The Prez of the KHL offered him a 17 year deal and choice of team (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/KHL-President-offers-Kovalchuk-17-year-deal-cho?urn=nhl-258875)

Also, the arbitrator awarded Blake Wheeler 2.2 million in his case, and I think Niemi's decision is due today

Blackhawks’ Niemi gets $2.75M in arbitration (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=ap-blackhawks-niemi)

Wow, talk about loyalty to the guy who helped you get ur first cup in decades and finally solidified ur net! I'm not saying he's 2.75 good, but it's not that far off. To say the least, I'm surprised a little even knowing the financial crisis they are in....were in.

I'm not. That whole situation is, as you say, a mess not only with the Cap, but financially (they took a bath last year (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-0730-confidential-hawks-20100730,0,3785092,full.column) to where they're increasing tix by like 20%).

Niemi was an average goaltender on an above-average defensive team. They'll save some money with Turco and probably do just as well in that department. (Turco's SV% was slightly better, .913 to .912, on a team that was much worse than the Blackhawks, and in more games).

I always liked Turco, but he is old and close to breaking down. It's more the signal it sends to gts and players on this team. I know their hands are forced, but Nems surely has more upside right now and Turco goes into a spot he's bound to fail. They'll be hard pressed to get through the WEST again, and he'll see a ton less D and skilled play in front of him. More than last year, but less in terms of Chicago's roster. Nems could have played ok and the fans would still love him regardless. Now they bring in an ex-enemy into a position of questionable outlook to say the least.

Not to mention Turco needs to be able to handle the puck. I truly believe that rule hurt no goalie as much as it hurt Turco. Both Martys were impacted the most hands down. If the rule come out when Roy played, it would have helped him!

Sucks that the deal didn't go through with the Devils and Kovalchuk, but I'm still holding out hope that they can work something out.

Last night on NHL network they had game six of the Devils and Stars series and it made me really happy to know we have Arnott back. We've been missing a presence like that at center for awhile.

I told all the myopic devil fans that this contract would never stand. Now we'll see a LOT of teams finally sign some players for two reasons. 1) They now realize they CAN'T throw front-loaded contracts followed by near nothing in terms of money to cheat the cap system even with lesser contracts. 2) Camps are only about a month away so teams need to either reach or get below the cap basement and roof respectively soon. Lineups will be solidified soon based on what needs each team has and how close they feel they are to making a run.

Lots of stuff going on in DC right now

According to multiple sources, free agent centre Eric Belanger has a one-year deal in waiting to return to the Washington Capitals. The contract is believed to be a slight raise over the $1.75-million he made last season, to $1.85-million.

What's interesting is that he has been told not to announce where he's going, leading to Belanger telling the French language newspaper Le Soleil on Wednesday that he is about to sign but can't say where due to the fact the team he's headed to is working on a trade.

Washington apparently does not want to announce they've signed Belanger in order to help first complete another deal, potentially to move out a forward and bring in a defenceman. I'm told that one player the Caps are looking to trade is 26-year-old Tomas Fleishmann, who had 23 goals and 51 points in a bit of a breakout season last year and signed a one-year, $2.6-million deal this summer.

As for the rumors of players maybe having to go we have Elias, Zubrus & Salvador, Rolston or Arnott (I know he just got back this summer). It seems Elais and Rolston are safe for now. Dealing Zubrus (whom I love) and Salvador will give them room to absorb Kovy's deal and re-sign Mottau.

The Ilya Kovalchuk saga has come to an end.

Kovalchuk will be a New Jersey Devil after all, and the circumvention investigations of the contracts for Roberto Luongo, Marc Savard, Chris Pronger and Marian Hossa will not be pursued.

As a result of the finding by Arbitrator Richard Bloch on August 9, 2010, that Ilya Kovalchuk's initial free agent contract with the New Jersey Devils, dated July 19, 2010, constituted a circumvention of the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement (the "CBA"), the National Hockey League announced today that the Club has been disciplined in accordance with Section 26.13(c) of the CBA as follows:

The Club has been fined $3 million.

The Club will forfeit its third-round draft choice in 2011 as well as a first-round draft choice in one of the next four Entry Drafts.

I couldn't disagree with this move more. If they are taken to task, after so many affronts to this very rule happening before the Kovi deal, it's a joke. I agree it should have been nixed and to be honest the next one and those other deals should never have happened. However, it's a joke to go this route under the circumstances the league itself allowed to happen. Sure they needed to lay down the law, but not at this point bc it's the problem they helped create.

Maybe it looks different in Jersey, but from where I'm sitting Kovalchuk is going to have to score a few hundred goals a year for the next decade to make this look good (and probably increase his defensive efforts)."

i for one am happy that the devils got what they wanted. i was not surprised that bettman fined them and took away future draft picks. the fine would have been enough but i guess dear ol' gary had to make an example of the devs....that being said the devils can choose when they want to give up their drafts and if you think about it it isn't as bad or harsh as everyone is making it out to be.

i'm just glad it's over and done with and can't wait for the season to start.

by the way.....FUCK bettman

forgot to mention: love the buffalo road sweaters. much nicer old school look.......that slug-like thing on their other "new" jerseys are just silly.

They have to give up a firt round pick. I call bullshit.

If this was how things were done when other teams made these types of deals then so be it. But to start the punishments now? That's garbage.

Two rockie games had 11,000 first night and 14,000 the second night of hockey hungery fans come out to support.

Yah, your board is yankee/wfan insane if they think they'll get O'Reilly, Galiardi and the like for a salary dump old codger looking to hand the C to Parise. If it happens, look for a 3rd/4th pick and a guy like Holos or something on D bc they're light up front, not on the blue line. I'm not saying their D is ready, but the depth and talent there outweighs that at forward.

I wouldn't even be surprised if they dumped a big contract strictly for a pick or two to meet their sal cap issues head on. Langs has to allow the trade too bc he has a no trade clause I believe.

They played a very fast, physical and tight checking game to beat the Avs. They looked good and we all know Okposo continues to get better each year and Streit has a pretty good shot from the point, especially on the pp. They should continue to fight on the edge of the playoff picture, but there aren't many spots left in the East so to me it'll come down to their goal tending. Not so sure DP will stay healthy much less play great, and Rolo is surely going to slow down being that he's 60.

I also heard that Lamoriello was against the Kovalchuk deal, and now he's letting the team swing in the breeze a little to make his point to ownership.

Not the whole truth. They did in fact have limited players due to injuries and the fact they couldn't add BECAUSE of cap issues UNTIL they were surely going on any form of IR. Once on IR, their salaries don't count against the cap for that time or in other words, they can make a move to add from there but not before they placed guys like Rolston on IR.

Also, to fit them back on the roster, they'll HAVE to make a move, cut or demotion. They are in and have been in a ton of cap issues since they brought in the big contract.

They look like anything BUT the Devils. They better get fixed fast or they will be the worst team in the NHL.
Worst start in franchise history.
It's sad.

it's not their worst start in franchise history, in 83-84 they went 1-12 after 13 games. it is their least amount of goals after 13 games though.

and Parise is out for 3 months, torn miniscus. that's just what we need in his RFA year too.

2nd half is when you hope to pull out of it!? You do know the Devs are 14 games or 17% into the season right?! You want to wait until game 43 to get it going? By then, you're done. They had a nice win tonight and it's marty's right elbow that was banged up. He couldn't hold the stick/had little power/motion after taking the shot. He says he's fine now and it was just a stinger that took more time to go away.

Yea I know they're not even 20% into the season. To be honest I am half paying attention to hockey with Football in full swing. But this seems to be one of the worst starts in a long while the Devils have had. New coach, major player out for 3 months. Banged up bench. Cap problems. This team is in for a long season so far as I've seen.

But you are the resident hockey guru around here. I'll defer to your judgement.

I'm happy with this win for the Devils tonight. They really needed something to feel good about, and tonight they they showed it.

I think Brodeur will be fine. He seemed to be fine when they interviewed him in the locker room.

I also think that the team will rally around the Parise injury and do better now. They're missing a huge piece to the team, but I just think they'll rebound from everything.

While I just want to see an Islander win, it would have been interesting to see Briere back on the ice for this one. First the Avs lose Stewart for over a month bc he broke his hand rearranging someone's face, now they go about trading a solid early round defensive prospect for a struggling d man with a decent salary from a cap strapped Bruin team with Savard coming back soon?!?! WTF Sherman? I can see moving someone like Cumiskey or someone like Wilson, both paid very little and fits the Bruin's need at this point. However, moving a guy like Cohen to a team with little wiggle room for a 7th rounder clearly struggling in his own end and not living up to his perceived strength moving the puck and joining the rush simply doesn't make sense.

While I hope the up tempo game in Colorado, where the D is encouraged to join the rush at almost all times will help him, I simply don't see that the Avs needed give up such a huge prospect due to their situation and Hunwick's trade value. Julian's system surely doesn't fit the 25 year old d man, but to me Boston won this trade in a big way. It may not show this year as Hunwick is clearly more NHL ready and 21 year old Cohen had only a brief few games up with the Avs this year despite many injuries on their blue line.

The future for this 6'2" 200+ physical defender with a power play qb ability and huge RIGHT-handed shot from the point will surely be a huge gain down the road for the fans in Boston. Hell, he's already a hero due to his game-winning NCAA championship goal in BU two years ago. Enjoy Cohen you massholes! I know I was eagerly awaiting his arrival with the Avs until now.

I actually drink with his cousin who tends bar up at Ziggy's in Montreal at our annual hockey tournament. He's a good guy no doubt, as is his cousin, but man it's easy to see he hasn't done a good job behind the bench. Perhaps they are waiting for some guys to get back from injury, but salary/payroll is the next issue they'll have to deal with when that happens. Lou and the owner put some tough obstacles in his way in that area, but also one can't look past the injuries. Still, most teams are dealing much the same and making much better adjustments. Bottom line, I've never seen the Devs look this bad top down.

Hey, as an Avs fan I just went through this a few years back in the dark ages under our old mascot howler quennville. He took WAY too long to adjust to the new fast NHL and I'm one to say he had so much talent in Chicago last year he HAD to win minus a matchup versus Pitt or Washington. Those two could have/should have beat them. However, Mont and Philly played above their heads and have now built into even better teams.

As for the Avs, I love their core in every way on every line. Stastny, Duchene, O'Reilly up the middle. Wings with Fleishman, Stewart, Mueller (if concussions don't end his career extremely early), Yip, Galiardi and Jones already with the team. Hishon, Stoa, Olver and others in the minors in the future. And just a TON of puck moving D men coming up soon (Barrie, Elliot, Guance & Rutkowski) or already here and lighting it up like Shattenkirk. Hell he's already the top scoring rookie D man with 9 less games and 2 more points. His right handed shot and even better passes on the pp point have been a HUGE help in getting the Av's pp into the top 5. As for goalies they picked up two good prospects in the draft last year in Calvin Pickard and Sami Aittokallio and one will hopefully emerge to take over for Anderson in a 2-3 years time or quicker.

In short, I like most of what Sherman/Lacroix have done recently. Yet I'm still pissed about that Hunwick for Cohen trade. It really doesn't make any sense to me at all. Hannan for Fleishman makes more sense immediately from a contract and need sense, let alone the fact that Fleishman comes from a very similar system in Washington but was buried behind some huge names there.

No way. It's only December. And they've been hit with significant injuries (Schultz) and flu kicking their asses, not to mention have been extremely unlucky (I believe their shooting pct. is something like 3 or 4 % during the streak). Not that those are really excuses, but slides happen.

If they had lost to Ottawa last night, and then gone winless the rest of the week (NJ and Pittsburgh), then I think something would have happened before the Carolina game on the 26th.

There was something that "clicked" between the second and third periods of the Boston game. They had been getting pummeled, down 3-0 and then all of a sudden came out firing in the third. They carried that over (for the most part) against Ottawa.

I wouldn't say "no way" on this bc their coach isn't really getting much from the team and they seem lost. He was a good fit when he came in the last time they lost 5 in a row, but now he simply goes in the locker room and says the f-word 50 times not really saying much. He seems like a nice enough guy but sometimes a change is needed. I don't really see them making the Cup right now, much less winning it with Philly, Mont and of course Pitt in the way. However, a coaching move couldn't hurt but I doubt Leonsis has a backup plan right now.

On the other hand, I LOVE the way Bylsma and Shero run that team in Pitt. I've missed a few eps no doubt, but every time I tune in they really run a nice program up there in Pitt.

Ha, sorry got all crazy happy thinking about it/writing it out. My point was going to be that if you have the right front office in this league one can turn SHIT around real quick.

and if the front office is headed by darcy regier, be prepared for a long stretch of mediocrity. :wallbash:

I guess the Devils are going back to the beginning. Like 1983. When they were one of the worst teams in the league.

For several reasons they suck this year. Man it hurts. But I think Johnny Mac got a raw deal. His first chance to coach in the NHL and he gets stuck with the cluster fuck that is the Devils this year.
he deserved better.

And I wonder what Lamoriello said to Lemaire to bring him back?

Don't worry. A similar situation worked out okay for Peter Laviolette.

i was in the nhl suite last night at the Rock and after a few minutes went by in the 3rd period we all just went inside the suite and turned all the tv's on to different nhl games. thats how bad things have gotten, most of us were happier watching other teams play on fucking tv than watch our own team get their shit pushed in by the islanders.

Yah and I was actually kidding bc I have no hate for the Devs. Just wanted to point out how over the top biased his statement was.

On another note, the Avs aren't looking good of late after a 6 game winning streak. Long break now, so get well soon Mueller, Stewart and Hejduk!

Thanks grammie grammar check. I REALLY didn't know the difference and that wasn't a quick hit and run mix up.

Oh and yes it should always be pointed out when someone is being a complete homer. ALWAYS.

I'm glad I could help.

Also, even objectively, the Penguins would be at or near the top as best teams to watch. 24/7, best record in the league with the greatest player in the world.. it's hard to argue. But, I"m sure you will. And, go..
