About the dogs? Where I live isn't a great place for dogs. We have backyards, but they aren't big enough for a large dog to be happy. Walking is fine I guess, but I live in a very densely populated area with lots of traffic. Makes you worry. And many parks are not dog friendly for whatever reason. A dog needs to stretch it's legs. Running up and down the hallway seems like it's enough for the cats though.

I believe that is because we get our vegetables from a variety of other states and also Chile. but local farmers have had to kill plants and it is effecting home gardens too. A lot of the big box stores got tainted plants. It spreads quickly. The colonial recreation village near us had to rip out 3 rows of plants also.

The imported vegetables are often times cheaper than the locally grown. Some of t he supermarkets around here are trying to lower the price of locally grown stuff but the can't do it for everything. Plus most Americans don't eat seasonally so they have to import stuff. We want our strawberries in January damnit! I never understood why we don't get that stuff from the southern states instead of a foreign country.

Unless you get involved in their shady dealings somehow you don't really have to worry. Don't do drugs (though I don't think they are really in the cannabis trade), don't participate in illegal gambling, don't borrow money from anywhere but a bank. Most likely if you follow those rules you will never encounter them.

We are going to get into canning. We got the pressure cooker and canning supplies. Just need the jars. I have to make a trip up to the Tru value. It's hard to find canning equipment around here since most people don't do it any more. It's a shame. Supposedly it is starting to make a comeback because of the recession. And I think people are getting sick of not being able to control what goes in their food. All the added sugars, sodium, and chemicals are getting people fat, ill, and fed up. The rise in food allergies probably will fuel the comeback also.

There are a few families around here that grow corn. Just a few plants so I don't know how much yield they get but I love seeing the stalks peeking up over the fences. My parents grew quite a lot. Some stuff grew great like zucchini. For some reason carrots never worked out, I think our soil was too packed and didn't get tilled deep enough. When we get the backyard in shape and plotted out I will attempt to grow them.
One of my friends grows giant pumpkins and his backyard is tiny. They have to take the fence apart each year to get the pumpkin out for the competitions.
