Watching the pregame for the Devils-Maple Leaf game. Seeing Lemaire give an interview was comforting.

But onto the game. I can watch the Devils or the Giants. Which level of suck do I want to subject myself to tonight?

Islanders beat the Canadiens tonight 4-1.

10 points in the first seven games

Then they lose 20 out of the next 21

When Capuano came on board, he said he needed to simplify the game plan. He insinuated that Gorden's plan was too complicated. When describing the new, simplified game plan, he even used the hated phrase "neutral zone trap". I thought there was no way this could work. Just boring hockey with no offense.

Now they've gone 4-0-1 in the last five games.

Still near the bottom in every meaningful team stat (28th in goals, 28th in goals against, 27th in the power play, and 16th in penalty killing), but still...

I take this shit personally. They're just fucking with my heart.

Don't get me wrong...they suck and there's no way they make the playoffs. But these winning streaks suck me in all over again.

Not really that hard to do since it's in Glendale, not Phoenix, and part of a Philly like sports complex right next to the Cardinal's stadium as well. Middle of nowhere or in a huge complex?

Not really that hard to do since it's in Glendale, not Phoenix, and part of a Philly like sports complex right next to the Cardinal's stadium as well. Middle of nowhere or in a huge complex?

1) Glendale is part of the Phoenix metro. There's really no separation between the major areas of the metro (Mesa/Tempe/Scottsdale/Phoenix/Chandler/Glendale), it's all one big urban blob.

I was using Phoenix in general because people who aren't local really have no idea what Glendale is.

2) There is a complex, not Philly-like because they haven't built it yet in Philly, unless you just mean the stadiums and not the entertainment complex. It's basically U of P Stadium, the Arena, and the Westgate entertainment complex, which is similar to what they are building in Philly on the site where the Spectrum husk currently is.

The biggest knock on where the Coyotes play is that they are in the middle of nowhere. I am currently staying in Mesa, where most of the people and money are in Phoenix outside of Scottsdale, and it takes an hour WITHOUT TRAFFIC to get to the stadium. There is no public transportation, and the light rail that is currently running in PHX will take YEARS to get up to Glendale.

Traffic on the 10 to get up to the arena is ridiculously bad. I had to re-route on my GPS 4 times to get around it.

Long story short, the former owner of the Coyotes made a ri-fucking-diculous decision to build the stadium up there, and the stadium would have been much better served to be built up in North Scottsdale.

OK this is crazy.

Ovechkin's Career Stats:

NHL 435/GP 283/G 288/A 571/Pts +75 93/PPG 129/PPA 4/SHG 0/SHA 45/GWG 334/PIMS 2333/Shots 12.13/S% 311/Hits (Stat kept since 09-10 season) 28/Blocked Shots (Stat kept since 09-10 season)

Crosby's Career Stats:

NHL 410/GP 215/G 356/A 571/Pts +65 65/PPG 163/PPA 3/SHG 5/SHA 25/GWG 385/PIMS 1391/Shots 15.5/S% 93/Hits (Stat kept since 09-10 season) 64/Blocked Shots (Stat kept since 09-10 season)

So they meet with exactly 571 points each 5 years and 3 months after both started their NHL careers. Sid surely has the advantage in terms of hardware (Stanley Cup, Gold Medal & Messier Award vs Calder Cup), but their careers are hardly even started. Both have awards such as the Art Ross, Rocket Richard, Lester B. Pearson/Ted Lindsay, Hart Trophy and of course All-Star and Rookie first team selections.

However, it's amazing that at 23 Crosby already has a Stanley Cup, Gold Medal, Hart , Art Ross, Rockey Richard, and Pearson/Lidsay awards at least once. Between what these two are doing/have already done, and what 20 year old Stamkos is capable of, the NHL has some legendary talent in the ranks right now offensively. Poor goalies.

I was just out there last year and we had little trouble getting there from the Westin Kierland in Scottsdale via car and I hardly know the lay of the land. So I'm not about to argue the location of the arena right now with little local knowledge, but I liked the feel of the arena, the shitload of available parking for it and anything within the complex area and the access to it. Yet it was a one time deal.

Where you were, accessing the stadium is a straight ride on the 101 loop.

Don't get me wrong - the Arena, the entertainment complex, and the parking is PHENOMENAL. It's wonderful. I love it there.

The problem is, for most people who live in the area, the actual physical location of the stadium is far from ideal. I was actually in town when they announced the Glendale deal, and everyone screamed how much it sucked. (At the time, they were playing at America West which is right in downtown Phoenix, but it wasn't a good hockey arena).

The lockout and the remote location is what is helping kill hockey in the Valley. I hope the new owner can change some things.

Not at all.

America West (where the Suns play and where the Coyotes USED to play) is right in the same area where the Bob (Chase Field) is.

It's 18 miles from Chase Field to Jobing.com Arena, with a long stretch of 10 separating the sites, where all the traffic amasses. It's at least 30 minutes to get there without traffic.

You can't walk there, there's no public transportation, and there's nothing to do around there except for Westgate. As I said: Remote.

And Spoon - there's no real "nightlife" in Phoenix. Most of the entertainment district is in Tempe.

Met a shitload of players that night on the deck and talked sports with Tori Hunter for about a half hour. Scottsdale and Tempe. Most of the college-kid entertainment is in Tempe, most of the post-college upscale nightlife is in Scottsdale. Phoenix "proper" has nothing. Glendale is somewhere you don't want to be after dark.

I should have said with the exception of age, but he is the best conditioned player on the team, he has never had injury issues, he is still as fast as he ever was and he didn't see real regular ice time until he was 25. All reason I had zero issue with them extending him before the season.

My advise is shoot when in doubt and run that net. It's going to be all ugly goals unless someone just falls on d and opens up a lane. It's really getting tough to move the puck with precision out there, not to mention keep your speed up.

I've played in both outdoor conditions and they have different effects on the ice depending on how cold it is out there and the temp change over time. Mind you, we didn't have the cooling system under our ice or the Zamboni to clean it after each 20 minutes of play.

Yeah, the Lightning farm is pretty bereft of defensive talent to begin with. Wishart is a physical specimen but is supposedly a bit of a knucklehead. If he develops it could look bad. Unless the trade works, in which case I can live with it. My point is, I'm torn. We just needed reliable goaltending so badly.

EVEN if he doesn't become a top 4 d man, it's too much. He's 41...41! You better be getting something else of need in this move. TB is NOT getting by the Flyers, Caps, Pens, Boston & Mont bc of Roloson at 41. Their issue is 3-fold...1) Bad goal tending (somewhat tackled) 2) Bad Defense (still GLARING and more in the future now too) 3) Offensive minded team overall

I know this bc I've watched them often and see many similarities between them and my team the Avalanche. They both give up a ton on the PP (shorties against) with their all out approach, they both have o minded d men who aren't so solid in their own end (even worse with the Hunwick trade in Colorado :wallbash:). I think it's a whole lot to pay for a guy at that age. I would have found a younger guy out there available or at least possibly. Heck, bt LA and Nashville there about 6 damn good prospects dying on the vine waiting right now for their shot. I'd be more apt for that LONG TERM move and add to the package for the guy. However, TB hasn't been able to find their man and has spent a lot doing so (cash, picks and players) since their Cup with Nikolai Khabibulin. Who by the way is only 38 and would have cost you a cup of coffee to get from Edmonton right now. Of course he's not playing that well right now and showing his age more.

Nabokov's done with the K. He would be a good addition. Problem is, I don't think he's going to pass through enough teams in waivers.

Done? Can you elaborate?

Exactly. I don't think they expect there would be any way he would go unclaimed. Speaking of waivers, anybody want Mike Smith?

Because of "family circumstances" on December 13, 2010 his contract with SKA St. Petersburg was terminated by mutual consent.

Coming from Europe, he'd have to be placed on waivers by the Lightning. So they could either screw themselves by signing him to an unattractive contract that no one else would want to touch, or more than likely have another team claim him.

I thought they had a new ruling with the KHL on free agents and respect for contracts in either league from here on in?

Can we proof this either way?

Ooooo, lookie what I found!

This may explain A LOT!

The Lightning have spoken with Don Meehan about Nabokov, per Nick Kypreos.

The interesting thing about this situation is that Nabokov would have to clear waivers in order to play in the NHL since he played in the KHL this season. This is similar to when the Islanders signed Wade Dubielewicz after playing for Kazan Ak-Bars in the KHL, and had him claimed off of waivers by Columbus. On the flip side, Peter Forsberg was able to bypass the waivers scenario a couple of years ago when he came back to the Avalanche because he hadn't officially played in Europe that season.

Assuming Nabokov does sign in the NHL, does anybody actually think he clears waivers? I don't. There are quite a few teams who could use a quality goaltender for various reasons.

Since people are all about loopholes and figuring out how to beat the system, I've seen some people suggest that the Lightning work with the Islanders and get them to claim him and then send him back to the Lightning for a later round pick. It might sound like a decent plan on paper, except for the fact that before a player claimed on waivers can be traded he must first be offered to any other teams that put in an unsuccessful waiver claim on him for free.

Mind you, it's from a poster at hockeyforum (Vice/moderator there but usually pretty solid on info).

I just know that when Svatos came back from the K just now, he had to clear waivers.

On December 28, 2010, Svatos returned to North America with NHL ambitions and signed a one-year, two way contract with the St. Louis Blues.[8] However in order to return to the NHL, Svatos was placed on waivers due to starting the season in Europe and the following day on December 29, was subsequently claimed by the Nashville Predators.[9] On December 31, 2010, Svatos dressed for the Predators to make his 2010–11 NHL season debut in an away game win over the Minnesota Wild.[10]

From Puck the Media:

According to TV By The Numbers, the Winter Classic won the night in the coveted 18-49 demo with 4.56 million total viewers. CBS and Fox had more viewers, but among younger demos, NBC was the winner with a 1.8 rating and a 5 share.

With the game being postponed just the day before and scheduled for primetime, there’s no doubt that the ratings were helped by having just one college football bowl game opposite (the boring Fiesta Bowl) rather than four had the Winter Classic been played as scheduled at 1 p.m Eastern.

Probably not on the Heritage Classic outside of the package. The NHL REALLY sucks marketing it's sport and getting good slots/time on national tv. Hockey DAY in the US! Really!? WTF?! I thought the winter classic was the big day! Fuck if they'd ever get a weekly great matchup in prime time on Thursday nights on ESPN or another big network throughout the year. I know the networks probably wouldn't sacrifice that big of a slot, but the NHL needs to find someone willing to get it done.

Roloson changes the game over there. They've given up the fewest shots in the league (27.5 a game), and are 5th worst in GA/G (3.00). That tells me their goaltending has been beyond shitty. Until last night they were the only team currently in the East playoff picture with a negative goal differential (they're now even).

According to Friedman, they chose Roloson over Nabokov because they were (justifiably) afraid they'd lose him on waivers, like St. Louis did with Svatos.

spoon
01-05-2011, 03:40 AM
Well the thing is they could have tried it first and then fallen back on this idea before the deadline. Also, I don't buy shots on goal without actually getting to see a team a few times. Take the avs last year for example, they allowed tons of shots due to their style and where they'd force the shots. It not only worked, anderson's stats looked better than they should of bc of it. Now they are younger and smaller on d and allowing less shots. The only problem is they are from good scoring position on the ice and hence our goals against is way up.

Point is, it's not always a direct tie in either direction.

spoon
01-05-2011, 03:44 AM
Also, while I like and respect rolo he simply can't have another edmontonesque run in him. He'll be a good upgrade for now, but he's 41 and will tire later in the year and surely trying to make a long playoff run. Better use that kid A LOT if u want him to keep fresh. With that offense, they'd b stupid not to.

Langenbrunner to Dallas is done.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
DAL-NJD deal isn't quite official yet, assuming that just means the trade call has to be completed. Should be done shortly.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
I am hearing NJD are getting a third-round pick for Langenbrunner from DAL, but there may be some conditional elements to it as well.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
Nothing official yet, and if that changes I will let you know, but signs point to Langenbrunner returning to DAL. But deal is not yet done.

According to Lebrun, it's for a conditional third round pick

One conditional 3rd rounder is more what I expected, not two in that area as the claim was for Philly's offer. Not to mention it's much less likely to net that type bounty from a conf/division rival.

To me it's time to feel out all your system and get a feel for who can come in and play some key minutes, those that have a future role and those who have some trade value. You'll lose plenty in the process, but that just means you get a good rundown on your players at both the NHL/AHL level and perhaps more once college and juniors end. Also it means a pretty high draft pick for once, oh wait, Atlanta gets that too! Oof. Man did Atlanta get a lot in that fucking trade, and they don't even want Bergfors any longer. How much can one guy cost an organization, bc right now losing that pick only makes it worse!

Every season the season ticket holders for the Devils get to do a VIP skate with the Devils thing. They've been doing it for as long as I can remember, I even went in like 1993 when my family had season tickets. One night during the season on an off night the players and season ticket holders get to skate on the Prudential Center Ice and the practice arena ice. You just kind of hang out and talk to the players, take pictures and get stuff signed. Its actually really cool. One of my best friends works for the NHL and at about 5pm yesterday he got his hands on some extra VIP passes for the event so we went.

I know it happened just the other night, but really, how often does an NHL team have to put their starter back in once they've pulled him?? :wallbash:

Isles get off to a great start, have a 20-plus game losing streak, then have a decent little winning streak, and now are 0-1-2 in their last three games. Loving the Islanders is like loving a recovering addict. You live in constant fear of the relapse.

I'm pretty sure the devs were offensive light in a big way and the reason (plus what they already gave up to get him) they went so hard at Kovalchuk. They were the worst scoring team in the playoffs and bottom half in the NHL in the regular season. Not sure they have ever been top tier O in the league ever.

hahaha! did he at least deserve it?

My team's goalie once got run and immediately puked all over as he tried to get his mask off but it was too late. The puke was red and he got hit pretty hard so we were worried but it ended up he was on the verge the whole game and never said anything. He ate a shitload of pasta (he's another fat fuck goalie :innocent:) to close to game time and it was fucking disgusting. He ended up running off the ice and finished up his puking in a garbage can while the refs had to clean the shit up!

We went from thinking he was in trouble to laughing our asses off about it. He went back in net with puke on the inside of his mask and smelled worse than normal. I'm pretty sure it helped his GAA bc nobody went hard to the net again bc he purposely (directional/not the action) puked ON the guy who ran him by the way!

Jordan Panasiuk's remarkable streak of eight consecutive shutouts was put on hold over the weekend due to bus trouble. The Fort St. John Huskies had bus problems and as a result their North West Junior Hockey League game against Panasiuk and the first-place Whitecourt Wolverines was postponed.

Whitecourt is 180 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. The 19-year-old Panasiuk has gone 15-0-0 this season and has a sensational .968 save percentage. He has made 173 consecutive saves and has not surrendered a goal in 494 minutes 12 seconds of action, dating back to Nov. 7.

Oh shit, that would do it. We had a guy simply spit (no blood) on our guy as he was leaving the ice bc of a game misconduct (albeit he did lay a guy out, but there was a side story to it...meaning it was payback). The guy basically spit on him in the face on the way by and of course this led to mayhem. First the Avs lose Stewart for over a month bc he broke his hand rearranging someone's face, now they go about trading a solid early round defensive prospect for a struggling d man with a decent salary from a cap strapped Bruin team with Savard coming back soon?!?! WTF Sherman? I can see moving someone like Cumiskey or someone like Wilson, both paid very little and fits the Bruin's need at this point. However, moving a guy like Cohen to a team with little wiggle room for a 7th rounder clearly struggling in his own end and not living up to his perceived strength moving the puck and joining the rush simply doesn't make sense.

While I hope the up tempo game in Colorado, where the D is encouraged to join the rush at almost all times will help him, I simply don't see that the Avs needed give up such a huge prospect due to their situation and Hunwick's trade value. Julian's system surely doesn't fit the 25 year old d man, but to me Boston won this trade in a big way. It may not show this year as Hunwick is clearly more NHL ready and 21 year old Cohen had only a brief few games up with the Avs this year despite many injuries on their blue line.

The future for this 6'2" 200+ physical defender with a power play qb ability and huge RIGHT-handed shot from the point will surely be a huge gain down the road for the fans in Boston. Hell, he's already a hero due to his game-winning NCAA championship goal in BU two years ago. Enjoy Cohen you massholes! I know I was eagerly awaiting his arrival with the Avs until now.

:glurps::wallbash::down::wallbash::down::glurps:

I'd have to say the trade is surely a win for the B's now without Cohen even playing in Boston yet. Not only did they dump salary and a shitty d man, they also have a shot (a good one in my mind) at a cheap tough d man coming up very soon.

Your team made some unfortunate trades this year.

The Fleisch trade was a no brainer or win/win for both to be honest. It made sense to trade Hannan bc we have a plethora of D men needing room and he's on the last year of his contract. He wasn't going to be picked up again. To me, I would have much rather of traded many others, but he was going at year's end.

Fleisch was expendable on the Caps due to their amazing depth on the wing and he simply wasn't holding on a top two line bc of it. On the Avs, he fit very well and was immediately on a top line with Duchene which clicked in a big way. Perfect trade to be honest, but Hannan is surely less the injury risk. I wasn't mad when it happened, and I'm still not now.

The Cohen Hunwick trade however, what a fucking mess since day one. God I hope he gets moved asap as part of a package with Cumiskey for a team needing fast puck-moving d. Both SUCK on D, but their skating make some look past it. Not me, hate them both until they learn to play their own fucking positions. Perhaps a move to wing for both, even if they BOTH can't finish either. Not sure how the B's got a recent early round pick for 7th round garbage? Aboooo!

I'd almost rather him go elsewhere for one last shot, but he's always welcome in Colorado regardless. One of the best players I EVER saw play. In his prime he could change a game every time he hit the ice. Whether it was a hit, pass or shot, the guy was unreal. Damn those ankles for being his Achilles heal bc his numbers are still amazing right now, imagine if he kept playing.

Also, he only will cost money and Colorado won't have to move anyone to land him. Hell, he won't even count against the cap if he can't go later (always a huge possibility at this point) so if he wants to sign, it's a no brainer. Low risk, HIGH reward. Yet this last Olympic year he looked timid, weak and skated very slow. I'm pretty sure it's the only way he makes it through a decent amount of games at this point. So he probably won't be that big an impact overall, unless he goes harder and then he's at risk to being knocked out quick in my mind.

Things simply aren't working out for the Avs this year. Sherman's Cohen trade looks even more ridiculous being that it wasn't smart or necessary. Could they have made a run if Anderson was playing like last year, sure. However he wasn't and this team simply isn't ready at this point. I'd love another playoff team, but it's going to be tough as the West is all bunched up. It's going to take a great coaching job at this point to get them there in my mind bc the Avs have a TON of injuries. Before Fleish went down they lost the 3rd most man games to injury. I'm sure losing the rest of the season with Fleish means they took over the top spot or will.

Meuller - Still out (concussion, 2nd in less then 6 months)
Fleish - Out for Season (2 pulmonary blood clots)
Quincey - Out for Season (sep shoulder/surgery)
O'Reilly - Out a few weeks (shoulder)

Just got Stewart, Gali, Cumiskey, McLeod and Shattenkirk back from injuries.

Only two guys on the team played every game so far this year, Liles & Duchene. Not surprisingly, they are the team's leaders on both sides of the puck.

Always really liked Liles.

And it's fun to watch the Devils again.

Please don't jinx them, they're still like 21 points out of a playoff spot

Isles are 3-6-1 in their last ten. Devils are 6-3-1.

Fear not boys, after tonight there may be a tie for worst record in the league. :wallbash:

The Isles and Devils are headed in opposite directions. But at least I made it to the all-star break this year before totaly giving up. That's better than most years.

huh?

It's the draft of the all-star players as made by the captains like backyard pickup games.

Everyone at this game is pretty well known by anyone who follows the sport. Yandle is another possibility.

Yah, the announcer was kind of a douche bc all his lines were awful and fell flat minus clear stats. This would be something perfect for a guy like Jay Mohr, bc he'd rile the guys a ton and seems to know or at least does his homework with hockey. They missed a chance to make this hilarious too.

As for the teams, both are ridiculous but it's not a normal game so Team Staal's team is all offense and has all the Hurricanes so you know it's now a home came for them. Love the new setup overall, but it can use a tweak here and there. Kudos to the NHL on taking a shot on something new here and actually creating some interesting story lines for any all-star game.

I get paid a sizable salary for rooting for good teams.....

I'm down here because one of my best friends works for the NHL, so he comped me a room and tix for the weekend (he also was the reason why I got to hang with the Cup last night).

I work in education as a behavior consultant for a school district in northern Jersey, sadly that has no relation to getting me perks with the NHL
