The president and his wife separately gave each daughter a $12,000 gift under a section of the federal tax code that exempts such donations from federal taxes.

The president said, “you can try to make it really tough on people who look like they, quote, unquote look like illegal immigrants. One of the things that the law says is that local officials are allow to ask somebody who they have a suspicion might be an illegal immigrant for their papers — but you can imagine if you are a Hispanic American in Arizona, your great, great grandparents may have been there before Arizona was even a state. But now suddenly if you don’t have your papers and you took your kid out to get ice cream, you’re going to be harassed, that’s something that could potentially happen.”

OH MY GOD IT'S A TRAVESTY: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/07/illegal-immigrant-instate_n_892435.html

Connecticut is now among 12 states, including New York and Illinois, that grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who are working toward legal status.

...

Fewer than 50 illegal immigrants are expected to take advantage of the new law immediately, with the University of Connecticut expecting less than 10 for its next term. But advocates say that number could rise to 250 across Connecticut within the year as enrollment increases at community colleges in particular.

I would say the title '164 Anti- Illegal Immigration Laws Have Passed Since 2010' is right. The chart on the 1st url breaks it all down.

The right has been passing blanket laws where they have state power all along.

If a state has a huge influx of illegals there are going to be costs associated with having illegal aliens in a state. However the costs to jail them are miniscule compared to educating their anchor babies . Medicaid is about the same amount as jailing them i'll use CA as an example

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/immigrationnaturalizatio/a/caillegals.htm

I take issue with any state being a Sanctuary one however, If they want to provide all these lavish entitlements to them on a state basis, fine. Just dont go crying to the other states for a bailout

There wouldnt be a need for private prisons if some of these drug laws were repealed and some drugs decriminalized.

hanso
04-29-2012, 04:45 PM
Yeah the drug thing but the cart is ahead of the horse. Prison for profit, think about it. (nation-of-incarceration)

"Nationwide, the numbers are staggering: Nearly 2.4 million people behind bars, even though over the last 20 years the crime rate has actually dropped by more than 40 percent.

"The United States has about 5 percent of the world's population, but we have 25 percent of the world's prisoners - we incarcerate a greater percentage of our population than any country on Earth," said Michael Jacobson, director of the non-partisan Vera Institute of Justice. He also ran New York City's jail and probation systems in the 1990s.

A report by the organization, "The Price of Prisons," states that the cost of incarcerating one inmate in Fiscal 2010 was $31,307 per year. "In states like Connecticut, Washington state, New York, it's anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000," he said.

Yes - $60,000 a year. That's a teacher's salary, or a firefighter's. Our epidemic of incarceration costs us taxpayers $63.4 billion a year."

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3445_162-57418495/the-cost-of-a-nation-of-incarceration/

Do you think for a moment if the right gets their way with privatizing prisons this will somehow turn around?

Also it's a safe bet that the states with Anti-Immigration Laws are setting up large detention centers and are pushing for privatizing them as well as prisions.

WRESTLINGFAN
04-29-2012, 06:14 PM
In many cases local / state jails ask for compensation from the fed govt because they take a long time to come and get the illegals after a detainer is put on them. Only the feds can deport someone, States can hold them but they have to turn them over. Now if the process can get streamlined that would save taxpayers money.

Illegal aliens even though they are not citizens or greencard holders do have some basic rights, one of them is a trial. If an illegal alien is convicted of grand larceny or rape, he should serve his time and then get deported. If hes arrested on a DUI then there should be an expedited process for removal.

My issue with the secret service is that there are too many agents and another example of a bloated federal government. Stop acting like he's any less involved with other causes, you know, like all the policy and gov programs you hate so much. The hypocrisy on you level is unreal. He doesn't see eye to eye much with GE's CEO either, but they still work together overall and have actually become friends with completely different ideology. I guess you just want complete fractioned parties, like with Lugar's possible replacement in Indiana. It's NOT the answer, it the complete opposite. Party first versus country is what got us here in the first place...on both ends. And your bs is exactly what helps string it along, over and over again.

Hypocrisy? Im not the one bitching about wall st fat cats and rich people and then the same day going out to whore myself for campaign cash. Speaking of Immelt why doesnt Obama call him out for being one of the biggest proponents of outsourcing.

Obama ran his mouth about the JPM 2 billion trade loss but theres a much bigger loss at the federal level. 2 billion is lost in the blink of an eye. So whats going to happen, theres going to be calls for more bureaucracy and more regulation. Lets have another 2600 page bill named after a dickbag Senator with legalese so companies can find loopholes around legislation. Im not against regulation but does it have to be so damn complex that it looks like its written in a foreign language? The more these politicians try to reform the bigger the fools they turn out being

What does Dick Lugar have to do with anything? People said 36 years is enough and they voted to go with someone else. Or maybe we should just repeal the 17th amendment and let the state legislatures go back to electing senators

On Lugar, you BETTER know what I meant and just playing dumb to make a dicky point. If you don't, you truly don't even read the links you post or follow what you speak on. Lugar and his new republican hopeful, Mourdock had HUGE differences in how to interact and work with the other party. Sure, I'm always one for getting new voices into government positions as a LONG TIME proponent for term limits. Yet it isn't always a good change simply bc it's someone new. Mourdock believes in NEVER working together and is a hard line tea party asshat with some fucked up views if you ask me. If you missed my tie to Lugar versus Mourdock point you are more off than I thought. If not, then you are simply playing this bullshit game even more...not sure which is worse.

How is it being naive for pointing out the obvious. As far as financial overhaul, does it really take a 2000+ page law with so much legalese? Does everything have to be so damn complicated. Look at our tax laws. 70K pages and growing by the year but yet there are still armies of lawyers and accountants who find loopholes.

I know about Lugar, that he cut deals and Mourdock doesnt want to . However do you really think people on the far left like Boxer want to compromise ? Its either their way of fuck off

The bigger issue is that Dick didnt really live in Indiana he would have some temporary address. How can someone represent a state when hes almost never there. That would be like someone living in Tribeca but he has a small office in Harlem but he wants to represent the people of Harlem. Dick was a carpetbagger

I'm sorry, we were talking about Boxer and her dealings with the other side now were we? It's almost comical how you converse, it's as if I just defended Boxer's positions completely and her lack of compromising in your mind. It's unreal to be honest.

And it wasn't the living arrangement angle on the Lugar dealings that applied to this conversation WF, it was the difference in his ability to compromise and work with the other side, versus Mourdock's refusal and platform NOT TO in any way. It's usually the case too, as the Left is not pretty much the center of the last decade and the right is off the page. Compromise to me has been severely one-sided of late. Just look to the super committee recently for a recent example.

Im not disagreeing that the electorate saw Lugar as compromising too much, but they also want a change. They voted that 36 years is enough. Now if Mourdock loses to the Democratic opponent then its on them.

Politicians on both sides have this sense of entitlement that the voters have to reelect them over and over. The only way to inflict term limits is to vot them out. Lugar had that mentality

I don't get why Ali Soufan is mentioned, other than just saying he wrote a book about al Qaeda. It seems to be a major boner to speak of Soufan in the same breath as "harsh treatment", with allusions to the Bush administration policy of officially sanctioned torture and abuse of prisoners, as if there is some equivalence.

I am quite familiar with Mr. Soufan.
He was a brilliant FBI interrogator who got incredible amounts of intelligence using traditional, humane interrogation approaches from the likes of Abu Zubaida and Fahd al-Quso, AQAP operations chief who was just killed by an American drone.
Soufan interrogated al Quso after the USS Cole was bombed and got intelligence connecting the plot to al Qaeda.
Soufan's September 12, 2001 interrogation of al-Quso solidly established al Qaeda's responsibility for the attacks.
Soufan's interrogation of Zubaida, Abu Jandal and others shows how extremely effective humane interrogation approaches are.

There are no such heroes among the pro-torture and abuse crowd.
To bring up Soufan is to invite comparisons between torture and abuse and humane interrogation methods; the first established by Bush Jr. and the second abolished by Obama. it is a losing argument for the pro-torture and abuse crowd.
Not only does the phrase "harsh treatment" point in that direction, but so does the career of Mr. Soufan, which I have extensive notes on, as well as many other interrogators in the FBI, military, CIA and MI5.

I am jealous.
Since the whole abuse and torture of prisoners issue came up, I have collected quite a bit of information on the general topic of interrogation. Among my voluminous notes are accounts of interrogations he conducted or participated in, such as those listed, above.
Soufan was extraordinarily talented and served our country with distinction.
The most successful interrogators I have found all employed approaches similar to those Soufan employed. Not a single one of over 60 career professional interrogators in the military, CIA and FBI I have found who commented on abuse and torture of prisoners endorsed such tactics. They were unanimously opposed because they know how well humane traditional approaches work and are proud of their profession, not wishing to be turned into a bunch of black-hooded Torquemadas.

I look forward to purchasing a copy of Soufan's book.
I know he worked for Rudy Giulliani at some security firm after Soufan left the FBI, but am unaware if he is still with that outfit.
The New Yorker published a nice article about him:

So, you think W's agreement wasn't tripe and Obama's timeline in the end wouldn't have been quicker than McCain and the pubs? Bottom line is it still happened, and under Obama. It's easy to set up "withdraws" for future presidents, and have it all changed in two seconds, as was the plan probably. Obama pulled it through, you know, the actual withdrawing of troops, not just saying it like W did with victory YEARS before.

Why do you bother? Its obvious hes not going to give Obama an ounce of credit for his entire presidency. Not for the killing of Bin Laden, not for the drop in illegal immigration, and not for withdrawing the troops for Iraq. Everything that has happened on Obamas watch, the republicans have an excuse for not giving him credit for it. The fucking guy could walk on water and theyd criticize him for not knowing how to swim.

Well even the staunches republicans admitted he was walking into the biggest shitstorm a president has had to enter since FDR. Blaming him for the economy is like giving a chef a piece of shit and then complaining he didnt cook it right.

Im not saying hes perfect by any measure. I hate the fact extended the Patriot Act and didnt shut down GITMO. But I also saw how everything he did try to do was fought tooth and nail by republicans even it was right and made sense. (Free healthcare for 9/11 responders?)

Personally I blame the system. I have no faith in it anymore. Its become all about money. Who can spend the most and collect the most. Exactly -- especially when most of the time it's done around the same time Congress and the Supreme Court are not in session. And it's not like a President isn't doing pretty much the same daily work anyway.

I don't care who the President is. Being trapped in the White House has got be boring. I don't blame any of them for wanting to get away from there from time to time. I'm just sick of the false outrage that certain Presidents have to deal with compared to others.

Frequent Fundraiser: Obama Sets Record (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/05/obama-easily-switches-into-campaign-mode-for-fundraisers/)

Obama has headlined 132 re-election fundraisers for his campaign and the Democratic Party since early last year, according to tracking by ABC News and U.S. Naval Academy political scientist Brendan Doherty.

President George W. Bush attended 86 fundraisers for his re-election campaign, the Republican Party or both groups during his first term. Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush appeared at a total of 70 and 24, respectively.

And as Obama travels the country – or across the street, as was the case last night – taxpayers foot most of the bill, experts say

bottom line is something has to change, meaning we need a one term...6 year or so term presidents and no more. this running every 4 is such a joke and in the way so much. I get the immediate lame duck effect, but we need to change this running shit WHILE in office, almost any office, as with the new rules and new campaigns being soooo long, expensive and tiresome, it simply needs to go. It's too soon to attribute who did what -- the whole operation has been confused by the squawkboxes that called out Holder. They were accusing him of things happening back in 2007. Wait till the fire dies down because I'm 100% certain both the Bush and Obama offices were heavily involved with a reckless War on Drugs moneymaking scheme.

So averting a great depression, prolonging the life of medicare, ending a war, passing healthcare, saved the auto industry, repairing our foreign relations and getting Bin Laden is "inept"? All that even while being hindered by the worst congress ever who have done nothing but hindered the recovery from day one when the 112th took over...

What does that make Romney?

Kicking the can down the road by inflating the currency, gutting medicare (which Ryan will do also for the same amount) Like Obamacare will be a success. Look at Medicare. Obamacare will suffer the same fate. Foreign relations improving? We are still hated. The Arab spring blew up in his face. Is Terrorism over? One dead Arab doesnt cut it. The Auto industry is far from saved. Its at least a 25 billion dollar loss and will eventually need another bailout. GM is losing market share. Stock is trading below 20. Sales numbers are due to mostly the gov't purchasing these vehicles. Let me add all the green energy scams and allowing Mexican cartels to receive weapons and he seals those records via executive privilege.

Great record.

Makes Romney if he gets elected. Meet the new boss same as the old one.

Great choices

These things you denounce were done with that in mind. Of course it's not a good thing to keep expanding, but at times it is needed ( rescission / depression )

The expanding policies although not used to full extents in many cases, have held check with some small growth.

The choice

The other side Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want cuts made which should have the opposite effect. It has been estimated that in two years 4 million jobs would be lost under their plans.

You see it's not that the left loves expanding policies it's that they have to in order to fix the economies that the right has fucked over every time.
