If you were to mix Brand New, Manchester Orchestra, and Thrice and add a dash of Pink Floyd, you'd have O'Brother.

from the songs you listed, I see very little Manchester or Floyd
not a fan of his over the top vocals that Muse sometimes puts me off with

I forgot to mention Muse. They do have some of that sound to them. If you listen to the album as a whole it has somewhat of a Pink Floyd vibe (Dark Side of the moon comes to mind).

This song gives me the Manchester comparison. Sure, it helps that Andy Hull sings on it. And that he produced the album. But I hear the similarities. People from Georgia stick together.

well they did open for them in NY and we both were there last year, weren't you?
those atlanta bands did seem to be quite chummy
personally, I wasn't floored and didn't hate them overall
definitely better than White Denim I had to suffer through last time though

That we were. The guys from O'Brother were really nice guys too. I remember me and my brother bullshitting with them on the side of the venue for a long time. And when my brother bought they're CD it had a hand written note thanking him for buying it. When I saw them with Thrice two months ago it was the same thing. Really good guys.
As for their performance I really liked it and I think they've just gotten better with time. You can tell that they love what they're doing and I think that adds to my appeal of the band.

Seahaven has also put out one of the best of the year with Winter Forever. I loved their EP, Ghost, and was looking forward to this record a lot. I couldn't be more pleased. With this, and O'Brother's release it's been a pretty good year for debuts.

A lot of people tend to have a problem with the vocals, but I love them. They've changed a little from their EP, but I enjoy the wavering in his voice. It doesn't come out as forced or anything to me. Definately one of those albums that just seems to fit my current mood perfectly.

My dad was telling me about a Pearl Harbor Day tribute he listened to on a conservative radio station today. He said one guy talked about the number of ships and stuff the Japanese had. And he also mention the "hundreds of Kamikaze planes". Seriously? you're going to do a tribute for Pearl Harbor, and you don't even know there was no such thing as Kamikaze's at that time? To make it worse, the guy then said, "and let's not forget about the Midway" (implying that there was a battle ship called Midway that was sunk in the attack, instead of the Arizona). :wallbash:

I was walking into a grocery store tonight, and the Salvation Army bell ringer (not one of the actual SA members, but a volunteer who looked like he probably stayed at the shelter), asked "Excuse me sir, but do you have any smokes?" I thought I had some, so I checked my pockets. Turns out I didn't. I said "Sorry, I don't." Then he said (as he held up a crushed and open pack of menthols) "The reason I asked, is because I'm trying to sell some".

And being that you're a hockey guy you would like that on their last album, 2007's Reunion Tour, they have a spoken word song about Gump Worsley.
He looked more like our fathers
Not a goalie, player, athlete period
Smoke, half-ash, stuck in that permanent smirk.
Tugging jersey around the beer gut
"I'm strictly a whiskey man"
Was one of the sticks he taped up
and gave to a nation of pudgy boys
Favorites from Plympton's list of
objects thrown by Rangers fans:
Soup cans, persimmon, eggs, a folding chair and a dead rabbit
The nervous breakdown of 68 and 69
after Pan Crap flights from LA, the expansion
A shrink told me to change occupations, I had to forget it
He swore he was never afraid of the puck; we believe him
If anyone asks, the inscription should read
"My face was my mask."

I guess I just don't fucking get women's clothes sizes at all.
I'm no fucking psychologist, but it just seems how they size things is wrong.
You would think that they would want to flatter their customers, so an average sized woman could proudly claim that she was a "medium".
And I know some real "large" women. I've yet to see anything at a retail store this year that would fit any of them.
Everything I got my chick and my mother this year has to go back. If my tiny old mother isn't a fucking "medium", then this shit is just wrong.
I honestly worried that it would be too big for her, and almost got her a "small".

Besides sports, I don't watch anything "live" anymore.
My DVR stays full, and almost every night / weekend I have to make an effort to watch some shows to clear some room for new stuff.
Even when I do plan to watch "live" sporting events, I'll record them, and watch something else for an hour or so, so I can FF through the commercials.
I've had the DVR so long now, that I get anxious when I'm watching something that I can't pause or rewind, and sitting through commercials now is just torture.

This makes me really look foward to dinner tomorrow (love ham) and makes me want to go and heat up some ziti from tonight.
And I think the best holiday programming is on he kids network Sprout. It's a "snooze-a-thon" and just shows the characters from all their shows sleeping as they wait for Santa. It's on till 6 am. I may pull an allnighter.
PapaBear
12-24-2011, 09:05 PM
In all honesty, the reason I'm stuffed is because I wasn't sure if there would be leftovers from my bro's Christmas Eve shindig, when I got home from work. So I picked up a sub from Sheetz. When I got home, sure enough, there were leftovers. Scallop/shrimp/beef/pineapple/green pepper kabobs for instance. Not wanting to waste food, I ate the sub, then dug into the leftovers. Topped off with some chocolate covered strawberries from that edible arrangement thing I mentioned in the other "random" thread.
There's barely enough room left for my rum.

It's not a bad time. I just need to adjust. I have the next two days off, so I'm probably going to be even more discombobulated. In any case, I'm starting to (slightly) get my mind in gear now. I'm going to get to work on fixing a laptop. Maybe that will stimulate my mind for now.

I've been thinking about God a lot lately. I guess with Christmas, my kind of crappy health concerns, and general feeling of being lost it makes sense. I started reading that Penn Jillette book and started to question things a lot. I realized the only time I've been to church recently was for a funeral. I haven't had any desire to go, but a part of me misses when I did. I can't really remember the last time I prayed and felt like I wasn't just talking to myself, but I still mutter the "Oh Father" from time to time and run my fingers through rosary beads. Maybe a part of me just wants to believe there's a God? Though, I wouldn't want to worship a God who allows the things that happen happen. And if God just created us and then decided he didn't want anything to do with us anymore then why would I want to worship someone that abandoned us?

Everyone has to find their own religious path yada yada yada but what I would like to say is that I think there is a lot of disconnect because people dont understand the idea of 'mystery' in religion, or atleast christianity. So when you say you dont want to believe there is a god who allows x things to happen, to me you're conceiving god in your own image, because you know what is reasonable for people to do. That's a mistake to me, god is supposed to be wholly incomprehensible. Not even in the way where you understand 'god did this and I dont understand why he did' but like looking at a riddle that's not only in a language you dont speak, but an alphabet you've never seen, and really in things you dont even understand to be letters. Repetative prayer, physical exertion/penance, mysticism and ceremony are all ways that try to shut off the conscious part of your brain so you can experience the completely incomprehensible parts of religion. It's supposed to be a languageless experience. I dont identify as a catholic anymore, and I really have no interest in spreading what I believe around to other people, but for what it's worth I think this is a greatly neglected aspect of the contempory christian experience.

What sucks balls is my making a stupid decision to try to save a few bucks tonight. My old battery had a 7 year warranty. The Autozone guy asked if I wanted the same one. Instead, I picked the one year battery. The 7 year was only $15 more, but I figured "fuck... the car won't last another 7 years".
After I installed it, I did the math. My 7 year battery was 6 years old. They gave me an $18 credit on it even after all that time. I saved more than what the difference is between the two batteries. If my new one only lasts a couple of years, I'll have ended up losing much more. :wallbash:

Arlington County, VA is less than 24 hours away from going a whole year murder free. I used to work there, so I know how VERY different it is than DC. But damn... It's just across the freaking Potomac! I live practically in the sticks, 75 miles from DC, and we have more murders HERE than Arlington.

They won today. But I've started drinking. I guess I'm drinking absinthe the pussy way mixing it with coke. It's more green than whatever color coke is. I missed this stuff.

he first time I had absinthe I had Lucid and did shots. I know you're supposed to have a special spoon and pour sugar and be owed by the process or something. But I'm having American absinthe so fuck it. Actually, Italian absinthe, but with American laws in place.
And the last time I had it I had it with coke withmy brother. We were taking the path train into the city to see The Mountain Goats and took swigs from a two liter bottle of coke (mostly absinthe). Great times.
Great times right now. Love alcohol that's 100 proof.

OK... This is just ridiculous. My nowhere county managed to make it less than an hour and ten minutes into 2012 before it had it's first murder. A 27 year old shot and killed another 27 year old, presumably at a redneck New Years party.

I watched a movie last night called Red Road, and today Major League was on, and in both movies a girl has sex with a guy and then goes to leave right after and the guy in each movie goes "Wait, where are you going?" instead of just thinking "Awesome" and actually sleeping comfortably.

My house is cold. I'm drinking 30 case of MGD. I'm hoping to at least break the half way point. I'm on my third in 10 minutes and listening to The Horible Crowes Elsie. It fits.
Happy new years.

I told my wife she was being annoying. She said "no I'm not".
I explained to her that you don't get to decide whether you're being annoying or not. Others do. You can decide not to care if you like. But you don't get to decide whether you are.

Two different currencies. One is a solid, asset-based currency for transactions of tangible goods, the other is some imaginary, sorta open source, popular currency for use in the service sector. We'll call them Upshaws.
I haven't fleshed this out entirely.

Yes. I'm sure it's not that. I don't view animal porn. I just produce it. But I am very worried about my son. If you see anyone with the tattoo in my avatar, please let me know.
I've been very cryptic with a lot of stuff lately, but I'm losing patience with the "system". I'm on the verge of going all out and asking people for help finding him. Stay tuned.
And, no... This is not a protected forum. So no one will get banned for saying anything insensitive.

I couldn't sleep last night either. At the time that you were using your insomnia to retrofit the world economy, I was watching re-runs of Little Bear on NickJR and thinking how nice it would be to JUST GET A LITTLE FUCKING SLEEP BEFORE DAWN FOR CHRIST FUCKING SAKE!!! JUST TEN FUCKING MINUTES!!! IS THAT SO MUCH TO FUCKING ASK???
And then I'd cry. Just a little.

We actually got that lake effect snow from the Great Lakes down here today. This rarely happens. It was only two inches of snow, but it was the slipperiest two inches of snow I've ever experienced. There were crashes and jackknifed trucks EVERYWHERE.
Separate thought... I've had late night Internet problems the past couple of nights. It's really difficult to tell if my Internet is slow, or if it's just rf.net being slow. GRRRR!!! Time to do a speed test.
