I take no joy knowing that he was going to be a disappointment. I said this 4 years ago when he announced his candidacy. I wish I was wrong but I am not happy that these programs aren't working because I knew tha they were going to be huge failures and that should have never been passed

As you already know, I agree on the two I underlined in your quote. However, the "starve them out so they would self deport" is not only ignorant, but completely wrong. To think they'd just self deport is classic, and crime rates would never be impacted in this scenario AT ALL I'm sure.

I'd much rather an idealist who had some hope to change shit versus more W bullshit. As Tripskeet pretty much said, government is basically a money funnel for the rich to take from the masses at this point. War is the easiest way to do it, along with privatization (for example prison systems). Corporations are indeed so entrenched with both side's political brass it's pathetic. The campaign contribution changes recently passed send the system into more negative flux as well, as the common man's voice gets even smaller.

Anyone in their right mind wouldn't purposely want this country to go down the tubes just to get their guy elected, However the Keynesian economic policies, excessive spending and structural debts military interventions are not going to pay for everything. I agree that our tax structure is a big problem but hypothetically speaking if the rates were raised back to pre Reagan rates. I think 70% marginal, if the spending isn't cut, then there isnt any tackling of the debt/deficits.

Anyone running for Pres in 2012 needs to have a set and be honest even though the truth hurts. For example Iowa is the 1st Caucus state. It seems like the day after inaugaration day, the A listers set up shop in Iowa, then as campaign season kicks off you see them eating corn and pandering to the farmers.

If a candidate were serious, he would tell the corn farmers that the other states simply can not subsidize your crops IE ethanol. or subsidize people not to grow anything. Sure he will get boo'd out of town but if his message is clear and if he can articulate that, then the people in other states will realize that.

The biggest problem with these numbers has always been that they are totally based on who applies for/who collects "unemployment benefits"..
They don't account for....
A) people who's benefits have run dry and still don't have a job..
B) people who were denied and had their applications processed out of the system..
C) people who worked off the books (like half of most big cities)..
D) and imho, this is the biggest indicator..people attempting to enter the job market who haven't worked a day yet..ie. Collage grads, single mothers, teenagers in the summer..When I was a kid everyone had some type of summer job, now they're competing with senior citizens who have been priced out of life, degree holders who can't get a job in their chosen profession or Joe the plumber who's unemployment ran out..
The jobless situation in this country is off the charts mainly because our government saw to it that all manufacturing leave and leave fast..30 years ago EVERYTHING you looked at, touched, heard or smelled in your daily life was made in America..Now, you'd have to really hunt for something made here...I love my country but it affects me on a personal level to watch what the government/elite are doing to it.. and it almost seems like, just because it isn't happening on live tv on a 30 minute broadcast nobody can see it..

Edit: in my haste I left out the families that are on the Wellfare rolls, they are given a couple of hundred bucks a month and bought out of the unemployment figures..And this is a huge demographic that gets whitewashed in this equation..

The charts represent the number of jobs lost (below the zero line) or gained (above) in the months surrounding the financial crises and recession. The red bars are from when Bush was in office, blue from when Obama took over.

The world economy is a very complex thing which is why economists of all stripes are always much better explaining what happened in the past than what is going to happen (and why very few are very rich). I think it helps a debate to be up front about one's biases before you pontificate so here are mine: I supported the Bush/Paulson policies going out the door and Bernanke's air dropping tons of cash onto Wall St. (and elsewhere) as a necessary evil to prevent a world-wide economic depression even if it bailed out a lot of "fat cats" from their own mistakes. I also supported Obama's stimulus progam as a necessary step to jumpstart the economy. So even though I admit that this is an overly simplistic explanation, I will point out that once the Obama/Democratic stimulus package passed in March of 2009 net job losses slowed until they turned positive a little more than a year ago.

Of course, there are other views on this which should be proffered shortly.
