Went to breakfast with some coworkers. They wanted to leave a 6% tip. I had to fight to bring it up to 11%. If I had extra cash I'd have just left it there. I een tried to pay with my card and put a decent tip, but someone had zero cash and had to put it on their card. Just really uncomfortable.

Troc in Philly is a great venue, and as far as I know still going strong. I saw quite a few bands there, TLA and other venues in Philly.
The Troc actually went bankrupt this year because of ticketmaster making it impossible for them to make any money. They've switched to ticketfly and are booking more stuff, especially more non music events like standup/spoken word.
Unfortunately R5, the big indie booking company in the city, opened their own Troc rival venue in a much less convenient location. If you've ever been to the First Unitarian Church R5 barely books into there anymore either, because they have a bunch of bars they use. Basically if they know they can sell out the church they'll book there, if they think they cant they'll use one of the bars which are also more shittily located.
It's still a great venue, though. My favorite.

so my older sister used to work with me. she was in town this weekend and some of the coworkers asked to see the kids. i brought them upstairs for a quick hello before they started the drive home.
so my niece, who is funny in a mean and smart assed way, knows all about what a cranky ass my cubemate is. so cubemate sees me coming in with them and rolls her eyes, huffs, and pushes past us in a "im too busy for this nonsense" way. my niece gives me a "wtf" look and asks in a purposefully loud voice, "why does [cubemate] always act like someone pissed in her cheerios? she's always so damned cranky and rude!"

Two things about poeple that post pictures places. First, if you've got a really young baby he looks like he's depressed. He looks like a serious little man that hates his job. Dont post pictures of your kids until they're old enough to smile.
Second, if you're the kind of person that needs to post pictures of the food they're eating, give it a break if you're in a Red Robin or similar establishment. This is not the kind of food that other people are interested in seeing.

I don't know what kind of tree it is. I think all the trees there have been there for a very long time. We also have three large trees down in my yard. One of them is a crabapple tree that's split right down the middle. We've had that tree since I was a kid. My friends and I used to pick the crabapples to throw at the ice cream truck.

Here's my point. The people who make statements like this are criticizing business, in this case movie studios, for having a risk averse business model. At the same time they're saying that they wont do something unless there is little risk of backlash.
Artists used to literally starve for their art and eventually a lot of that art proved out and was successful, even if posthumeously. If you could pull off something as good as Blazing Saddles it will still find its' audience.

The Frank Ocean thing is interesting to me because you have Odd Future, that got all kinds of guff for being homophobic (besides misogynist, drug addled and violent) meanwhile they now have two out members.
I guess I think it's interesting because the post modernists are being out post modernized by these young kids, who seemingly can throw around a lot of language about murdering chicks and gay slur this racial slur that and really truly have it not mean anything. It's all just about the swag. So in that respect maybe they're saying 'Well lets pay more attention to what we mean instead of what we say.' Which isn't a terrible thing, and actually maybe a bit more modernist.
I like that you're gonna have Teagan and Sara on one side calling out a group like Odd Future for the stuff they say, and then Odd Future continuing to do what they do. Reaction is good, arguing is good. I dont think Odd Future is ever gonna come out and say we're expressing this suburban nihilism with this language, and illustrating that by previous generations pushing boundaries you've kindof fucked these new kids up, because the desire to be rebellious still exists and you've just made it harder to rebel, therefore they're going to do more egregious things. Because if they did vocalize it like they they're kindof self defeating their point. But I hope someones thinking abotu it anyway.

WINCHESTER — Two men allegedly used baseball bats in a robbery at America’s Best Value Inn over the weekend.
According to a search warrant filed Monday in Winchester Circuit Court, two men — one of whom was arrested Saturday — entered the victims’ room at the America’s Best Value Inn, 1347 Berryville Ave. in Winchester, at about 2:30 a.m.
One of the men also stated that he had a gun, according to the warrant.

Traffic was stopped on I-10 around 6:00 a.m. this morning because there was an owl sitting (standing?) in the right lane. At that time, the sun was barely up. Which made me wonder...
How the hell did the first person see it in time to stop? Did they see it landing / flying down to the road?
How the hell did the person behind them not hit the first person suddenly stopping on a 4-lane stretch of interstate where everyone routinely exceeds 70 mph every morning?
Why, by the time that we came along, was it STILL just sitting there, with cars moving past fairly close by in the left lane? Had to be sick, or injured, right?
If I had known what the cause of the back-up was, I would have paid more attention to more details. After we stopped, all my chick could see was that there was a vehicle stopped in the right lane, and we needed to merge over to get around. I didn't see the owl until we got in front of the first car, so I didn't get the tag of the car that had stopped traffic for it. I'd be curious to know if it was someone from this state. I always assumed, by the amount of road kill all over down here, that none of these sumbitches ever stop for any "critter". I also didn't pay attn to see if there were any skid marks, etc.
All I know is that whenever I have to stop on the interstate, my instinct is to watch the vehicles behind me to make sure they're going to stop, or if I need to bolt for the shoulder to avoid getting rear-ended. I had put my flashers on, so the guy behind me stopped well short. But soon after there was the awful sound of tires skreetching behind us, and an 18-wheeler going off on the shoulder trying to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him, and that was only 4 or 5 cars back.
My chick was all "Awwww" when she saw the owl. I made the mistake of wondering out loud if she thought the truck driver that hit the ditch was going to feel the same way when he saw what almost caused him to wreck.
The guy that works for me comes in a few hours after I do, and he said it was still backed up when he came up on that area, but he didn't see any owl.
I'm kinda hoping this makes the news tonight so I can find out wtf happened, and if the thing survived after all the fuss and the person(s) who put themselves and their vehicles in danger to try to save it.

If it was facing traffic, I would think an owl's eyes would be as easy (probably easier) to see in your headlights, as a deer's.

It seems like it would have been easy enough to punt the thing out into the woods and free up the road.

Probably. Though I wonder if I would have realized it in time. It was pretty damn early in the morning, and I'm not sure how close I would have to have gotten before I realized what those two small glowing things 2 feet off the ground were, and still had time to stop.
This, coming from the guy who ran over a six foot step ladder lying in the road a few years ago. I saw "something"... but I guess I assumed that other people had been driving over whatever it was (cardboard box?), and I didn't make it out to be a ladder until it was too late.
I hit it at around 45 mph, and the fucking thing knocked out my fuel guage. I filled up based on a trip odometer for the last few years before I finally gave that car away.

I guess it all depends on what people are used to in a given area. Around here, deer are a big problem. You see two glowing dots, and you immediately prepare to stop. And this is why I fucking HATE people who live on rural roads, and put two little bicycle reflectors at the end of their driveway.

By the time we came upon it, the first car was still blocking the right lane, and there was a white pickup on the shoulder. They were shaking hands, and at least two of them were putting on reflective vests. I don't remember seeing any markings on the truck, and not sure how long they had been out there, of whether this was someone they had called, or just another commuter who stopped, who happened to carry emergency gear.
I'm pretty sure it was people gawking at the scene blocking the left lane that was causing the backup that I ended up in.
And, yeah, no one was even attempting to approach the bird, or trying to get it to move. It was just sitting there watching us go by when we passed.

When I lived on a rural road, I had a big stuffed deer with glowing eyes at the end of the driveway so people could find my house.

Sure, we have deer here too, but a deer is a lot bigger than an owl.
I see eyes all the time, but that low to the ground, I would have probably assumed it was a cat or dog that will move the hell out of the way before I get there. Second thought probably would have been opossum or armadillo, and I'm not sure I would have locked 'em up for those if I couldn't change lanes.
Hell, I've come up on a fucking COW in the middle of the road down here (late at night, and in pretty heavy fog... another close call), and almost hit a couple of horses that were loose and running alongside the road in the ditch.
I guess that's my point. A lot of shit probably would have been running through my head. The last thing I would have thought (before now) was that it might be an owl that is either sick, injured, or just too fucking stupid to get out of the way.

I might have stopped on the side of the road, and maybe tried to push it out of the way. But there's no way I would have just stopped and blocked that lane that time of morning, and put myself and my car between it and oncoming morning commuter traffic. Whomever it was, was braver than I would have been.
If I had hit that thing, or just left it to get hit by the next vehicle, with my chick and daughter in the car? I wouldn't have been laid for a month.
Hell, she makes me stop to move turtles out of the road.
They'd have cried if I had killed something like this.

A C-17 transport plane just landed at the tiny public airport on Davis Islands mistakenly thinking it was a runway at MacDill AFB. Both runways are marked 22, never mind that the runway he landed on is across Hillsborough Bay from MacDill, four times smaller and not surrounded by an Air Force base.

People really love to post on local news stories how they were involved. Some old broad ran over a cyclist, or there was a fatal wreck, etc, and the facebook app posts at the bottom of the page are loaded with people saying stuff like:
"I was driving by the accident on the way home from work. It looked horrible."
"I was walking on that road 20 minutes before it happened. It could have been me!"
"This happened right up the street from my house."
These posts somehow satisfy the needs of the poster to have some sort of fame. Then there are the fake sympathy posts, were people post things like:
"OMG, I feel so bad for the family."
"I feel sick reading about this."
"I can't imagine what they must be going through."
These are fake sympathy posts because the emotion of feeling bad for someone who had some sort of misfortune is a normal thing that the majority of people feel and does not need to be said. The only reason to say something that everyone is feeling is to attach oneself to the story and act like one is somehow more sympathetic than the average person. On top of that, you'll notice that my hypothetical posts all focus on the emotions of the poster, not the victims. "I feel terrible" If they were really posting something to somehow give support to the victims of terrible circumstance, the posts would look more like this:
"The family must feel terrible."
I don't think these people realize why they are posting things like this, but it makes them look like dopes to highly-skilled psychologists such as myself. I feel terrible for them.

Don't ever buy a coffee grinder with a stainless steel liner. I think this thing had some kind of sticker that talked about how the metal liner protects the coffee from overheating during grinding. As though the slight heat generated by friction with a plastic liner during grinding would somehow be enough to change the flavor of the coffee. Anyway, this thing generates static electricity and half the grounds stick the metal liner when you dry and dump them into the coffee maker. Through the magic of static electricity, somehow there are always coffee grounds all over the counter because of this.

Outback Steakhouse, purveyor of "Australian-themed" food, is bull-ass. It is possibly worse than any of the other frozen food chainlets due to the Australian theme, but now they have compounded it by putting out these awful commercials with a terrible fake aussie accented announcer:
