This is easily Fleury's best year in net by far. He's not just the Grant Fuhr type holding down the fort behind a HUGE offense this year. He's the reason they are winning quite a few games so far.

Yup. They dump Fisher's contract, get a first round pick (and a conditional pick), and I bet they start moving everyone not nailed down. Phillips is being mentioned in a ton of rumors, and there's some talk (although I don't believe it) that Pittsburgh's trying to pick up Kovalev again.

Here's all of that fight. You knew the Isles would get burned overall as it was retaliation and they were playing the Pens. Definitely a charge there at the end that sparked the big fight. A flying elbow charge by Gilles to be exact. Looks like Haley found himself a role on the Islander team now too. Can't blame Godard too much for stopping a player from fighting his goalie just be he beat their goalie's ass a week earlier. He shouldn't have got that big a suspension, but it is a pretty clear rule he broke. I'm sure the Pitt players respect him for it, not to mention the coaches. Johnson can protect himself though it seems, but the dif in pads and a player's is huge and just not a fair starting point.

Oh and my take on the Martin punch is that it was complete garbage. It looked very close to the punch by Bertuzzi on Steve Moore. The only difference is that Moore had already fought a few times in the game and Talbot didn't. Some would say the code says he has to fight based on the actions of the last game, but if you look at what the Islanders are all pissy about is complete bullshit. He barely touched their goalie while trying to make a play on a puck behind the net.

For anyone who has played, the goalies get away with a TON behind the net while forwards aren't supposed to touch them. They'll stick you, interfere, stick their legs out and pretty much get a shot in any way they can while making a play on the puck. I'm not saying it's really that bad, but it is hilarious that they took so much issue with it. Me thinks it has a lot more to do with their WILLING goalie getting fucking knocked out in a fight and they were embarrassed.

To me it's this righteous outrage that really cracks me up. The same shit happened in the Moore incident where Crawford, May, Cooke and Bertuzzi all said a lowly 3rd/4th winger has no right laying a CLEAN fucking hit on Naslund. It just so happened he got a little dinged up on the hit so they went after Moore over and over and over. He actually fought many times after the hit and the main problem was he kept winning or at worst got a draw. That clearly wasn't enough for those assholes and the kid never played another hockey game since at any level.

Which is why I think they'll flip Anderson immediately. He'd be really attractive for a team that's thin on goaltending and wants to beef up for the playoffs (like the Flyers). Problem is, they just dealt a first and a third to the Leafs for Versteeg, so they'd probably have to send an NHL player back.

Anderson missed some time for "personal reasons" which I think had tons to do with this move. To me it's a change of scenery type move for both. Neither were staying on board with their teams, so why not make the move. Oh and Philly would be smart NOT to pick up Anderson. He'd only bring down their gt play. He took about 20 steps back this year, looks out of shape, has no intensity and simply played terrible positionally and technically since game one of the season.

I never went to a game at the old place, but what I don't like about Giant Center is how narrow all the seats are in the cheap section. And I don't get it. The thing is less than 10 years old, and Pennsylvania isn't known for having too many um...."narrow" people. 25-30% of the crowd has to stand during the game because they literally can't fit in the seats.

I read somewhere that they may make a run at Bryzgalov in free agency in the offseason. If they do, i hope its only a stop gap until Pickard is ready.

I never went to a game at the old place, but what I don't like about Giant Center is how narrow all the seats are in the cheap section. And I don't get it. The thing is less than 10 years old, and Pennsylvania isn't known for having too many um...."narrow" people. 25-30% of the crowd has to stand during the game because they literally can't fit in the seats.

pure cookie cutter arena, hate it

To me, the Avs got the most valuable player (Johnson) but the blues got more overall (both Av players blue chip and young). So much for that Devils run.

That's the problem with that HUGE hole the Devs dug, one loss combined with the bottom two teams you're chasing almost crushes everything overnight. It's not a done deal just yet, but to lose a game by ONE goal against a very good playoff team and it hurt so much...well, that sucks.

Now you're down 11 and 14 pts to the two teams your chasing bc both won tonight. Sure the Devs have a game in hand vs the Canes, and Staal may miss some time now, but can they really make up all that ground with so little margin of error? If it happens it will be incredible. However, to me the only thing they accomplished in all this is now they won't move some shitty vets (unless tonight changes something Lou's mind) and probably lost a top 5 pick and more. It does show just how important coaching is in the NHL though as well.

Steckel's good at winning faceoffs, a below average penalty killer, doesn't skate very well and brings nothing offensively (http://www.japersrink.com/2010/8/13/1621011/why-the-caps-should-and-could-be). Other than that, he's great. (http://www.japersrink.com/2010/6/8/1507050/2009-10-rink-wrap-david-steckel)

Of course, the Devils gave up a guy on an expiring deal who probably wasn't coming back, and got a second round pick in 2012. So that's kind of good.

So what you're saying is that the devils made the best trade in the history of trades?

What I don't understand are all these people going around acting like the Caps got fleeced in the deal. They gave up an overpriced spare part and a draft pick and filled a need at 2C. And the second round pick isn't even till 2012.

It's going to hurt the Devs, because with this deal they're already capped out and have around only 7 million available for next season, and Steckel makes over a million the next two years. And they still have to sign Parise. If most NHL GMs weren't averse to the Offer Sheet, I'd bet Parise would get Sheet'd in a heartbeat.

Yah, Elliot just had his first good game in Colorado last night while Anderson is lighting it up. As stated above, Colorado/Sherman offered him a very good contract which he turned down. After that, something happened inside that went REALLY sour as he was a scratch for personal reasons and actually wasn't with the team for a while.

My problem with it all is how it ended and his value getting artificially lowered. Elliot is nothing more than a stopgap at best and probably a backup of the future. Budaj needs to go and I don't really like the lot of free agents out there next year unless I'm missing someone. If there was ever a place to sign up a RFA of interest, it would however be at that position. It goes against the current philosophy of the Avs at this point (losing the draft picks), but man do they need a starter to fill the void for a few years (1-3) pending on how Calvin Pickard, Sami Aittokallio and others develop.

It makes sense to me if they do go with Elliot for next year with a mid-aged backup who never got a real shot just yet. Guys like Cann, Patterson and Milan could get some spot starts and be used as a backup who may go on a run (alla the lesser Mason) when given a shot. None seem to be the answer or in the long term plans for the Avs, so development beyond where they are and playing steadily isn't a huge deal for the team at that point. Sure it's bad for that player, but I'd be willing to wager guys toiling for a while like Cann especially would LOVE to at least get his cup of coffee and a shot at more in the NHL.

Pickard and Aittokallio need minutes and to see plenty of pucks, not to mention coaching and time. We'll see, but with the current crop of D men in Colorado, I don't see an average goalie doing well there. Which is also why Anderson and Budaj looked awful. It wasn't completely their fault. Our best D men are offensive minded. Yet the future could change quick if Johnson plays as he did last night, Liles continues to develop as a leader, Quincey remembers how to hit, Wilson learns how to keep his slow feet moving and .... well yah, that's a lot of ifs. Foote retires after this year, no doubt in my mind on that. Front office in a few years with Sakic a definite too.

I wouldn't even be surprised to see Roy, Foote, Sakic and Forsberg all working for the Avs in some capacity down the line, even if Forsberg is more of a European scout type job. He's the one guy who hasn't shown much interest just yet. Foote has GM look if I ever saw it. Again, we'll see.

Next year though, their lineup can be pretty intimidating when/IF healthy. All but in net. Yet neither Budaj or Elliott is signed for next year.

about 5%........really pretty much everything has to break their way for this to happen

right now they're 9 points out with 19 games to go and a game in hand on Carolina. With that said they were 9 out last week too, gaining these last 9-11 points is close to impossible

Parise was cleared to skate today and it would be nice to see him suit up again this season if he's healthy enough to do it.

I think having to climb over 4 teams in the standings is harder than the 9 points. If they were in 9th place, I think they can do it. Now they need 4 teams to all go on a losing streak to make up ground. If one of the four get hot, no matter what the Devs do, it will be meaningless.

The Hunwick trade surely was a joke and looks like a panic move to say the least. Cohen has a future in the league, Hunwick needs to find a new fucking job. SOOOOooo awful.

Elliott too looks like a hasty move, bc I really think he could have got more back from a team looking for some solid insurance on a playoff run. Hell, TB would have been a nice slot, or even the Caps. So many places to push a trade based on last year's season and playoffs, not to mention you explain he just doesn't want to sign and the relationship is soured in Colorado.

On the O'Byrne move, good future O for needed D but he's no answer. Fleisch was the only move I actually liked. I realize Hannan was playing solid d in Colorado, but he's not in the future plans, if a RFA next year as well and our O needs at the time were great with so many people going down. It was a win win until the blood in his lungs decided to clot.

The Stewart/Shats and a 2nd for Johnson/McClement and a first is one of those wait and see. I just can't see though that they needed both Stewart and Shats for Johnson alone. I would have gone ONE of them, the one they wanted more (Shats was more replaceable with all their fast/O-minded D coming up soon) and a lesser players on the side of the puck they didn't select first. PLEASE take Cumiskey, Hunwick ... fuck take'em both and another.

Bottom line, it all really depends on what they turn that #1 into. If it's a #11 pick or close, bc it gets put on hold until next year if it's top 10 (part of the deal), and it hits the deal gets much less unbalanced. Johnson fills a huge need for a big physical d man to replace Foote of old, bc the new one is broken down, old and slow. Still feisty and mean as hell, just not NHL level at this point. O'Byrne just blows and is weak in so many areas.

So yah, even at his current level he fills a need, but he needs to step up and seemingly already has with the Avs. In interviews he has stated MANY times he wants to make the Blues regret moving him. As long as he stays off golf carts I think he will. Yet Stewart and Shats are tough to see go...REAL tough. Shats will be a 50+ pt d man very soon and even better probably. Stewart is a up and down power forward with a ton of speed and grit. He's not easily replaced, but he doesn't bring it every night.

It's basically a 6 team race for 2 spots. Yes the Rangers looked good again today, but have played the most games (68) and have 74 pts. Carolina only has 71pst, but played only 66 games. As it stands right now, they are 7th and 8th overall. Buffalo, winning today again already 1-0, can take over that 8th spot if it stands. As of now they have 70 points and played the least games of anyone in the race, 64. Even Toronto and Atlanta have to be passed, which shows you why and just how hard it will be for them to get into the playoffs at all. Still, until someone at the top gets hot, or those at the bottom cool off, it's a race bt these teams for 2 spots in the East. NY Rangers, Carolina, Buffalo, Toronto, Atlanta and NJ.

You'll probably be saying 8pts behind 8th place Buffalo (who are heating up) in about an hour and a half.

Carolina is in trouble right now, and Atlanta seemingly are dropping out of this race all together very soon. Such a hot start and positive looking season for them just a few weeks back too.

Until the most recent game on his already second back to back for Anderson (played both games in both b 2 b :wallbash:), here were his stats in Ott.

He's won four of six starts with a sparkling .966 save percentage, giving up only seven goals while facing 204 shots.

"Anytime you get a fresh start, that's good," Anderson said. "Not many guys get a restart like this. I look at it as a handout."

And don't look now, the Wild just came back from down 2-0 to tie it going into the third. Going to be a great finish with both team sitting 9th in their respective conferences. I'd assume both would be willing to give up the point to the other team and play it safe to lock up at least one point themselves. Expect a VERY SAFELY played 3rd from both here since they are opp conf teams.

I'm still confused as to how the St. Louis / Avs trade works with the first rounder. I do know the Avs don't get it this year if the pick is top 10. If it's 11 or worse, Avs get it. So this year the best case scenario is a the Blues finishing 20th giving the Avs the 11 pick to go with their seemingly top 4 pick or better of their own (their fall is epic at this point).

So if the Blues do finish 21 or lower, I do know the Avs don't get the pick this year. But what happens to the pick overall and next year? I've never seen that touched on. Is this some ever going rule until they finish 20th or better (can't be) in a year, or do the Avs get their #1 next year no matter what? Anyone?

weekapaugjz
03-07-2011, 07:38 PM
i'd think if the avs don't get the pick this year, they will get STL pick in 2012 no matter where they finish. this is pure speculation on my part, i've never seen a deal worked out like that before in the nhl.

spoon
03-07-2011, 07:52 PM

You're right. I got a little less lazy for a second and looked it up.

The condition is: if the Blues finish among the top 10 worst teams by the end of the year, they have the option to postpone giving a first-round pick to Colorado until 2012. In that case, the Avs would postpone their second-round pick to 2012 as well.

The funny thing is, I assume both teams will be MUCH better next year, definitely the Blues. If the Avs find a GT they can be a playoff team as well. So let's say the Blues stay in their current position of 22nd and get the 8th pick, but the Avs stay in 27th and get the 4th pick. That means the 8th (1st rounder) from the blues for the 34th (2nd rounder) doesn't go down. Difference of 26 picks, but there is HUGE perceived drop off after pick 5 according to the rankings and scouts.

Looking at the 2012 draft class, stacked seems to sum it up well. So is passing making the move in 2011 smart? No matter what it will be a 25 swap probably. Yet next year can be such up or down for either team. Let's say the Avs finish 15th next year (16/46 pick in round 1/2) and the Blues finish 19th overall next year (12th/32). So it's a 12 for 46 swap. Here you have a 34 pick difference in a MUCH better overall draft too. Very catch 22 type deal for the Blues since they get that choice so far based on the rankings.
