I doubt it. Hes not a guy who was given a Head coaching job and it didnt work out after 2 or 3 years and will take any job. Hes a 17 year head coach who will probably sit back and wait for the right job. Hes highly respected so he will probably get tv work until he makes his decision!
I agree. Personally I think he'll take this year off and join a tv crew somewhere only to take his pick on some HUGE jobs in the coming years (NYG, Miami, SD and more). Most likely he'll want back in a year, but we'll see.

Yeah, I agree, Fisher would only come back for another head coaching job, not a coordinator position. And we still have to see if they'll even *be* a 2011 season, remember. The CBA is not a done deal by any means.

Yea, I can't see Jeff Fisher coming back for a coordinator job. That's just crazy talk.

I always really liked Fisher, I think he's an excellent head coach. I was listening to Eddie George this morning on Mad Dog Radio, he called Young a coach killer and was a little critical of his behavior. I think Tennessee is making a mistake tying their fotune to Young. They should have started a rebuild project with Fisher and a young QB as the main players.

The Titans are going to be a mess. First Bud Adams makes a statement that he won't eat Young's contract when he was suspended (or made to stand in a corner, however you want to classify it), then he listens to the front office and coaching staff members by saying that Young will be gone by next season and now fires Fisher.
They were 5-2 at one point if I'm not mistaken and looked at as a possible division winner at the time. Then it all blew up. Young is an immature dope (remember the Wunderlick score?) and is going to 'win' this battle.
No shock with Adams, though. He moves the team out of Houston and they were a joke for two years, playing in a college stadium as the Tenn. Oilers before they had a makeover.

and they were 0-8 the year before until Young took back his starting job that he lost the previous season due to a benching by Fisher and finished the season 8-8

Even though Fisher was a good coach it was time. In 17 seasons he only made the playoffs 6 times, thats not a lot. He was lucky he didnt get fired during their 2009 season.

It's just odd because it really did appear that Jeff Fisher had won the power struggle for control of the team, and Bud Adams was on his side, after it was announced they'd get rid of Vince Young.
I guess Bud decided they both suck.

I've seen it done in business when the power struggle ends up with both parties being kicked off the island...but I think Adams erred in shitcanning Fisher.

Well there always is a possibility a team can make a dump and sign if they line Fisher up. I doubt it bc the teams with shitty coaches hanging on either won't dump their coach (SD & Dallas now) or he wouldn't go there probably (Cincy).

I don't have much info outside of what was written, but the choice seems off for such a high level position. Not to mention the OL was AWFUL last year in Philly. I get they didn't have much to work with, but they WERE/ARE pros and schemes can be devised to max protect ONCE in a while for your top play-maker's life.

Jesus Christ, the Redskins are owned by an asshole.
Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has sued Washington City Paper over a column he says defamed him and had anti-Semitic references.
Snyder filed the lawsuit against the weekly paper and its parent company, Atalaya Capital management LP, in New York State Supreme Court on Wednesday. The suit seeks at least $1 million in damages for each of the two causes of action, plus punitive damages.
The cover story entitled "The Crazy Redskins Fan's Guide to Dan Snyder," has an altered photo of the owner with horns and a beard drawn in pen. The suit claims the weekly newspaper used "lies, half-truths, innuendo and anti-Semitic imagery to smear, malign, defame and slander" Snyder.
The suit also says the newspaper reported Snyder engaged in criminal conduct by "forging names."
Telephone calls to the paper Wednesday night were not immediately returned, but publisher Amy Austin, in a letter to readers posted earlier Wednesday said, "We believe we have the facts right."
In a post on the City Paper's website Wednesday, managing editor Mike Madden asserted the image "is meant to resemble the type of scribbling that teenagers everywhere have been using to deface photos for years," he wrote. "The image of Snyder doesn't look like an 'anti-Semitic caricature' - it looks like a devil."
Snyder will contribute any monetary damages received to groups that assist the homeless, the lawsuit said.

Lil' Danny's lawyer sent this in a letter to the newspaper's publisher:
"Mr. Snyder has more than sufficient means to protect his reputation," said the Nov. 24 letter, which was written by David Donovan, the Redskins' chief operating officer and general counsel, and posted on City Paper's Web site Wednesday afternoon. "We presume that defending such litigation would not be a rational strategy for an investment fund such as yours. Indeed, the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the asset value of the Washington City Paper."
If I'm defending the paper, I immediately hand this letter to the judge as evidence that this is harassment, and an attempt to extort. Judges hate this kind of shit, and it could serve as grounds for a countersuit against Lil' Danny.
Here is the actual article, which really doesn't seem, as far as I can tell, to say anything about Lil' Danny that I haven't seen elsewhere:

Lil' Danny tries to spin this and makes himself look even stupider.
"We were hoping [they'd] apologize, hoping they'd say they were sorry," Snyder told The Washington Post. "All they had to do was apologize and retract their lies."
Aww, poor little boy, such meanies!
He also told a bullshit lie about the article:
Snyder also alleged Friday that the article had questioned the sincerity of his wife's efforts to raise awareness of breast cancer research and prevention.
"You can't call people names, [can't call them] criminals," he told The Post. "You can't make fun of someone's wife and her effort for breast cancer awareness as national spokesperson for the National Football League and as a breast cancer survivor. It's just wrong. What's wrong is wrong, and this is wrong. And this guy [McKenna] crossed the line."
City Paper Editor Michael Schaffer said Snyder was mistaken in his characterization of the article. "I'm a little baffled," he said. "The words 'breast cancer' never appeared anywhere in the story. The idea that we made fun of his wife in any way is inaccurate and a distraction from the real issue. The real issue is that we have our facts right."
The Nov. 19 article includes a comment Tanya Snyder made in a television interview last year, saying her husband has "grown and evolved" and is now surrounded by "better people." Those comments came in the middle of a long interview about her involvement in breast cancer awareness efforts, but the article doesn't mention those activities.
Seriously, if the NFL had a real commissioner, he'd go to Lil' Danny and tell him to drop this shit now, or he'd face more in fines than he'll ever see from this lawsuit.

"Obviously, you have not read some of the history of the Redskins and the name of the team and what it means. You've seen a lot of lawsuits and a lot of victories by the Redskins overcoming those lawsuits. . . . The name [Redskins] is not meant to be offensive whatsoever. I do think that you, for the most part, should avoid having the Super Bowl in a city where the weather could too drastically affect the game, because when the championship is on the line, you want the game to be decided by how the two teams on the field play, not some weather-related fluke.
But you're right -- the sportswriters are whiny bitches about this stuff, and I think the fans would love to see a Super Bowl played in cold weather. A Super Bowl in Lambeau Field would be awesome.

Simmons didn't complain about the cold at all. (or at least, as much as other writers) But he is right - the Super Bowl is about the events and parties leading up to the game, it's part of experience. It's a destination event, and you want to go to a place where you can have fun.
Like it or not, Houston's not a fun city. Indy is not a fun city. Jacksonville is not a fun city. Nobody says "Let's go to Houston for our vacation!"

The problem is, Spoon, that a lot of the starting players go to the Derek Jeter school of answering the media, where they are polite but boring.
The only semi-interesting story I read this week is about how Rodgers' backup sleeps on an air-matresss because he's incredibly cheap. He lives with two other players, and has only spent money on a nice TV, an Xbox, and an air matress.
That's great, and it's an interesting story for 20 seconds, but who gives a fuck about the Packers' 3rd string QB?
Why do you think a lot of media types wanted the Jets in the Super Bowl? Huge amount of sound clips, lots of stories, open access to players, and the specter of some crazy shit happening.

well, you're a packers fan. Can you give me five stories that you've seen that are worthy to be brought up again now? Because usually the human interest stuff is done during the year and brought up again and super bowl time.
As a Jets fan, I know the stories that would have gone national if the Jets won:
1) Sanchez' emergence and his connection to Aiden, a kid with cancer.

Thank you. I have been saying that for years.
And Snyder claims this:

I do think that you, for the most part, should avoid having the Super Bowl in a city where the weather could too drastically affect the game, because when the championship is on the line, you want the game to be decided by how the two teams on the field play, not some weather-related fluke.
But you're right -- the sportswriters are whiny bitches about this stuff, and I think the fans would love to see a Super Bowl played in cold weather. A Super Bowl in Lambeau Field would be awesome.
what about all the reg season and playoff games that are affected by weather
should we just slap a dome on top of every stadium ??

Which to me is why the Conference Championship games are so much better than the Super Bowl: there's a home field advantage at play....the weather conditions are a factor. Every other sport has this to some degree: think of the old Boston Garden, possibly the greatest example of home court/field advantage...or Yankee Stadium in October. What's the Super Bowl? Two weeks of needless hype in a neutral, sterile environment for a bunch of people who care more about partying in warm weather than they do about the game -- and are probably more concerned about who is going to perform at halftime.
A Super Bowl at Lambeau, to try to earn the Lombardi Trophy in the cold weather, would be AMAZING. The best part would be that the place would be packed full of true fans.

I think the reason it's not is because home field advantage can be such a HUGE advantage in football (other sports, not so much). The teams are in separate conferences and don't play the same teams, so there's no fair way to determine who should have the home field advantage.
They could just make the winner of the pro bowl determine which conference gets home field.

outside of their division, they play about the same number of teams in each conference. i think it's split like 6-4. if it's fair enough for the conference championships, it's fair enough for the super bowl.

I don't really care, either way. I root for a team that can play in whatever weather and would benefit from a snow game. I just get why they don't want to have it.
well, you're a packers fan. Can you give me five stories that you've seen that are worthy to be brought up again now? Because usually the human interest stuff is done during the year and brought up again and super bowl time.
That's not my job and that's my point. If they are such great fucking journalists, why aren't they telling us those stories and not the goddamned weather...which won't even be a factor on Sunday!

The interesting story right now IS the weather and how ill-prepared Dallas has been! That's it! McCarthy's a bore, Tomlin's a bore, the only hint of something is the brouhaha about Ben going out on Wednesday and that's it! That's the problem, it's two very boring and very evenly matched teams.
(and I mean boring personality-wise, not boring play-style)
OK. You're at Media day. What do you ask? Media Day has long been regarded as the biggest joke of the Super Bowl Circus.
I mean, what stories are there? You talk about Rodgers battling the spectre of Favre's success? Then people flip out on reporting on Favre. You bring up the Ben rape stuff... again? Clay Matthews steroid whispers? All of it's conjecture.
Pathetic. Just bc your coach is a fat mouthed cunt doesn't mean that makes it interesting. Classic bullshit argument, bc if you don't think there are storylines out there with over 100 players, coaches, huge fan bases and two great football meccas you are nuts. We clearly define interesting in completely different ways. Two head coaches aren't assholes like Rex making it all about himself, waaaaa! They must be bores!

I really miss the home rink advantage in the NHL. Now they are all EXACTLY the same in terms of dimensions and pretty much most everything outside of board give and ice conditions. Back in the day there were some interesting difs throughout the league.

Sanders was quite possibly the best COVER corner in the NFL, much less in his time. He was also one of the best returners in the game and held the record until Hester just passed him. Not to mention he chipped in at WR from time to time and somehow played big roles in MLB as well. It's been a while since we've seen a crossover pro sport athlete. I think the reason its not is because people set these Super Bowl trips up MONTHS in advance. You cant expect the people going to the game to book hotel rooms and airfare for it 2 weeks in advance. Not to mention theres no way the city would be ready to handle the shitstorm heading its way or have all the festivites all set and ready to go.

Actually, the idea I have to make the Pro Bowl interesting falls into the 'ideas-that-will-never-happen' kind of thing.
I say make the H.O.F game the Pro Bowl. START the NFL season with the all-stars taking the field in Canton. Announce the pro-bowl selections like they normally do and then have them take the field in a few months. I mean, odds are some of the guys who play in that game will be seeing Canton during their induction. And since the pro-bowl are guys who play half-hearted so as to not to injure anyone, why not make it a pre-season game.
For me, at least, the H.O.F. game is exciting because it means the start of football.
But like I said. It will never see the light of day.
Other then that, I don't see any way to make the Pro bowl interesting.

Well if it's not interesting what's the point to have it?
This years NHL format was nothing short of retarded. But the skills competition is always fun to watch.
Baseball A.S.G. was always good to have a break in the middle of the season.
Basketball has their skills competition too, and when I was younger (like when Jordan was in his 2nd year as a pro) it was kind of interesting to watch.
Football? Not so much. So I say either do something to make it watchable or just shit-can the whole thing. Just give the names of the 2010 (or whatever year) All-Pro team and they can put that on their resume and not have to show that waste of TV time.

It's not looking good at the negotiations to try to hold off a NFL lockout:
Negotiations to prevent an NFL lockout took a grim turn Thursday with the cancellation of the second day of a planned two-day bargaining session.
"We wish we were negotiating today," NFL Players Association spokesman George Atallah said. "That's all I can say."
There are just three weeks to go before the collective bargaining agreement expires on March 3.
The NFL said it would not comment on CBA meetings at this point. The league did confirm that Commissioner Roger Goodell has canceled an owners' meeting scheduled for next Tuesday in Philadelphia.
The collapse of the talks came as a surprise. The two sides got together Wednesday for the second time in five days, the previous negotiations taking place in Dallas on Saturday before the Super Bowl. Neither Atallah nor NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith would comment on why Thursday's session was called off.

The main sticking point seems to be rookie salaries:
The union sent a memo Thursday to player agents updating the status of discussions on a rookie wage scale. A union proposal to decrease the maximum length of rookie contracts to four years for players selected in the first three rounds, and three years for players chosen after that, also included a limit on financial incentives and salary escalators that could be included in rookie deals.
Those limits would, the NFLPA claims, provide the cost certainty the league is seeking for its rookie salary pool.
According to the memo seen by The Associated Press, the NFL's response was a five-year wage scale with base salary escalators. That would virtually eliminate individual negotiation of rookie contracts.
Owners opted out of the current CBA in 2008 and are seeking a bigger cut of the league's revenues, which are roughly $9 billion, as well as the rookie wage scale. They also want to increase the regular season by two games to 18, while dropping two preseason games.
The players are happy with the status quo.
If a lockout goes down, I'm not going to say anything stupid like "I'll never watch football again!" But I do have to say my enthusiasm for it would take a serious blow.

If there is a lockout I hope they play scabs like they did in the 80's. Im not a fan of old boy owners but they have the advantage. They spend the money, they make the players millionaires and they have a right to make more profits then the players do. Right now a 60-40 split in favor of the players isnt fair. The rookie salaries is ridiculous and can hurt teams for years with 1 bad decision or injuries. Then again, non guaranteed contracts isnt fair either.
They both are being bitches but the players need to give a little more to get this done. 18 game schedule, 50/50 split, increase rosters by 5-7 players, rookie salary cap/scale similar to the NBA, some sort of guarantee on contracts and they will have a deal. Whats so fucking hard?

Actually, not really: football is the least individual of all the sports. About the only position that can really stand out from the crowd is the quarterback (or maybe the running back or wide receivers). You can't even really see their faces under those helmets.
So the lure of football is less about worship of individual players and more the game itself. For the most part, most of the players are interchangeable and could be replaced with very few fans noticing. And the owners know this, and take advantage of it.
Still, though, their demands are ridiculous. I would say they can either have a 50/50 money split, or the 18 game schedule, but not both. Asking for both is just too much.

It won't see the light of day bc it's stupid and extremely risky. Not only will the pro-bowlers be out of shape, but as you said going half speed. Both extremely risky ideas having little to no merit. It just should be announced and have a skills like comp at most. The pro-bowl is a complete waste. Not every sport needs a game, and no sport needs to make it worth something toward the post season. MLB is stupid, the NFL shouldn't follow their lead here at all.

First off, not having it at all is what myself and others have pretty much said for a while. It's worthless unless you're in the media and get a free vacation to Hawaii.
Second off, did you even watch the NHL all-star selections, know how it was run or even the game itself? I doubt it. My guess is you don't/didn't understand the scary change and just called it "retarded". By all-star standards, they did a pretty good job this year versus others. At least the NHL game is an offensive display with little chance of injury compared to the NFL. D is just non-existent minus the goalies making some crazy saves on what seems like a million tough shots (bc of no hitting and light d).
Finally, MLB is the closest thing to a real game of all these exhibitions. It's the most fun to watch by far but having something like an exhibition mean so much toward the post-season is just insane. You are essentially taking a bunch of players from more than a dozen teams in both leagues that have NOTHING on the line bc they are out of the playoffs by then to begin with, let alone a shot at the World Series. It's essentially a game of players who have never played together for an inning or two in just a mess of a game. Most of whom don't give two shits about the outcome.

Agreed with this and most of what has been posted about the NFLPA. To me it's insane that the owners not only want more money, more game (more money again) and have to pay less to rookies/later contracts will in turn be impacted), but won't give shit to the players. How the hell do they think the NFLPA will sign on to that?
The only thing I think should happen this time around is that the rookie scale gets some control to it, and in turn the players finally get guaranteed contracts. These to me are the points that need to be tackled most, with all other issues being less important.
As for Knox's easily replaced, no idividuals theory, couldn't disagree more. I for one would back the NFLPA striking this year bc quite honestly, they should if what is being reported are the reasons for it.
Oh and Tskeet, we ALL know the owners wouldn't put a dime back out to the fans in any shape or form. Prices will go up regardless.

Redskins kick returner Banks stabbed outside D.C. nightclub (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/football/nfl/02/12/redskins.brandon.banks.stabbed.ap/index.html?xid=si_nfl)
Banks received a surface wound to his side that required stitches and was expected to be released Sunday from an area hospital, his agent James Gould said in a statement.
The player's unidentified friend was critically injured and underwent surgery, Gould said.
According to Banks' agent, the friend was attacked first and Banks was injured while coming to his aid. Banks was not implicated in any wrongdoing, Gould said.
"Brandon's immediate concern is for his lifelong friend who is like a brother to him," Gould said. "He would like to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes for him and his lifelong friend."

Side note... The reporting about the Banks stabbing is annoying. Every time they talk about it, they say "stabbed outside a DC nightclub". The only thing the nightclub had to do with the whole thing, is the bouncers got the knife from the assailant, and it was caught on their video. But Banks and his friend hadn't been in the nightclub, so it's not like the normal "stabbed outside a DC nightclub" story. The kind where a fight starts inside a seedy bar, and spills into the street. Shit... The nightclub was an upscale yuppie bar, from what I've seen on the news.

Interesting story about how fucked the Vikings are if there's a lockout:
There aren't many winners in a lockout, but one would cut some teams deeper than others, and the Vikings have a new head coach and a new offensive system. The Vikings also have about a gazillion holes to fill. If this were a normal offseason, they would have access to a record 495 free agents beginning March 4. Zygi's a pretty generous guy, so chances are the Vikings would have filled a few of the bigger holes with some decent players. With the draft as the only way to improve during a lockout, the Vikings go in without a third-round draft pick. That's because Brad Childress threw it away on a 26-day rental on Randy Moss.

As soon as he was released I though Miami might sign him. He played college ball in Miami and the Dolphins need help a TE. Hes only 30, he will probably sign cheap and if he gets healthy he might be a steal!

why is Ryan Mallett falling? I heard his press conference went bad and that he might fall to the 3rd round? I hope he does and Miami grabs him. Even though Im not giving up on Henne I would love if we got Mallett just in case the team gives up on Henne! Mallett is one of the 2 or 3 guys I was hoping Miami was looking at!

I truthfully see Kolb having a much longer/brighter future than Vick, as he's already injury prone and still doesn't play a safe game in any way. Not to mention Kolb is way younger and to me has a pretty good future in the league. We'll see.

I watched Kolb...just don't see it. He does not look confident. He can scramble but I just feel under pressure he just does not have it. As compared to vick...of course kolb has a longer career ahead of him, vick is older and more banged up.
Just wonder if the iggles will franchise vick then trade him for some draft picks..it could happen. To me the big thing with the iggles is defense..they have to improve that line. and stop putting the LB in coverage, Bradley is great but can not cover a TE for the life of him. bradley should be run stop and blizing.
also no matter what the O-line needs to be revamped...they just suck.

Well the CBA is definitely fucking them. Because its rare that you can get a 1 and a 2 for any player anymore, especially a backup. If theres a way for them to fix the spots that need fixing without trading either of them, Id be fine with it, as it seems more and more every year you need 2 quality QBs in this league. But I have no idea what they plan to do or are even able to do with this bullshit lockout looming.

Given his history of injuries lately, I think it's highly unlikely he'll ever get back to that level.
I mean, if I were a NFL GM, I'd sign him, but to a contract with relatively little guaranteed money and a ton of bonuses and incentives. And definitely not long-term, at least at first.

Though there's apparently no agreement yet, it does look like there will be another extension to the CBA by the end of the day.
NFL officials showed up for an 11th day with mediator George Cohen in downtown Washington this morning. "It's worth continuing to talk,'' said NFL lead counsel Jeff Pash as he went into the building. It's thought that NFL officials would meet separately with the mediator first, then the union would meet with him separately, and then there would be a determination if the two sides would agree to a seven- to 10-day extension. Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal reported this morning that the players have agreed to a 10-day extension suggested by Cohen, and now all that stands in the way is the owners okaying it.
The league has one more reason to want to make a deal now, two sources close to the talks say. The owners are desperate to not have U.S. District Judge David Doty supervise this bargaining agreement any longer -- and if the CBA expires, Doty retains control of the legal issues surrounding it. So Doty, unwittingly, has become the fourth major issue in the talks between players and owners. For months, the big three issues have been the owners' desire to have an additional $1 billion exempted from the revenue they share with players, the owners pushing a rookie wage scale, and the owners wanting an 18-game regular-season schedule to boost revenues for both sides.
Clearly now, Doty has emerged as a fourth key point of the talks. And that means it's highly likely the two sides will extend the deadline so talks can continue.

The ruling Underdog linked to above seems to really have changed the dynamic in these talks: now that the owners can't just start spending the money they squirreled away from the TV deals, they might be far less willing to actually do a lockout. So we'll see. I'm trying as best I can be to be hopeful.

It's a big blow no doubt, but I still see the owners really taking their douchey stand regardless. It will have some effect surely, but once the free spending players aren't getting their money after the season would have started, you'll see their normal collapse and the owners win again.
I find it insane that they don't get some semblance of guaranteed contracts and how they treat ex-players is atrocious. I think the Brees/Manning and others (not sure who) ready to be plaintiffs in a suit against the NFL in a work stoppage is awesome and shows great leadership and how much they care about the players in the league. They surely have no money issues and are trying to take the lead if things get worse. Who else would be involved? Anyone know the names? Bc I'd really like to know.
Also, how is it the owners claim a need for new money/away from the players, in an ever growing league financially, in an already uneven split WITHOUT opening their own books? The fucking Maras (Tim, Jack & Wellington) must be turning over in their graves. Well to be honest, Tim is just pissed he can't bet on football in 2011 as it stands.

The Supreme Court tells a douchebag Jets fan to get over Spygate already:
The U.S. Supreme Court refused to let a New York Jets fan sue the New England Patriots and coach Bill Belichick over the 2007 “spygate” videotaping scandal.
The justices today turned aside an appeal by Carl J. Mayer, a New Jersey lawyer and Jets season-ticket holder who said the Patriots cheated him and other fans out of their right to see honest competition on the field. A lower court had thrown out the lawsuit.
Belichick and the Patriots were fined a combined $750,000 for videotaping the Jets’ signals during a 2007 game in violation of National Football League rules.
It's kind of pathetic that this nonsense got all the way to the Supreme Court.

I fucking love Deadspin. They've taken the occasion of Tiki Barbour coming out of retirement to point out some of the dumb shit football pundits said about what a great thing this was gonna be:
But before we celebrate Tiki trying to make his child support payments, let's all remember the collective handjob the media gave Barber for walking away from the game five years ago. Ricky Reilly:
"When I get home from work," says Barber, "my [two- and four-year-old] kids come running at me. They make me get on my knees, and we play tackle football. On replacement knees, that's not happening. I saw this video of O.J. Simpson once, and his kids came running at him and he couldn't even pick them up. So I can see that if I play three or four more years, like everybody wants me to, that could be me. But when I'm 50 years old, and I'm having trouble just getting down the stairs, will they be cheering for me then?"
Meet Tiki Barber.
He walked, while he still could.
I know. Such courage. He walked, while he could still nail blonde chicks. USA Today:
By the bluish glow of a computer screen, Barber pores over world news in white shirt and tie, checking the latest on Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Turkey, President Bush's trip to the NATO summit in Latvia and developments in Iraq.
ZOMG! He's so learned! Not like those other savages out there on the field!
And, of course, Peter King:
You know the Barber retirement thing is no joke when you hear him use the word "Condi.'' You know, "Condi,'' as in the nickname for Condoleezza Rice, the Secretary of State. He was talking about having lunch with her at the State Department in a riff about how interesting the other side of his life is.
Let's celebrate the high point of his storied TV career that he so bravely walked away from football for:

That's not the reason we didn't like him you ass! He 'announced his retirement' in the middle of the season, making himself the center of attention and an obvious distraction from the team for 1/2 the season.

Brandon Meriweather is being investigated as the shooter in a February 27th incident according to reports. (http://deadspin.com/#!5780444/patriots-safety-brandon-meriweather-allegedly-guns-down-two-men-during-brawl)
Apparently the information is coming directly from the attorney representing the two victims, so take it for whatever it's worth.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith says that an 18 game regular season schedule is "off the table."
Speaking before approximately 100 fans during a joint event with radio station 106.7-FM "The Fan" at the union's downtown office, Smith was categorical that the players won't expand the regular season from 16 to 18 games. He previously had been nuanced in his remarks, saying any change would be predicated on significant adjustments to teams' offseason training programs and the amount of padded contact the players endured during in-season practices.
However when contacted after a Q&A session with fans, Smith reiterated that 18 games is a no-go with the players.
"First of all, the league has never presented a formal proposal for 18 games," he told SI.com. "But more importantly, it's something that our players don't want. Eighteen games is not in the best interest of our players' safety, so we're not doing it."

But a bigger sticking point seems to be that that owners continue to insist the players give back more revenue to them, but won't open their books:
Speaking outside the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service offices in downtown Washington today after negotiations ended for the evening, Smith said: "How much financial information would you want before you write a $5 billion check?"
Smith was referring to the total amount owners are seeking over a potential five-year agreement.
Both sides spoke much more openly about money matters Wednesday than they have since they entered mediation Feb. 18. With the collective bargaining agreement set to expire Friday, they clearly are far apart on how to divide more than $9 billion in annual revenues.
On his way into the 14th session at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, NFL lead negotiator Jeff Pash said the issue of financial transparency -- a key sticking point -- "really should be behind us."
"We've made more information available in the course of this negotiation than has ever been made available in decades of collective bargaining with the NFLPA," Pash said. "Far more information. And we've offered to make even more information [available], including information that we do not disclose to our own clubs."
But Smith called the data the NFL offered to provide "utterly meaningless." It was rejected, the union said, because it didn't include material requested nearly two years ago by Smith in a letter to Commissioner Roger Goodell.
"Has it gotten everything it wants? Evidently not. Have we offered to provide more? Absolutely," Pash said Wednesday evening. "And is it a subject that we're prepared to discuss? Absolutely."

The deadline is still set for Friday, no word of an extension yet, though talks do continue.

I'm wondering how quickly the general public starts blaming the players and siding with the owners.

Hope you're not ready for some football...Labor talks have stopped, and the NFLPA has filed the paperwork to decertify themselves as a union.
So it appears the lockout will begin tonight at midnight.

NOW! Did you hear what was offered?
No 18 game schedule for 2 years and no approval of 18 games without approval from players. Lessened off season workouts by 5 weeks, less contact during camp, practice and during the season. More money towards injury prevention, 60% increase to current retired players who retired before the 90s (those are the ones suffering most right now too), more health benefits for retirees. A split in the $800 million that they were apart on so the owners would give in $400 mill and so would the players. A pay scale that equals 2009 salaries but is more then 2010s. Increases of 20 million per team by 2014 equaling exactly what the Union wanted. Guaranteed contracts that would guarantee more then 1 injured year. No hard rookie cap but a rookie cap that allows for agents and adjustments (exactly what the union wanted at min for rookies to change what is currently going on with rookies crazy salaries). Increased rosters. All turned down by the players.
The players response on ESPN. "Things are good the way they are why change"
So yes I dont like that the owners dont want to open their books fully but then again why would I want the public or anyone knowing my business? The players are being greedy especially after all the owners have now offered and caved in on.
The players play and yes they give up their bodies but they dont have to. For every player there are 100 that would take his place.
I hope they get this done soon I still dont think we wont have a season. I only care because I dont want to hear about this everyday til a deal is made. We all know they will sign something. I hope they remove 2 preseason games and add the 2 games to the season!

Thats what I thought they would do but then the owners wouldnt be making more money from it. They charge the exact same price for preseason tix as they do for regular season, so why make an 18 game schedule without banking an extra 2 games worth of cash?

They dont get more from the tix sales for that game they get more money from their tv contracts because they are paid more for regular season games then preseason.

They're asking the players to take pay cuts because they're "losing money". So the players tell them, ok, we'll do that, just show us that you're losing money. And the owners keep refusing because they're lying.

Lying or not the players dont deserve 60 / 40 split.
And what about everything they turned down that is better then they have? You have to give a little and they seem to want to take and take!

It really isn't even most of the owners who made this into a huge issue either. It's a few high profile owners who built tax pit stadiums with mostly private money and now they want the players to help foot the bill for their mistakes.

the players arent asking for a 60/40 split. I love the mis information
Right now, the owners get 1 bill off the top and then the players get 56% of the rest. The players want the owners to take the bill off the top and SPLIT 50/50 the rest. The OWNERS want to take 2 bill off the top and then split the rest 50/50. the players said if we are going to give you any more off the top, show us you need us to, and we will. the owners refuse to show it, so the players said fuck off
they NEVER EVER EVER asked for more. infact, they offered to keep it the same. they offered to let the owners take 1.2 bill off the top and 50/50 the rest. they just dont wanna give up more money. THOSE are the actual facts right now.

it currently is a 60 / 40 (close to it like 58 /42) splt why do you think you know everything. just like the nba contracts that you are wrong on. you come here make you post with a remark trying to make it look like someone is posting mis information. right now it is a 60/40 split in favor of the players. the owners get the 1 st billion then it is a 60 / 40 split owners now want min 1st billion then a 50/50 split.
When did i say the players asked for more. i said the players want to keep it as it is they are happy i also said that the owners offered all those things about 3 or 4 posts above but the players didnt accept even after the owners gave into those things
stop with your shit talking. Not once did anyone say, write anything that the owners want 2 billion off the top then the split. before this entire thing ended today they were a billion off not a billion more off the top a billion total of that ended at 600 million off.

Yeah, supposedly the owners are fighting each other, as well.
