Thank you tanless for the background, wow! The 70s were different; I grew up not far from Houston but in a more rural part on 6 acres. we had livestock, fowl, and a garden. Until the late 80s early maybe 1990 we had well water and a septic tank. What we raised we ate, no store bought meat. Also, the summers of late middle school and high school were spent working on a ranch in central Texas. Someone in the family has always had property so holidays/weekends were often spent hunting/fishing/camping. Learned gun safety and how to shoot around my 8th birthday, and as a teen I could survive in the woods with a gun, knife, and a poncho for several days. The Army was more of an extension of my growing up and now 3 acres of what is left of the place I grew up I take care of for my parents. I also manage/co-own 70 acres of forrested land 100 miles north of Houston and have a spot on a nearby lake to one day build a home.

Dave, you are up late did you get work done?

Ok, The windmill didn't produce as promised. Gave up after the second inverter...
...the lesson learned from the windmill is to wire the house twice. Once for ac and once for dc. I suspect there is just to much power lost in the conversion. ... and expecting it to handle major apliences may have been a pipe dream.
Ok,I'm done w/ my southern cal hillbilly history.

Dave, you are up late did you get work done?

Had to switch back to harvesting corn and have have two good days of that. Of course more rain for tomorrow. The 90 acres of soybeans I have left to harvest are to wet to put in storage and arent drying at all in the field. i have no idea what I'm gonna do with them if we don't get some warm weather to dry them out. And November isn't a warm month here in Iowa.

Oh yes, I got 4 1/2 hrs of sleep last night and it ain't looking much better for tonight. Davey don't function well without his sleep.

A lot is lost in the form of heat on the converters and inverters.

I do and opening day happens the weekend of the 6th so I am about to start sacrificing kids to get the rain to stop. With all the work I needed to do and much of it being put off because of hunting season now, I am quite pissed. I've got brush nearly as tall as I am needing knocked down, a dirt bridge over culvert needing repair, trees on the ground still needing to be cut up, and mother fucking fence work to do. I may say fuck you to the second half of hunting season and piss my neighbors off.

How does that "keep us on the map"?

And asking the only 6 people who post in a thread whether it should remain or not - what did you think they'd say?

If you really wanted input you would have asked the entire board.

It's good for both IMO. We Shelter regulars are well integrated into the community but also have a lil nook to come back to and bs with each other and our buddays. It would likely upset some, like me if this place were closed.

What weeds ya killin and what's your poison?

no in lawn stuff, mostly just in beds and around obstacles (where I can) to eliminate weed eater work.

I use a generic Round up concentrate called KILLZ ALL, 2.5 gals = 75$ and the mix is 2 oz. per gal. Mixed stronger this stuff will take down an Oak

Well, settling. As the trash decomposed it settles and can create pits. Methane is highly volatile and other gases stink so you have to take that into consideration. Plus, from the time the dump is "capped" to the time it can be developed is strictly measured by state and federal groups. It is a felony to cross into a dump, even if capped before it is cleared and this process can take 20 or more years.

Initial cost is great because you must purchase the land, dig a big freaking hole, have it properly lined with a thick rubber liner, monitoring wells for contamination, then have it approved by both state and federal groups. You will have 10 years at the most in the life of the pit. After that it is nearly another 20 before you can develop it. There is a significant investment involved both financially and time wise.

My best friend is an environmental scientist so I learned this info from one of his text books.

Cars for second half.... was going to save this

probably pretty stout. I always hate grabbing the hoe when I have a pistol on my ankle, but those fuckers are hard to hit with a bullet. This model has the crimson trace too. It would be fun to put a red dot on a snakes head and make him disappear.
My father had a sawed off 20 ga. double barrel that was about a foot long, he shot a snake from about 10 feet and it disentegrated, he also fractured his wrist. I don't think he ever shot it again.

I am thinking of getting one for my snake killing duties during my work day.

http://www.taurususa.com/product-details.cfm?id=667&category=Revolver&toggle=tr&breadcrumbseries=41

Taurus makes a fairly good inexpensive gun. They are like the Levis of the bluejean world, been around, good craftsmanship, and not expensive.

Seems like it would be a fine tool for killing a snake at close range. I wonder what the recoil would be like.

My point, that has a 3" barrel and not a lot of weight. If you have great grip and arm streigth you'll be fine, me I'd hurt after the first shot. It's akin to shooting a 44 mag.

anyone up for a quick chat room beer? i'm headed there now

Be there in a few.

I have a Taurus .38 special and it is a great gun

Also, that Taurus weighs 45 oz so not a lot of weight to absorb recoil. Link (http://www.galleryofguns.com/Genie/Default.aspx?item=2-441039T&mfg=Taurus&mdl=45-410&cat=1&type=Revolver&cal=45LC|410+Gauge&fin=All&sit=Fixed)

Sounds like it's a good thing I got out of there before Rich showed up and I got sucked into something I couldn't handle.

Harvest update: My crops are out of the field and safely stored for later delivery. The young man who has been running my combine is now doing fall tillage work. Tomorrow I start apply anhydrous ammonia (source of nitrogen) to the fields that will be planted to corn next year. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

I feed them for someone else. Not a big company, just a guy that's had hog forever. He's been hemoraging money for a couple years now and may not be in the business for much longer. He's actually a ways behind on the rent of my building, but I doubt I could find another renter. The manure they produce has value to me as fertilizer if nothing else.
