You don't remember the rats from the 1996 season and the Beezer?

Oh and Jovo is OLLLLLD and SLOOOOOOOOOWW. I'm really not big on that move if any your team made. Wasn't it 4 f'n years too?! If so he MAY get to help the kids from this years draft with his walker, but man most won't even touch the NHL for years buddy. Even Hru isn't ready this year, and he's a forward.

Should have used a comma after rats. He was there back then.

"Scott Mellanby scores two goals and kills a rat in the Panthers’ dressing room prior to the team’s 4-3 victory over the Calgary Flames. Mellanby’s feat is dubbed a “Rat Trick” by John Vanbiesbrouck, and within weeks, fans begin tossing rats onto the ice to celebrate Florida goals."

http://panthers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=61432

Seems like the cap money had to be used this season. And there were no stars..ok there is one out there. Overall I'm happy with the moves. This new Gm put together a winning team before. So that plays a part.

I used to live not far from the pizza joint where Beezer met his wife. And was sad when he left the team.

Wow they did a good job with little space and seemingly moves to be made. They moved a goalie not coming back if not moved for a first and second, destroyed vokouns market and got him at a 2 million dollar discount at least, and finally have a vet to lock down that position and help teach neur and holtby. Oh and it's 1 year! Unreal!

Or 8 years and 49.5 million less than Philly signed Bryz for. Or the exact same amount FLA just signed Jose Theodore for.

Unreal. He turned Varlamov into two high draft picks, and Tomas Vokoun. GMGM is the man. Still have to sign Alzner and Brouwer, so something's going to have to be done. Lots of chatter that Alexander Semin may be moved out of town.

Cats had to make the salary cap floor. I believe they were 30 or 40 million short going into yesterday. Sucks for everyone else, because of the fact they have to sign all of these ridiculous deals to make floor (like Jovo's and Flash's), it's going to drive up everyone else's price at arbitration and when their deals are up.

I didn't think they were that bad! What is the actual number, bc I thought the Avs were the second worst going in (meaning needed to spend 15 mil just to get to the floor). The team that needed to spend the most as I knew it, was Phoenix. Capgeek.com here i come.

I think they're still a million below the floor, but since the 1st, they've added around 21-22 million. Add in Campbell's deal it's close to thirty they've spent (cap hit's on the right). This doesn't include Matt Bradley's deal either, which just went down last night.

Yesterday they got Matt Bradley from the Caps. Is this guy a goon? 531 penalty minutes in 630 career games. My sports paper shows. I have to admit I'm a homer when it comes to sports. I follow my team and that's about it.

thats not a goon that only works out to be less than 1 penalty minute a game

for example last season Zenon Konopka of the islanders had 307 penalty minutes ... thats just one season

i dont really follow hockey anymore, but if there is one thing ive noticed about it, its that guys can still play and be productive well into their late 30's. I bet it has alot to do with the overall career and that skating puts less stress on your ankles and knees and lower back than running does. All the pounding up and down probably contributes to the fact that guys fall off in football and basketball usually earlier than guys fall off in the NHL

and i know there is a couple guys in the NHL who are 40 and still play

Wow! I also read that these older players could help in getting other teammates over from other teams that they are buds with. Upshall-Jovanovski. That could work out with Brad Richards.

Deal's completely front loaded. I believe he makes 24 of that 60 in the first two years. Has 3 years of 1m apiece tacked on to the end to lower the cap hit, which is akin to what the Devils got gigged for in the Kovalchuk deal.

He's not really a "goon" per se in the DJ King or Trevor Gillies way, but he will drop the gloves a lot (he just gets beat up a bunch). He's a pretty good forechecker and can chip in a little bit on offense. Good bottom six guy.

Yah as Mudo stated it's another one of those bs contracts that only the Devils get called out on bc they went even further. Still, why this is allowed along with the Luongo and others in say Detroit baffles me. It's not like Richards can't play that long, but it's highly unlikely that most players continue at that age. Yes there are a few but MOST do not as it is rare. His type role it can be done easier bc he sets people up versus beating people himself. An amazing player overall and I love the move for any team. Now how they use him is key, but Torts knows him well and I expect good things.

As for Chelios, he SUCKED so bad for years while hanging on. He was literally a coach out there and only had decent stats bc of the level of play the rest of the team was at. He and Foote played too long, and even Lidstrom sacrificed a ton on D this year to get the O stats up and it hurt the norms of the team in my mind. He won that Norris on name and age stats. Chara and Weber deserved it more, not to mention others in my mind. He's still unreal, but he's human now at 41.

Todays write up list 4 defencemen Dmitry Kulikov 20 - Keaton Ellerby 22 - roster players and Alexander Petrovic 19 recently signed last years draft- Erik Gudbranson 19 last years top pick and close to a contract. They say he is like a young Jovo.

Bc Kroenke is all about the NFL lockout and soccer, so he dumped Colorado on his son. Not to mention they are going cheap here right now as the money is flowing in the aforementioned teams of interest, so having an accountant/money man running shit is their focus. It's working, as they'll keep just at the salary floor and have got some top draft picks to boot. So infuriating to say the least.

However, this year they have a lot more experience and depth. Also two better GTs than last year even though it cost a ton to get Varly.

He got max out 925k, but didn't get the bonuses almost ALL top 10 picks get if they hit simple playing time in the NHL and more. Lou short ended the kid as they have done in the past in my mind, and if I was a top pick I wouldn't want to go there.

Larsson is "doing the right thing" I guess according to Lou, but man did he get taken. He stated (Larsson) he didn't want the bonus clauses bc nobody else on the team has them currently. Yes this is true, but they also don't have the top end of 925k forced on them and can negotiate more money. This kid got taken and I bet he'll get even later on when he's worth a ton and holds them to every cent or lose him.

Oh and you can't make an offer sheet to drive up the price. At that level you'd lose 4 first rounders if he took it, and at that point, I wouldn't blame TB for considering letting him walk. Also, if it doesn't work you lost a trading partner for years and SOOOOooo many GMs disrespect your tactics as happened to Edmonton a few years back. Little bit. They also traded Rolston to the Islanders for Hunter. I like Rolston, but he was making way too much money for what he was putting out on the ice.

This should help with getting Parise signed long term as well.

I posted the flyers jersey in the "ugly jersey" thread a couple of weeks ago and was told they were fake.

I don't think the Rangers jersey is ugly at all, (in fact, I would buy one) but I agree on the Flyers jersey.

I'm of two minds - I can see them being fakes but I just don't see Chinese knockoff manufacturers making up jerseys based on a fan concept. Especially since the Rangers jersey doesn't match the fan concept that was put up, and the stars on the arm bands match the New York Americans jersey.

I hope, for the Flyers' sake, that the jersey is a fake. Because that's just atrocious.

I don't get how pretty much everyone goes retro for these outdoor games and NOBODY seems to go with a modern jersey looking forward. I'm sure they'd still put out some ugly ones, but not having this constant turn back the clock approach would be a nice change.

Because the entire concept of the winter classic is old-school pond hockey and going back to your roots.

And with forward-looking jerseys, MLB tried that with turn ahead the clock night. It's a promotion that was never spoke of again.

What I'd like to see, but would never happen, is that every 3-5 years is that if an NHL team wants to re-do their alts, they throw up five designs and let the fans vote on them. They are the ones buying them. They should get a say.

I don't mean Tron or Future jerseys like that. I mean something new w/o the old school push. I get the fact it's called the "winter classic", I'm just sick of the same shit all the time with these games. I'd like to see a new third actually unveiled out there for the first time. As for the fan vote, only on all-star jerseys, bc I simply don't trust fans in any way with voting.

The guy worked for a car service in Dallas and got a call to pick up a family yesterday. It was to take Skrastins wife and kids to the airport so they can fly back to Russia. When the guy got to the house someone came out and told him not to mention anything about the crash because they haven't told the kids yet. 5 minutes later two little girls come skipping out of the house all happy that they are going to see their dad. The guy goes on to talk about how he almost broke down when he saw them and as soon as he dropped them off he just sat in his car and cried for like a half hour.

Man that's rough. Karlis was a real good guy on the Colorado team in the past too. Nothing but a class act and hard working D man who blocked anything near him. Ruslan too was one of those hard edged players, and a former team captain for the Belarus olympic team I believe. Just awful.

No, people like you went the righteous indignation route and inserted yourself into a situation you had NO part in whatsoever. He passed on a sad day and his involvement in it as most do in a blog/mboard. Why is it in bad taste to talk about what happened in his life and how it affected him? Why is it this story shouldn't be told if the guy wants to tell it? Isn't that what blogging is? Telling your story day to day, week to week? If something so touching and real is off limits, just stop blogs all together bc what you ate last night is NOT interesting.

It happened, he passed it on. You think he's profiting/profited in any way on this? You think it's such a terrible thing to show the rougher side of life bc it's from an outside view. It's not like he's telling some inside secret that the family was grieving. It's far from salacious, opportunistic or exploitive at best. But what did the guy get from this outside of attention from assholes like you who like to get on their pulpit and preach due to inadequacies in their own life. Yes, I think you try so hard here to prove each day you're the better person so much bc you simply aren't. The sad thing is, there are MANY like you. Just like your whole stand on jokes bt friends about kids, yet you BLOGGED in the past about hating autistic or mentally challenged kids.

I'm not trying to go at you either Matt, I just don't get this OUTRAGE in this matter. You follow the same pattern of late in these type situations and I think it truly is for a reason. You're a dad now I get it. However, I'm not buying this holier than thou approach you have of late. In fact, I think it's a complete farce.

Funny, my team got beat 3-0 but I truly like the new look. What amounted to a very emotional night, with the Forsberg number retirement and the Belak, Skastins and Salei memorials, it was draining. I still can't believe all those guys around my age are gone in that crash.

Still, the size and mean quality of this new team is something I'm really big on now. The new goalie in net looks really strong, but surely needs to rely more on position vs athletic ability. At times he's way too loud and not economical. I'm sure Giguere will be a HUGE help in this area, and may very well take the lead at times bc 34 is not done by any means, just look at Roloson.

The area I wasn't impressed was the coaching. Sacco again was outmatched and made little to no adjustments. If any, the adjustments he made were the wrong ones. Add in his idiotic pulling of the goalie in a 2-0 game with some momentum and 3 minutes left, and you have a guy doing things just to seem as though he's involved.

Also, the refs made some pathetic calls in the game and it did have an impact on the game. Ints all over the ice but they looked past actual charging and hooking penalties all over. It might not be the difference, but it scares me as the NHL moves more and more into this phantom NFL holding call territory to control everything they want. It's even more suspect when the Avs DID finally get calls, when the other team was on a PP, or once the game was well in hand the other way or at least close.

Talk about prophetic, saying the Avs were on the right track and looked good even after a 3-0 loss to open the season. Only a mere week later, and 4 games into a 5 game road trip and the Avs found completely different ways to win them all! The revamped D is pretty fucking mean and I have to say this O'Brien guy has done NOTHING but impress me with his tenacity. Hedja and EJ have been solid, but man O'Brien, Ladeskog and O'Reilly are surely the most impressive debuts thus far for the team.

O'Reilly truly started to become a force toward the end of last year when they had all the injuries which moved him up in the lineup with little help. Gabriel Ladeskog is only fucking 18 and man handles vets out there, hitting everything near a puck and is so tough to knock off it. He is already showing great leadership out there as well, something you just don't see at 18, but the team is young and that opens this up more than normal for a kid to fill that type role. However, this is something many have listed as a huge plus for the kid almost every scout said would jump right into the NHL and contribute in a big way even at 18. He's done just that, on the ice and in the locker room.

Fuck you Rhah! We do NOT need another bloody vag fan on this site. Might I suggest a late night drive through that awesome town? Seriously, Detroit is just plain awful.

After a HUGE 5 for 5 road trip, I'm not liking this 2 games in 8 days bullshit to cool the team off.

I wish they had a better scheduler in the NHL bc a week of games with back to backs leads into a week plus with only two games. It just seems silly.

Go Avs. 5 for 5 on the road trip. It's amazing what a little goaltending does for a team.

Don't forget a defense that actually plays defense and had size!

Isn't it nice to see this team tough again too? It's been so fucking long since they had an O'Brien type player on the back line, as he seems offended by everything the other team does near his net or in his zone and I love it. He's a mean fucking prick and you need those guys. I thought he was going to rip Dion Phaneuf's head off last night.

I was hoping he would beat the shit out of Phaneuf. The defense is really big and scoring some points too. Jan Hejda is looking like a solid signing so far. They got off to a great start last year too, until the injuries hit in December and it was all down hill. But I'm keeping positive.

Last year they had an AHL team out there toward the end. HUGE guys went down too, like Mueller, Fleishman, Stewart and so many more. Also, they played in front of three pretty AFWUL goalies last season. This year they have two guys better than anything we had in years outside of Anderson's anomaly year when motivated for a starting gig/long-term contract and before his breakdown. So much went into last year, but if you look at the lineup in the last 30 games or so, there is about a 50% turnover ratio and that's a good thing.

Any idea what is up with Mueller by the way. Everywhere and everything I've heard reported it as undisclosed injury. That scares me in a big way.

not only was it the first time they all played together, they also sat through a long jersey retirement ceremony and player tributes to those that passed and it couldn't have helped

They were saying on Friday broadcast that Wings know they are going to get screwed later in season for having such huge time between games early in season (they had like 6 days between games, last Saturday, then the game Friday night).

I think later in season they have like 23 games in 25 days, not to mention they have to travel to west coast so much (I am sure they have west coast games in those 23 games).

Stop. Your bs is non-stop huh? The discussion is all based on PRONGER now getting injured, and he certainly does fight and scrap all fucking day. You tied in one freak accident for a gritty face-off specialist as if that proves the odds are so fucking high everyone should now wear visors or are insane. Over the course of the league the injuries to the face and eye are pretty much the same as in the past, regardless of your take on the sport being "faster and bigger".

Not to mention, as someone else pointed out, anything short of a full cage would do nothing to prevent Pronger's injury. You ready to require full cages and take more of the physical play out of the game too while we're at it? I'm already sick of seeing nice hits being called in the NHL of late.

I ask you this...if the players didn't all go with visors after the Bryan Berard eye injury, what makes you think Malhotra's injury would scare hockey players throughout the league into wearing visors?

Should every goalie have to wear a neck guard bc of the freak clint malarchuk injury. Shit, just make everyone wear one bc we all must never forget the Zednik injury too right?

But yah you're right, let's just deflect and act as if you were speaking of Manny Malhotra type players only when you made your comment, not the SPECIFIC player, Pronger, in question and the answer I gave you for why he doesn't chose to wear a visor. I'm sure there are other reasons as well (vision, comfort, fogging, reflections...), but I gave you a concrete answer to your stupid fucking point/question.

I'll also take the direction of your boy Revis for a second, only this time it actually applies bc there are in-game implications outside of simply viewing a play as any fan can. Did you ever play a second of ice hockey in your life, much less play both with and without a visor? I ask this completely in a serious manner, I'd like to know if the wizard of the visor has any feel for the on-ice play of the sport outside of his fear of injury in a sport dominated by some of the toughest athletes out there.

Compared to other sections of Newark you're absolutely right. That area, since all they do is try to build it up, isn't that bad. At the same time if you don't want to pay for parking and park a few blocks away it can make you a little uneasy when you're walking back to your car. That's why goalies have a crease.

that is the dumbest argument ever against hitting a goalie.

If you're gonna come out to play the puck like that you should expect to be checked.

no you shouldn't you don't hit the goalie. lucic made no attempt to avoid the hit, if he had, i wouldn't care. shit happens like that, but lucic knew exactly what he was doing.

if it was reversed and it was kaleta taking out thomas, boston would be bitching about the same thing.

i actually agree that he shouldn't get a suspension, he got a penalty, which he should've. but you still don't hit the goalie. and the sabres a bunch of pussies.

from mike harrington of buffalo news on no suspension:

So the message is clear: If your goalie is hit, take care of it yourselves. The Sabres should have done that Saturday. They'll meet the Bruins again Nov. 23. That should be interesting.

exactly.

I agree there.

Why shouldn't he get hit if he is out of the crease? Should he then be allowed to go the entire length of the ice and shoot without being touched?

Lets not make pussy goalie rules like they did with QBs.

Its open season on any player out of the crease.

goalies can't cross the blue line unless going to their own bench.

Its open season on any player out of the crease.

goalie equipment isn't designed to be take checks, but to stop pucks. as evidenced by miller's helmet popping off as soon as he was hit.

you'd be singing a much different tune if this was king henrik.

goalies are not "fair game"

sorry, you play the puck and aren't allowed to check a goalie, it's that simple

he can play the puck, just as the skater can, but it's clear when someone is just trying to get a shot in

buf really should have took that guy out, but for shannahan to say no intent is clearly wrong. do they know who did this and actually watch the vid?

not to mention watch how many suspensions come the next time it happens or when buf runs thomas (and it will/better happen now) and all hell breaks out. be careful what you ask for, bc hockey players will take this as a sign they need to take care of it and will. it's going to be ugly and the nhl will act like it had nothing to do with it and will condemn the resulting actions bet on it.

goalies are not "fair game"

If you want a ton of top level goalies blowing out knees and rupturing their acls/mcls, just allowing them to be run like that. In fact, isn't Miller having concussion issues now based on the hit? Their equipment just isn't made for it, but I guess players should be able to stick check the goalie now too right? Or lift his stick with theirs when planted in front?

They already took away the puck handling ability in the corners for those gts with puck skills, and I get some of that in both directions. However, saying a goalie should stay in his crease or get hit is stupid. Where is the line drawn too Kev? bc goalies are rightfully at the top of their crease all the time on pt shots

Lucic has "50 pounds on me and he runs me like that? It's unbelievable," Miller said. "Everyone in this city sees him as a big tough solid player. I respected him for how hard he played. That was gutless."
Lucic told the Boston Globe: "I just put my head down and tried to get to it first. Next thing I looked up, he's out of his net and it was a collision. Going into a situation like that, I'm going to brace myself. I was going full speed. So it's pretty hard for me to put on the brakes."
Lucic received a minor penalty for charging on the play.
According to NHL rules on goaltender interference: "A goalkeeper is not 'fair game' just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact."

Completely contrived and made up bullshit on Lucic's part. He pretty much gave Shanny what he wanted to hear, but clearly saw Miller the whole way bc he basically pushed the puck to him with his awful stone hands on the play. The guy is always involved in this type game and just decided not to pass up a chance to lay a shot on Miller.

Hejduk was finally named the Captain (3rd ever) of the Colorado Avalanche.

I knew it was coming as a diversion tactic bc the Avs are playing pretty bad of late and this is Sacco and Sherman's m.o.

Yet, he deserves it and they need leadership. My guess is it'll be Milan for 2 years max and Landeskog or O'Reilly named captain for the long haul. Both will be among the leadership in my mind or they're making a mistake. Duchene and Staz are nice players, but not great leaders in my mind. Also, I never agreed with the EJ (Erik Johnson) trade bunnies (fell in love just bc of his draft position and "potential"/mouth) that he'd be the sure C. To me, I'd rather Quincey or even better, O'Brien as the leadership on the back line. Hejda to me has been the biggest letdown overall.

Late to the convo, the crease can't be totally the rule, but being behind the net playing the puck versus 15 feet out of the net at the circle are two hugely different things. Your goalie is that far out, he is getting hit, period. And guy barely lowered his shoulder, he basically just knocked a little gnat out of his way.

spoon
11-15-2011, 10:07 AM
rhah, he saw him the whole way and didn't have to lower the shoulder when you are that much bigger, in different pads set up for hitting and a TON bigger/expecting the hit (being he was trying to do it and Miller expected the norm)

sorry, your rundown is crazy

i would LOVE to run some goalies in my leagues, especially the other night, but they easily would/could get hurt and it's simply not part of the game

they are allowed to play the puck in front of the net, Miller in fact did so and got there first easily, so Lucic laid him out pissed off his rock hands screwed a nice chance at a breakaway

Yeah I guess you are right. I thought the rules were really more in and around the crease and didn't protect goalies as much outside, but from what I read of the rules after investigating this more, I am wrong. So Miller really is just not expecting any contact at all....

However, his attempt to kill Lucic with a two handed bastard sword goalie stick swipe is uncalled for.

Miller should have just done this:
