So Melrose said yesterday that teams should make sure they do all they can not to hurt Crosby.
Not hold back but not go after him on purpose because it would be a huge hit for the league if he has another concussion and has to retire.
What's everyone's stance on this?
If you are going for a cup and see a shot at taking him out, would you?
I just don't think you can play Hockey and hold back.
Does dirty player like Lucic Avery etc go after him?

Didn't the Stanley Cup finals get huge ratings last year and Crosby wasn't involved at all in the playoffs.
Crosby is a polarizing player. He's not universally loved. He is good for the league, but the league can get by without him.

i laughed at that too. Crobsy coming back to save the NHL is how SC is acting. Relax, fools, the NHL was still doin the same as it was before. It wasnt gonna die.
On a side note, holy shit was it impressive though for him to come back that way. I dont watch hockey anymore, dont really care to, sadly. But thats still impressive

There was a huge following last night and actually led SC.
But yea NHL does not do that great a job promoting their stars for it to really matter as it should.

I understand scoring 4 pts in a game is huge, but let's not forget 1) it's the Islanders and 2) it was a guy making his first NHL start in goal.
Not demeaning what he did, just tempering the hype.

it's pure stupidity and melrose's lust for sid's awful stache is pathetic
it's hockey, toughen up or go home
part of being good in the sport is durability/taking a hit, not just hands and skill
if that was the case, Svatos would be much better versus getting knocked off of pucks with a cough or brisk wind from a child waving a foam puck.

He's a fucking beast, this much is known, but what the fuck does ESPN know about hockey at this point? Their best analyst is awful, licked Crosby's balls on camera ("could have been 8 pts" puke in my mouth) and haven't credibly covered the sport in years. They have zero clue and or care at this point. NBC taking over with Vs can only help the sport, but to a reasonable level I hope. I don't want it bastardized by fringe fans and the sport be ruined more (hitting, fighting and more for the "kids/lesser fans").

yet you are doing just that
the guy has to be a little nervous bc of the type of injury he has/had, and the Isle are KNOWN for some dirty/rough play
sorry, it's the NHL and he put up 4 pts (2 goals) a year removed from the ice
come on, that's just sick at any level
especially since everyone focuses on this guy out there and tries to line him up/slow him down
Kevin
11-22-2011, 10:15 AM
You can't damper what he did.
2goals 4pts is a great night for a guy 100% in the flow, let alone a guy who missed almost a full year.

While I'm sure buf would love to end the B's 9 game winning streak, this game is about so much more right now.
As I say this, Buf scores on the resulting power play bc the Bruins decided to fight behind their net 5 vs. 3 and twice went third man in from what I saw.
I don't expect this to get less physical either. Someone in this game will leave hurt.

He annouces great plays by BOTH teams with excitement unlike most annoucers who sound like thier dog was murdered when the other team scores. The problem is Boston is a large hockey market and unlike most other announcers he gets pub for supporting his team. It amazes me how cunthurt fans get over the announcers from the opposing team.

indeed
that line is something I wanted for a long time
perfect mix in my mind
ROR - intense/hardworking play-maker
Hejduk - shoot first two way player, but little physicality
Landeskog - hit first, shoot second, drive the net rook set to light this league up in the near future
However, I'm still not convinced Sacco knows what he's doing. And EJ is a huge disappointment thus far, reaching for everything, not playing the body in the middle of the ice ever and constantly being walked around.

The top four teams in each Conference qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four respective Conference champions would meet in the third round of the Playoffs, with the survivors playing for the Stanley Cup.

Playoff system is: 4 teams from each conference. The 4 teams then battle it out to be the conference winner. So, for example:
Conference IV
1. Pitt
2. Philly
3. NYR
4. Wash
1 vs 4, 2 vs 3
Winners play each other to determine conference champ.
Who ever wins each conference would then be seeded 1 to 4 based on points. So, you could have an All West or All East final.

Can't say I remember this clearly or much about him outside of being the top D pick in 2010, which was pretty D light overall. I still would say Fowler has a MUCH bigger upside at the top of that draft and thus far has proven so (picked later). Also, Gudbranson's not exactly lighting it up with 2 points (1g/1a) in 24 games. It still had to hurt picking #3 in a draft with a 1/2 like Hall and Sequin. Still, Skinner went #7 and he's PHENOMENAL but nobody but the Canes had him that high.

Nah, take a look...it's 24 games and makes sense since he pretty much broke camp with the Panthers on October 8th, his first NHL game and tallied his first goal the other day. PTI is soooo off on hockey and concussions. Kornheiser basically tried to say the NHL has to stop fighting to even start addressing it bc you can't have it both ways. WHAT? The rarity that is a concussion from the few fights that are left at this point is so minimal it's comical he made that statement. I hate outsiders commenting on a game they have no fucking clue about.
To me, the uptick is linked to a game with more speed than ever due to the way the game is called & rule changes tied to faster, bigger players involved in some big hits. The final factor is better diagnosis and in place treatment timelines based on symptoms and walaa, more concussions not some warranted attack on fighting you dumb fuck. He just won't let that go and it's sad.

I wonder if they have looked into helmet tech again? I find it hard to believe that hockey helmets are as technologically advanced as football helmets, they just don't look the same. I know there is an issue with weight probably, in that hockey helmets seem or need to be lighter and football helmets can be heavier... probably a stupid thought, but I figure hey, guys are hurting their heads a lot, maybe lets take a look at helmets again and pay some scientist money to research and save our star players brains.

Pretty solid rundown on the bad crews in my mind. I haven't taken much notice of this top 5, which usually means a good job. One I always enjoy that this cat missed was the LA Kings crew and more specifically their color guy, Jim Fox. San Jose always struck me as a good crew overall too, especially Drew Remenda's rundown on the game. Probably just an issue being he mainly covers an east coast/conf team though.

because they are. they have a very strict guideline about allowing a player back on the ice (in game) or later to let them back into practice.

Rangers won earlier in the season with about a second left in the game.
They topped that one tonight by winning with a tenth of a second left.
Richards throws a wild shot at the Coyotes goal, hits the post and goes in.
And the Coyotes fans are shocked and just KILLING their goalie. It was the flukiest, freakiest of plays - not only hitting the post but also with the amount of time left - and they still say it was Smith's fault.
On the bright side, Phoenix had a very, very good crowd tonight. Better than I've seen at Devils games on Saturdays.

NHL is taking concussions more serious than nfl. Not that that is saying much. Almost every week I see Wes Welker get blasted going across the middle. He has the same look all these concussed guys get in hockey or football. Of course it's not reported in football, it's just that he's tough. Everyone gets freaked out about this summers deaths of ex enforcers, but don't bat an eye when the consistant string of nfl players end up dead at 50.
Both leagues need to do more but it won't happen till more is know about concussions and cte.

Maybe its because it's the QB there are other examples. However other positions get more attention in NFL. Like my team finding out the TE has symptoms during practices and will probably be shut down to play Sun..
spoon
12-21-2011, 04:09 PM
there is a lot of contact in hockey too, just different
there would be a LOT more concussions in the NFL if they allowed the old Ronnie Lott/Harrison type hits in the open field and they had NHL type helmets. The NHL has high speed impacts all over the place, with the body (head to head/elbow/knew), with the ice and of course the boards and glass. The NFL doesn't have that factor and MUCH better helmets.
spoon
12-21-2011, 04:12 PM
Also, the NHL has done everything to open up the game in terms of speed and hence big impact plays are up, while the NFL has made plenty of rule changes to actually protect the QBs and WRs from hits to the head, even linemen with head slaps/hands to the face. The NHL has added a little, but it's the speed and open game (no clutching/holding/hooking and interference) that has upped the concussion rates to me.

Each 24/7 with the Winter Classic seemingly shows different coaching styles, mentalities and disposition. To me, I can see how Torts can simply get old fast. As an amateur athlete, much less long-time pros. There is some respect there at times, but it's a whole lot of f bombs, screaming at you like a bad child and too light on actual hockey at times even though it's in him. He's an emotional nut out there sure, but he definitely needs to tone it down. I can see why Lundqvist felt comfortable being in that band with another talented big mouth, John Mac.
To me, I'd much rather play for a guy like Lavs bc he picks his spots and clearly loves his team. I could only take a guy like Torts for a little while...and it has to be the main reason he lost his team in TB despite a title.
