Don Banks calls Brett Favre out in his column on today's games:

Time for my weekly Brett Favre "broken ankle'' observation. Did you notice Favre after he chucked that 53-yard touchdown pass to Percy Harvin in the second quarter? He went jumping around in celebration and eventually threw a flying chest-bump at tight end Jeff Dugan, knocking him to the ground.
Yeah. I think the ankle's OK, folks. But his game is back in rough shape. Favre had a four-turnover showing in the loss to the Bears (three interceptions and one fumble), and now the Vikings (3-6) could really start to unravel as their games become somewhat meaningless from this point forward.

I never want to hear how good the Giants are again.

you won't from ME. I never ever said the Giants are as good as all the other columnists said ect. I want to wait until the end of this Month before i even think to say "Giants have a good team this year"
I saw 6-2 go to 8-8 last year. If we do it again GET RID OF ELI MANNING!
First off when you are on the two yard line you don't throw the ball you give it to the 275 lbs. back who can punch it in!
You don't throw over your receivers heads time and time again! The only times Eli threw in the numbers was when they were covered.
His 2nd INT was sad. He throws right to the defenders. Manningham was in double coverage!
Nice Penalty to take the TD away and kill the momentum....DICK!
The Eagles are going to eat us alive next week.
I am SO fucking sick of hearing how great the Giants are then watch them go down the toilet. They were nothing like the team that played last week. I want THAT team back!

I get being pissed after losing to the lowly Cowboys, but I have no idea how your first point is Eli's fault.

Shouldn't that be a Kevin Gilbride/Tom Coughlin thing?

No.
Eli, after 6 seasons, still has NO idea about clock management.
Look at his passes. He never can throw into the numbers. That is what makes him worse then Tom Brady or his brother, Peyton. He RARELY throws in the numbers. It's over the heads. He can't recover from being knocked around in the first half. He throws in double and triple coverage all the time.

Oh don't get me wrong....Coughlin is the head coach and if we go 6-2 to 8-8 or worse again this year, I say fire him. Because if that happens it just means the team quit on him.

We lost to a team that has no right playling for a playoff spot they will never get and a back QB that hasn't started with a team in 3 years. We never played any pressure D or pass rush.

What I watched tonight disgusted me.

Just to see who's keeping track, the Bears have beaten the Cowboys in Dallas WITH Romo, beat Aaron Rodgers and the Pack once and just sent Brett Favre packing.

And I say that to point out how silly the NFL is. Are the Bears suddenly better than the Pack and the Giants? No, of course not. But is Eli Manning better than sliced bread and Jay Cutler a buffoon? Nope. Cutler had a good day today.

Don't sleep on the Bears.

Something I saw today (I think in the Bengals game) makes me wonder something. Both teams were fighting over the ball. Not only had the whistle been blown, but the ref signaled that the ball belonged to the offense. But for at least 45 seconds, the defense was still trying to get the ball.

Why don't the refs call a delay of game penalty on the defense when this happens?

Lets face it, Cutler isn't special. He's a slightly above average skilled NFL QB and will never be a Top 5 kind of guy. Even in his good days like today, it still comes with 2 INTs.

His skill set is fine, but his decision making is generally shitty as he's over-confident in his arm (like Favre, who got away with it because he was special).

Joe Namath is in the Hall of Fame because he popped his mouth off like a dumbass while he was shitfaced drunk (I'm assuming from what we learned later) by the pool before the Super Bowl, and managed, somehow, to back it up. If the Colts had hammered the Jets in Super Bowl III, no way in hell he gets in.

Besides, the role of Super Bowl III in cementing the NFL/AFL merger is kind of overrated. Obviously, it finished the job, but I think that even if the Colts had won, that would have just meant that things would have been pushed back a year or so. The AFL was already almost caught up in terms of quality to the NFL, and it's not like Roselle, Hunt, and the boys would have said "You know, fuck it, this isn't working" if the Jets had lost.

I got a sawbuck that says that Shanahan is gone next season. Hell, I might pay 2-1 if he leaves by the end of the year.

I think that the "McNabb can't learn the playbook" thing was leaked by Shanahan to try to lay the groundwork for benching him, and now Lil' Danny Snyder has completely cut him off at the knees.

My guess is Lil' Danny got pissed that Shanahan was taking too much power over the team and wanted to reassert him. He's like a much shorter, much stupider, much less well-tempered Steinbrenner, except that he's got that hard NFL cap to deal with.

On Monday, Donovan McNabb and Washington reached agreement on a five-year contract. On Tuesday, the deal's details became public, through a source at the NFL Players Association. McNabb's five-year extension is worth $70 million and can get to $78.5 million if he is on the active roster for every game in those five seasons. The deal's maximum value is $88.5 million if McNabb leads his team to a Super Bowl victory every year.

But the real question is how much he'll actually earn and whether it will be in Washington.

One of the contract's most significant points is a payment due this offseason, when the Redskins must decide whether or not to pay McNabb a $10 million option bonus. If they do, it would trigger the rest of the contract and make Washington liable for McNabb's $2.5 million base salary in 2011.

So in essence, the Redskins paid McNabb $3.75 million in 2010 for the right to pay him $12.5 million in 2011 and control his rights. If the Redskins cut him after this season or trade him, they are only on the hook for the $3.75 million.

Boiled down, the deal's real guarantee is $3.5 million, though if McNabb suffered a catastrophic injury this season and never played again, he would receive $25 more million.

Here is how the rest of the full deal breaks down, according to an NFLPA source:

• 2010: $3.5 million signing bonus/$250,000 if active eight games

• 2011: $10 million option bonus/$2.5 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2012: $12.75 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2013: $13 million salary/$1.5 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2014: $13.75 million salary/$3 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2015: $13.55 million salary/$2.25 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

While i'm not sure Mcnabb is worth all that, the Skins gave up two draft picks in two consecutive years to a division rival to get him. they'd be nuts to not lock him up.

So it looks like McNabb's "guaranteed" money isn't quite as guaranteed as it sounded at first.

It turns out the $40 million he is supposed to be guaranteed in his new contract could turn out to be a mere $3.5 million.
McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, clarified some of the details of McNabb's deal Tuesday. He says while the contract is worded so that it has "$40 million in guarantees," the Redskins do have an option to cut McNabb at the end of the season with no further money due.
McNabb has been given $3.5 million this year as part of the new contract, but the rest of the five-year, $78 million package would come to naught if the team decides to cut ties.

as I've said before and will say again: the primary reason why Norv, Phillips, etc. still have their jobs is because 1) the lockout is looming 2) all the coaches have contracts 3) the coaches are not part of the player's union and thus get paid anyway, lockout or not.

Childress will keep his job because he's under contract to 2013, and everyone else will keep their job until the end of the season because there's no reason to double-up on paying coaches.

Yah, well so much for Phillips and Norv was given the extension going INTO this season after yet another coaching debacle in the playoffs. Try again.

spoon
11-16-2010, 01:45 PM
Jeff Fisher was a D coordinator for one of the most dominant defense in football history. And even then it took awhile to get a head coaching job....which he still has. He took his team to the bowl and routinely gets them to overachieve.

Bellichick went from head coach in Cleveland, where he made the playoffs but didnt really do anything else, right back to being a D coordinator again for a long time before he got another shot, then he made it count.

Bill Parcells won the Super Bowl in his 4th year of head coach.

None of these guys can be compared to coaches like Wade Phillips, Norv Turner, Dave Wandstedt, etc. that received head coach jobs after head coach jobs without ever winning shit. Their teams wind up going in the toilet, they get fired, then get hired for another head coaching job somewhere else. Any GM that takes guys like this deserve to watch their team go down in flames. If the choice is between them and a coordinator looking to move up and make a name for himself, I take the coordinator every time.

I agree on all of this and will add that GM's/owners who do select the likes of the Turners and Phillips of the world are those who want to maintain total control and or constantly interfere with the process. AJ Smith and Jerry Jones surely fit the profile too.

Jeff Fishers W-L in the last ten years:
2000 13 3
2001 7 9
2002 11 5
2003 12 4
2004 5 11
2005 4 12
2006 8 8
2007 10 6
2008 13 3

The three years highlighted are worthy of him being fired. especially in two years when you go 9-23. I think many times (not all though) it's the Teams and not just the coach.

Bellicheck in Cleveland:
1991 6 10
1992 7 9
1993 7 9
1994 11 5
1995 5 11

ONE good year. Goes back to D coordinator and then finds another hear coaching job where he is one of the best in the game now.

Parcells....ok yes he is a proven winner as a head coach with every team he has been with. Took every single one of them to the Playoffs or their championship games after they were just outright laughable as a team. (Giants, Jets and Pats)

But the other two? They compare very nicely. Hell in 2005 Fisher had a "Wade Phillips" style season and no one would have been surprised if he got fired. But they stuck with him. So no...sometimes I am not surprised if they get second chances. and not only that, there is always college. Look at Carroll. Sucks as an NFL coach. Genius in the college level.

totally disagree with you on Carroll. He was a solid head coach who was the scapegoat and never given a chance. Now hes back in the NFL and in his 1st season he is making sea look respectable while having his 1st and 2nd string qbs go down and no rbs or wrs that have ever done anything.

As for Fisher, he is very lucky they didnt fire him after 3 straight shit seasons. But I think coaches today dont get the chance to turn things around. I liked it better when coaches like Landry, Shula, Noll etc stayed with their teams for 20 + seasons. How can you not respect guys like Reid, Fisher, Cowher who have done what they have done in this current NFL climate and have been able to win enough to keep their jobs. I know some philly fans dont love Reid but I do. You know with him you have a chance every year. 1 or 2 more right decisions and you are winning a title.

That has been Miamis problem since Shula and Jimmy Left. The musical chairs at qb and coach never give a team time to have structure and an identity. The funny thing is I actually hope Sporano is fired and they go after Gruden or maybe even Cowher.

The teams one inherits surely has an effect on their win/loss total as well. Let's be honest, Turner has underachieved and isn't a good coach. I can promise you that if Schottenheimer was still there, they would have accomplished much more in my mind but AJ couldn't "work" with him (which means AJ wanted total control).

Bottom line, do you rip apart Detroit's coach right now bc they aren't winning, or do you see advancement in the face of long term futility and constant injury? Or is Turner great bc he's probably going to sneak in another AFC West title bc the division always comes back to them?

Can a guy at times walk into shitty situations and or falter in their first shot at HC? Sure, but we're talking about guys here that surely have had their fair share and have a history of not having the ability.

Is it just because the Redskins have always been my team that it seems they make more bonehead moves than any other team in the league? Or are they about par with all the other teams? I have radar for any Redskin news but not so much for other teams.

I just want a team to be built with guys who play for years together (via the draft) and not the veteran trades that they always seem to do. I bet (without doing research) that they have traded away more draft picks than any other team the past 10 -15 years. Ironically, they only have 1 playoff win in that span as well. We'll see. I'm telling you, the Bears are getting better. They took the bye week, Martz has changed some things offensively to give the O Line a chance. He's notoriously stubborn, so this is a good sign. The line is healthy for the first time, and the defense is still top 10.

You have to remember how much of a beating QBs take in that offense. Warner got the shit beat out of him by the end in St. Louis. Plus, I think Martz is over rated as a coordinator. Sure he won with the Rams - with Faulk, Holt, Bruce and who knew how good Warner would be. Martz hasn't really done much since.

Like I said, we'll see. But they should beat the Dolphins on tomorrow, although that's a stupid thing to say in today's NFL. But if they do - and the Vikings can pull it together enough to beat the Pack this weekend - then the Bears are 2 games up in the division and basically assured a playoff spot.

Honestly, before last week I didnt believe the Giants were nearly as good as people were saying they were. I also dont think they are as bad as they looked against the Cowboys. I think that game just happened to be a wrong place / wrong time game for them.

The Eagles are seriously getting better every week. This week didnt impress me as much as some because I thought they were gonna kick the shit out of the Skins that game since they lost the first game to Washington in week 5. But the game that did impress me was against the Colts. Injuries or not, they are a tough team to beat, and the Eagles were seriously taking it to them. The only reason the game was even that close was due to some terrible officiating.

Last weeks game was something else (wacky) we are down to the 3rd QB. But the guys good look at the season he had with KC. So much so I picked him up on fantasy the next season not knowing he wasn't starting. There was about 2-3 min left in the third quarter when the guy was coming in. But the Dolphins bought time with the wildcat to get to the forth quarter. In which Brandon Marshall threw a perfect spiral about forty yards.

Before this the offence changed up things with no back sets that seemed to work. So more of this stuff may be coming.

Also on defence one of the better players Wake is hurt. He had 9 sacks in the first 8 games. The guy filling in had a good game. He had an INT followed with a sack.

Hope it's a good game. I have time off to stay up and watch it.

The Eagles have a history, like the Chargers, of taking off towards the end of the season.
Giants aren't as bad as they looked, I agree, but I still have reservations about calling them the BEST in the NFC.

really? YOU calling someone ELSE a child? How in the world would someone like YOU know what having an adult conversation is all about?
I told you...I know that you can't hold a serious discussion with anyone. You can't take ball busting...period. You are the one who tried to convince people that DWTS is cool. And guess what...you're laughed almost right out of this thread.

As for the Giants reply....I'm not going to get dragged into a 'adult discussion' when the other person can't even try to see things from my perspective. You are the one who likes to go down to the lowest-common denominator and call people "idiots" and actually say "I'm right about everything"

Keep googling and posting on your mom's bandwith and try to act all tough. I am sure it's a hit with the ladies.

30 seconds too much and go to a game and you CONSTANTLY have to deal with him. God forbid you give him a healthy ribbing too, as we saw with the Giant fan. He gets constant airtime now too, including commercials, intros, segues and even fucking INTERVIEWS!?

I was coming here to say the same thing. he is one of the many reasons to hate fireman/cops. they act like they own the joint and use their public service jobs as a way to say "we deserve to get away with whatever we do because we are heros".

I say blow me!

I would love to see the game stopped because he fell backwards and cracked his head. They shouldnt allow his miserable ass to stand on anything at a game. But the security and cops have always let him get away with it because he is a fireman. Anyone else who tried to do that would be thrown out of the stadium.

Funny thing is most Jets fans I know think he is a douche and people who have met him say the same thing. They also say he acts like some sort of celeb, entitled asshole! NJ.com wrote an article when he was arrested early this year and every single comment on their page was shitting on him!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of Ed but every team has their overentitled "superfans". Ed gets a little more pub because he leads the J-E-T-S chant.

The Giants have those two attention whores (one who claimed she got kicked out for having large breasts a few years ago) and Oakland has the dude that dresses as Vader. Eagles has that guy in the Eagles outfit. Comparatively speaking, Ed's outfit is pretty harmless.

I don't know anything of him personally so I can't say much there. However, the very act of wearing your service to the game for recognition seemingly says a lot. I guess the whole baby act he displayed at the opener with that Giant's fan really put me over the edge on him. If he was a cooler guy, he would have had some fun with the guy versus what he did. He was just as you stated, some entitled douche with WAY too much airtime.

It's less the fact that they have an outfit versus what it is and where it comes from. Of course all teams have their characters and surely idiots at games, but not all are such arrogant dicks about it. In fact, most actually get on tv and make fun of themselves and laugh it up.

Also, the Jets have all but made him a official unofficial mascot of late. We all know his psl was covered and probably more, so it's not fair to just compare him to a local schlub having a little fun at the game. This IS his life it seems.

i hate this team and how lucky they get. awful coaching by houston awful decisions. go for the td not the fg, play fucking football. then they play prevent defense the entire last series.

4th and goal from the 4 up 1 late, you have to kick the fg. if they went for it, failed (likely) and then lost to a fg they'd be rightfully vilified. they put the jets in a spot to need a td to win. if you have problems with their defensive calls, that's another point.

Wow where did all the late points come from for BUF Vs CIN?

i disagree, if you dont score you pin them back on their own 4. yes they need a fg rather then a td to beat you but its harder to start a possession from your own 4 and no time outs because that close to your own end zone you have to play the middle of the field not the sidelines. also if you go for it you might score the td.

then add the prevent defense and you have another terrible coaching performance against the jets. this team should be 3-7 or 4-6 but give them credit they are taking advantage of other shitty coaches mistakes.

No way snacks. I can see a pass or two in there, but you kick that fg no questions.

I know you're a Jets hater, but luck can only take you so far when you're on your own 30 with less than a minute and no timeouts.

Luck is a ball hitting a cross bar and going over. Luck is a tipped pass that's caught. EXECUTION is what Sanchez to Edwards was. End of story.

This is really a fucking retarded statement. They took the chip shot FG to make the jets score a TD rather than a FG.

On average, law of averages, the yardage to get a TD is MORE than the yardage needed to get a FG. Thus then, YOU GO FOR THE FG, especially when there's less than a minute left and no timeouts.

You just want the Jets to lose so much you're becoming blind to basic football strategy.

I only said toss the td to johnson cause I could use the fantasy points. HOU played it right. NYJ got a few late breaks. But not huge ones like the past few weeks.

Wow, what a shocker, Vince Young melted down after the game today:

Vince Young is no longer the Titans starting quarterback after he abruptly left LP Field following Tennessee's 19-16 overtime loss to Washington today, Coach Jeff Fisher said.

Young, who had been booed in the first half and left the game in the second half because of a thumb injury, tossed his shoulder pads into the stands as he left the field.

Minutes later he emerged from the locker room dressed in street clothes and headed up a ramp to the players' parking lot. Safety Michael Griffin, wearing only a pair of shorts, ran out of the locker room and chased Young, who brushed him off and continued out of the stadium.

He seems to have the potential to be a great QB in the league, but it's harmed by the fact that he is a complete dumbass and baby.

I was not able to watch it but they kept updating the scores and highlights. Should they have let it get to the last play to win it, weren't they UP by 17 points going into the 4th qtr?

I love how bad Cincy blew a (28-7 early second) 31-14 lead at the half to BUFFALO! It's now 42-31!

Spoon, Buffalo isn't really THAT bad of a team. I knew they wouldn't go 0-16. But it looked like a good comeback by Buffalo. Then again I don't know if it's a testament to the will of Buffalo or how the spiral downward of Cincy continues.

Damnit...another Manning INT leads to a loss. Who'd a thunk it would have come from Peyton this time!

Shonn Greene basically fumbled the football for a TD (not really, but they scored on the next play after the turnover), Jets lost all momentum after that to let the Texans get back in the game.
