Key point in the article
"The White House had already come under fire for what critics said was overselling the credentials of Dr. Berwick. The Washington Times reported this week that two Harvard professor positions claimed for Dr. Berwick were essentially "honorary" posts with minor teaching and administrative duties."

Unless it is a pretty extreme example, no first world country is going to allow one of its citizens to be extradited to a country that practices extraordinary rendition. Do you think America would in this case if France or the Swiss practiced extraordinary rendition? Has more to do with our shitty policy than our shitty president.

Here is a reference from the New England Journal of Medicine:
N Engl J Med. 2007 Dec 6;357(23):2329-37.
Childhood body-mass index and the risk of coronary heart disease in adulthood.
"The risk of any CHD event, a nonfatal event, and a fatal event among adults was positively associated with BMI at 7 to 13 years of age for boys and 10 to 13 years of age for girls. The associations were linear for each age, and the risk increased across the entire BMI distribution."
Things like checking BMI don't just make it into medicine because someone thinks it would be fun- they have to be studied and ultimately published in peer reviewed journals. So the way it can help you can judge is by doing studies to see if it correlates/predicts negative health outcomes. Certainly it isn't a 100% absolute risk factor, but it is, based on studies, a risk factor for poor health outcomes.
It is like smoking- we've all heard about some who smoked but lived to 90. But do those exceptions change the fact that smoking is strongly associated with an increased risk of multiple cancers and coronary artery disease?

That's all well and good when we're talking about a medical setting and professionals can truly evaluate someone's health. But when it's just a value on a spreadsheet, potentially being used for factoring insurance costs, and god knows what else the central planners have up their sleeves, then there is genuine cause for concern.
If I'm some athlete who's BMI says I'm obese, and as a result I'm placed in some "high risk" bracket, I'm going to be furious.

a) they got their own risks, no need to quote BMI against how much it costs to keep them alive in their last 5 years Chris Henry, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver who died in a traffic accident last year, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) -- a form of degenerative brain damage caused by multiple hits to the head -- at the time of his death, according to scientists at the Brain Injury Research Institute, a research center affiliated with West Virginia University.
b) It's an average. BMI is something that measures against the average person. If you go around claiming every American male is 5'10, you're never going to be particularly far off in your estimate. It's a broad average but statistically speaking, it is accurate enough to say that if your BMI is 30+, you're obese. For every athlete you cite as having a BMI above 30, there are probably a hundred thousand Americans that are legitimately obese with a BMI of 30+.

Yes, the makers of charts and graphs and papers can do that all they'd like. In that case, means and medians are all that matter.
But as long as we're talking about the law, those rare exceptions still count.
One day you will succeed in rewriting the Constitution to say that laws should be made to do the greatest good for the greatest number of people. But until then, Mr. Bentham, I'll have to politely disagree.
Yes, the makers of charts and graphs and papers can do that all they'd like. In that case, means and medians are all that matter.
And as far as it seems, that is all it is:
Under this mandate in the stimulus law, Secretary Sebelius issued a regulation--developed by Dr. Blumenthal--that requires that all EHRs keep track of a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) score. Body Mass Index is a ratio between a person’s weight and height, and is used to determine whether or not someone is overweight or obese. It is the preferred method of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for measuring obesity.
You still get checked for fattitude by your doctor for health insurance stuff where applicable, so this isn't new information.
This is just a way of trying to get people conscious about obesity, not discriminating against them. If there are some people who have overweight/obese BMI but aren't really overweight/obese, there aren't that many of them and they won't throw off the general number. This is just a step toward getting patients and doctors conscious about their weight and taking steps toward maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan.
Dude!

Its bullshit and here is why.
At 25 years old I was 6'2 , 215 pounds and built like a brick shithouse. I was also considered "obese" according to the BMI scale.
Now I did know guys similar in height and weight that were fat, but the fact that they classified me as obese back then proved to me it was a fucking joke because it didnt take into account how much of my weight was muscle and how much was fat.

bullshit or an attempt to quantify an epidemic with a scale that clearly has exceptions?
if you're "built like a brick shithouse", how do you feel about paying the same insurance and ultimately having to cover the healthcare costs of fatso's with poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles who will require alot of medical care for heart disease, etc?

The daily show was showing clips of President Bush on Dr. Phil.
"The hour, which emitted a warm-and-fuzzy feeling, dealt with such family matters as whether children should be spanked – now-22-year-old twin daughters Jenna and Barbara Bush were not – while it consciously sidestepped such harsh campaign issues as Iraq and the economy."

You seem intelligent. Please don't tell me you honestly believed he was going to "change how things are done in Washington". As I said countless times before, that is the biggest line of bullshit a politician can say.
Don't get me wrong, there have been politicians who tried to change things. We call them "one-termers".

I honestly believed he would change things -- he was the first guy to stand up against the Clintons. That meant a lot to me, especially as the primary dragged on. It's easier for an elf like Kucinich to stand up against the Clintons since he's not really a serious candidate. Obama was a serious candidate and went up against all the power and clout they Clintons and the DLC had. I thought maybe we'd see some improvement in the strength of the citizens over corporations in government. Instead here we are subsidizing health insurance companies and giving money to banks so that they can sell it back to us at a premium. Ooops, sorry about that folks.

Silly rabbit, bailouts in a downturn are actually good for the economy. Just ask Senator John McCain's economic advisor:
McCain’s Economist: Dem Policies Averted Great Depression, Saved 8.5 Million Jobs (http://www.dems.gov/blog/mccain-s-economist-dem-policies-averted-great-depression-saved-85-million-jobs)
A report out today by Mark Zandi, an economic advisor to John McCain and Chief Economist at Moodys.com, and Mark Blinder, an economics professor at Princeton and former Vice Chair of the Fed, found that “the U.S. economy has made enormous progress since the dark days of early 2009.”
Read excerpts from the report:
We find that its effects on real GDP, jobs, and inflation are huge, and probably averted what could have been called Great Depression 2.0. For example, we estimate that, without the government’s response, GDP in 2010 would be about 6½% lower, payroll employment would be less by some 8½ million jobs, and the nation would now be experiencing deflation.
Facts are so biased like that.

What's wrong with the Volt? PHEV40s aren't going to be cheap -- the post fossil fuel future isn't going to be cheap either. Even if biobutanol and ethanol work in the most optimistic fashion we're going to be dealing with cars that are they themselves using fuels that contain less energy per unit. On top of that, the stored energy itself will require more energy to be used in the production of said stored energy. On top of even that the logistical issues of moving corrosive fuel, the lack of production plants and the fact that not all cars are even remotely ready to be run on a biobutanol/ethanol blend.
The Volt is a great car despite what your TV pundits say.
Also one of the people involved with the Volt at GM stated the reason for recommending premium gas is that it stores longer than regular gas in addition to the higher thermal efficiency of being able to run higher compression.

The housing market is still flat on its back. The tax credit made things worse. Everytime the gov't steps in it artifically inflates prices. Now that the credit expired theres a huge supply of inventory on the market. Prices need to fall to the apporpriate price as determined by the market so there can be a natural bottom and that way is for the gov't to stay out

So you advocate removing the tax incentives for owning houses? That artificially inflates price as well.

How did the tax credit help?
More inventory because theres no subsidy to buy a home means prices go down. Simple microeconomics.
The feds should have allowed the natural decline of home prices so that there could be a true bottom. It would have made homes be set to their actual price based on inventory, thus making them affordable for people to buy

The military was last funded without a regular income tax in 1913, and it had showed up periodically since the Civil War! It's hilarious that you equate funding a 19th Century military defending a much smaller country (and hell, without a freakin' air force) with being able to fund one today without appropriate taxation! So you want to jack up our other taxes to account for the loss of income tax? You might want to explain just how we're eternally securing all of our borders and still having enough for national defense while you're slashing out the income for these services! Let me guess, you're just repeat how you're for cutting the defense budget, right? Hey, you seem to keep forgetting that protecting us from scary illegal immigrants via secure borders would require locking down all of borders, or do you think that illegals would just choose to not use the much larger and mostly unguarded US/Canadian border on the honor system?
So you want to jack up our other taxes to account for the loss of income tax?

Its also pretty hard to get things done when every idea you have gets 100% opposition from the opposing party. Once the elections over, arent the 2 parties supposed to work together for the greater good? The healthcare bill for 9/11 volunteers is a perfect example. I think most people on the left thought he was an incredibly smart guy, because of his academic background that gave good speeches that could unite the democratic party and get some key initiatives passed (he failed, and succeeded in some ways with this).

Do you think 4 youtube videos proves anything? Have you seen the videos the kids did for McCain and Palin? I can only speak of the people around me and left-leaning writers I read. No one classified him as the second-coming, the only time I heard that type of stuff was from conservative radio and FoxNews. In your journeys arguing with people on messageboards, would people often retort: "BUT OBAMA IS GOING TO FIX EVERY PROBLEM WE HAVE BECAUSE HE'S THE BEST EVEREEREREREREVER"?

Thats just a sample of whats out there. There are a lot of progressive/left leaning Dems that I know who aren't on messageboards, co workers, friends etc. who thought that Obama would be the end to all the problems.
The idol worship of him is real. Remember the creepy looking Hope lithograph and the "O" Symbol? How many different subgroups were there for example Cyclists for Obama
Youre right about Palin as she is the female version of Obama just much better looking. But I don't want her to even enter her name in the race for '12. Shes a goddamn embarassment

I'm sorry, I just don't see what you are saying. Besides a few videos of children singing and Chris Matthews being an idiot, I find the "the left thought Obama was the messiah" argument to be bumper sticker nonsense.
And comparing Palin to Obama is absolutely insane, and it always has been. My guess is that McCain's legacy will be severly tarnished from a historical perspective because of his '08 VP pick.

Not bumper sticker nonsense, Just huge expectations for someone who ended up being just another politician.
You don't think the evangelicals and NEO Cons look to Palin as a quasi celebrity? the woman has a huge following

It was used by conservatives to scare people. This stuff happens to all candidates, left and right. From the moment Obama had his acceptance speech and they were picking apart the columns behind him for being too Hellenic or whatever the criticism was you had to know the right was trying to scare undecided voters about a black guy being worshipped and if you vote for him they'll have KFC in the White House.

You can't have it both ways when it comes to his race. When he 1st announced his candidacy Sharpton, Jackson and the rest of the poverty pimps along with the established race hustlers said Obama wasn't black enough and Hillary was their gal. When he got the nomination, then they all flocked to Obama.

But you never answered my question...here this guy proposes free healthcare for 9/11 volunteers...and every republican shoots it down. Is that his fault? Would that not have been something good that he accomplished as president? Yet, spitefullness fucks over good people. Hows he to blame for that?

The 9/11 healthcare bill being shot down was just as much the dems fault as it was the GOP. Blame the idiots in Congress for that. Remember Weiner and King from last month?
Obama is nothing but a corporatist democrat. More war, high unemployment and greasing the palms of Wall St.

Face it
His performance as president sucks and it has nothing to do with his race. He really underestimated the responsibility of his office. After he's done with his term hopefully in 2013, he's going to joing a few corporate boards, make speeches and get paid even more. He's not a socialist or Marxist contrary to what the baggers believe. The man lives in complete opulence and will do so for the rest of his life.

The most glaring reason to that other than the 9/11 workers thing was when he had the State of the Union just prior to the healthcare vote..
He made of point of wanting to tax the hell out of Corps that have thier factorys outside the US to try to make them re open them here and make more jobs for the US worker..
Not ONE Republican stood up and cheered for it.
But they constantly bitch about the issue whenever they talk about companies taking jobs away from Americans.
Total douchebaggery.

From the original stimulus 230 Billion was already allocated towards infrastructure. Only a percentage of that was used. So why are we borrowing another 50 billion when the money is already there?
He had Biden in Charge of all these funds Well somebody better mess with Joe. This is going to turn out to be Obama's big dig.
Enough with the "investments" jingle. Investments are made by people who take risks. Since the Fed gov't doesnt have to worry about that, theres no risk
Can it with the Bush misappropriated funds. We all know that. Obama was supposed to be the person who would change everything but he's not. In many ways he is like his predecessor.

Maybe not you per se thinking that he would be a messiah.
The Dems took control of Congress in Jan '07. Everyone got their wish and Obama was elected in '08. How the fuck are things better. He has taken Bush's stupidity and gave it steroids in regards to economic and fiscal policy. How is a stimulus a success when theres a net loss of jobs? Its simple math.
I know that in a lot of Presidents 1st terms they usually lose a majority of their partys seats but the resentment towards him and Congress and the policies they laid out is very high. Even the established republicans are getting shitcanned. He is losing the indies. I know his base will still support him even though hes continuing a failed policy in Afghanistan and still approving some forms of torture but hes got a huge hole to climb out from. Im not saying its impossible but its not looking too good.
