.

I wouldn't go as far as calling him Terrel Owens. I mean, he has his moments, but Owens really disrupts a team. Ovechkin can be an asshole, but I his team wins. Even though he'll have a few games where you see hardly any effort, he makes up for it with his ability to change a game.

I will say that I think it's bad when a player doesn't give his all every game. I'm a Devils fan, but a great example of playing 100% all the time is Zach Parise. He never gives up on plays and glady goes into the trenches.

Yes, because its always fun to take quotes out of context:

Ovechkin was asked why the Capitals had success Saturday and he suggested Halak was suffering from some playoff jitters.

"You just have to make some traffic in front of him and find the rebounds," Ovechkin said. "He gives up lots of rebounds. I watched the replay when [Eric] Fehr scored the goal and his arm was like shaking when he drank water. So, he's nervous. He knows all the pressure is on him and that's a good sign for us."

Q: You came on and during your very first shift you knocked down two or three Canadiens. Was that your new strategy for this game?

Ovechkin: "Strategy? To destroy people? No, my job is to score goals and if I have a chance to hit somebody I'm going to hit him. It was good mentally for me when it was (Marc-Andre) Bergeron, my first hit. He's not that strong of a guy, and it was mentally good for me."

I never understood all the hate for Crosby and the seemingly indifference to Ovechkin. Don't get me wrong, it does not bother me in the least that people aren't fans of Sid but the reasoning never seems to add up. I can only assume it is because he does nothing but win because the notion that he is a "diver" or whatever is utterly false. Ovechkin on the other hand, while also immensely talented, is just such a douche bag. If you're not from Washington, I really can't see what is remotely likeable about that guy.

I think its even more the fact that they started doing it before Crosby accomplished anything in the pros. The NHL was so desperate for people to latch onto someone that they were bathing this kid in praise and christening him "The Next One".

I mean, really? Hes good but he cant even touch guys like Gretzky and Lemieux in their prime. Nobody in the league can. At least those guys won some scoring titles or MVP's before the media started sucking their dicks.

Ovechkin Twisted Story (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=318589)

I need to see this article you quote too Mudo, bc I need to make sure it wasn't a followup conversation/statement to make his past quotes less caustic by design after the fact.

Link up, mine is above.

They both come from this NHL.com interview (http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=526006)

Questions 5 and 7, both near the end of the article.

I never thought it possible to hate an entire city based on its sports fans, but I really hate Philadelphia. Oh how I want Carcillo and Asham to be laid out on the ice. I miss Scott Stevens.

So as much as the officiating has been dreadful, the Devils aren't taking advantage of their chances. They need to simplify their game. Stop with the no look passes. They haven't worked all this series.

I think that they will win at home. I don't know if they have the make up that they had when they were down 3-1 to the Flyers in the past. But, I'm not losing hope.

And God, I would love to resign Kovalchuk. He's played his heart out in this series. He's been the best player on the Devils.
