they own versus and are turning that into an espn type network? that would be great but we know what will happen they will get some pub and viewers then go over the top to and become just like espn.

I guess it's not that tough, I just never realized they play Dallas next week which really helps. Relying on the Jets is kind of scary though, especially since it's followed by relying on the very team you want them to beat and they'd surely be demoralized by then.

The good thing about it is that if things shake out the right way next week the Eagles play the Redskins and the Giants play the Cowboys all at 1pm week 17. And going in every team will still be alive. So there's that.

I still expect the Cowboys to definitively end things for the Eagles next week.

Michaels called Roethlisberger "indestructible".

Believe me, I'n not questioning the guy's toughness - he's been sacked over 300 times and has proven his ability and willingness to play injured. But this is one of the most battered guys in the NFL. I can't see him playing at 35 - just from the concussions alone.

Not sure indestructible is the best description for Big Ben.

I realize this but the reason I think its sneakier than usual is that its Comcast, which owns NBC running a commercial for its own network which is intended to compete with ESPN.

I suspect that when you see those Dish, Direct TV etc. ads run on ESPN that's ESPN getting the ad money and running it. Comcast runs its own spots on ESPN (usually local car dealers, for example). I doubt Comcast would run Direct TV spots in competition with itself. However, here they're pretty much running their own spot (free to itself) in competition with ESPN on ESPN's own channel.

Maybe its not as big a deal as I'm imagining it. I just found it odd.

nah, that sucks and I almost did the same thing. Once I saw him hobbling all over the field in warmups I knew it would have a huge impact on his game. His mobility/escapability is so huge to that offense, not to mention his throwing lanes were never good bc he couldn't get better angles like he normally does. They should let him if only to see what they have in him. I doubt they will, they seem to like Moore but I dont I think he is terrible. For every great play he makes he looks terrible on 3. If they keep shit bag Ireland I have a feeling they will let Henne walk (they should re-sign him), they will re-sign Moore instead (they shouldnt) and draft someone in the 1st round and never give Devlin a shot. I hope that doesnt happen but they havent made a good decision in a long time so nothing will surprise me.

1 good thing that has happened, Reggie Bush has proven to be a good every down back. If they only threw to him more he would be a beast this year. He should end with 1100 or more yards rushing and 7 or 8 tds. He already has a career year with 2 games left!

well that's what happens when you go from mostly a 3rd down back/receiving rb out of the backfield to ultimately the main rb option / full-time back.

I don't think he's a good bt the tackles guy to this very moment and a few good games with Miami have not convinced me yet. They've used him better of late no doubt, but I'm just not convinced.

And let's be honest, he already has 37 more carries and 4 more starts than his busiest year running in the past, and yet still hasn't matched his yardage/td totals for a career year as you stated. He's still just over 1200 yeards total and in 06 he had over 1300 with only 8 games started. He also hit 8 tds twice before and has yet to hit that mark this year. So he's having a solid year, but not necessary his career year just yet.

Great article about passing in the NFL from back in the day to now. Its about Brees passing Marinos record.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/16542102/tenpoint-stance-when-brees-passes-marinos-mark-it-deserves-an-asterisk

some great parts.

His throws were unbelievably accurate and he did this during a ferocious era of NFL defense. The 1980s were one of the more violent in football when athleticism on the defensive side of the ball, in many ways, was better than the offense. Players like Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White and Ronnie Lott, among many others -- head hunters and rib breakers -- were allowed great latitude to do massive damage to wide receivers and quarterbacks. Receivers weren't protected and quarterbacks were brutalized.

this says it all about this era in the NFL compared to the previous 50 years.

Trent Green, Joe Flacco, David Garrard, Donovan McNabb, Rich Gannon, Shaun Hill, Jay Cutler and Marc Bulger (again all played bulk of career in 2000s) have better ratings than Warren Moon, Dan Fouts and John Elway who played the bulk or a significant portion of their careers in the 1980s.

When the head hunters and big hitters are severely restricted from patrolling the middle, the offense naturally explodes.

bottom line is, ANYONE can argue stats and difs by picking out names from the lot and make their bullshit point

the only reason you even post it is you think it validates your Marino argument and Brees is just better and he deserves the record. Brees is a winner, not some stupid Namath wannabe...oh wait, even he handed the ball off and played a team game. In fact, he even liked giving the ball to other team too.

he has 37 more carries but the starts mean dick. He still isnt playing full time this season and shares time with Thomas and leaves the game inside the 10 yard line for Thomas and Hilliard. He should have at least 5 more carries a game and be on the field at least 10-15 more plays then he is imo. Im not saying he would be as good as Mccoy but he could be that type of back. I never understood why NO and now Miami didnt use him more. The start of this season he was used even less but the last 4 or 5 weeks he has been used the way I thought he should have been used all year. These last 5 weeks he has gone nuts with 3 straight 100 yard games and 1 being a 203 yard game. Hes also avg 5 yards a carry thats nothing to laugh about. Hes having a really good year and I was hoping for more. Maybe next season they will go in to the season and use him this way from the start.

of course it validates my argument for Marino but it also shows how easy it is to pass in this NFL. It not different then when you post something anti yankees or pro Blue Jays and what they are doing that you approve of! Im not hiding the fact that I think the rule changes are the reason his record is being broke. Its nothing like when Marino broke Fouts record. They did it a couple years apart under the same rules and same defenses. This is being done when there is no pass defense and def cant play like they used to.

tell me what is so wrong (flawed) with the article? Nothing imo, are you telling me that this doesnt make sense?

Like Marino, Brees is using pinpoint accuracy to shred defenses. Unlike Marino, Brees is doing it with liberal rules that leave defenses playing with one hand tied behind their back.

In effect, Brees' record will be severely watered down. So much so, that it almost deserves an asterisk.

It's not only Brees. Many of the incredible numbers put up by quarterbacks today are artificially enhanced by rules changes -- particularly changes made in the past several years as the football culture has shifted from an extremely violent one to a just a violent one.

Defensive holding is commonplace now and pass interference calls are astronomically high. It's incredible to watch. It seems as often as not, a long pass downfield ends up in a penalty on the defensive player. This alters how a defender plays a wide receiver. Inevitably, fearing a penalty, a larger cushion is given.

Roughing the passer, blows to the head and the increasing calls for hits on defenseless receivers has given quarterbacks like Brees wide open passing lanes and wide-open receivers. For Marino, it was the Pleistocene age. For Brees, it's the ease of an iPad.

Most important, the new emphasis on player safety has helped eliminate big hits in the center of the field. Players like Lott and Andre Waters intimidated wide receivers who ran across the middle with jaw-cracking hits. Those hits would get a player suspended today. In Marino's day, they were commonplace.

Receivers now go across the middle knowing chances of getting cracked in the head are slim. You see these offenses. Receivers run untouched and wide open. The deep middle is where a defense is most vulnerable and, like any great player, Brees has taken full advantage. The rules have removed lions from the wild allowing the antelope population to prosper.

the starts meant plenty for my comparison bc it's his rookie year where he didn't see much action at all in some games, versus a decent helping even early with Miami. sure it's MUCH more of late, that much I agree with, but that's also why I don't believe he can be a full time guy that hits holes bt the tackles bc even Miami as you say don't have faith in him fully. He still has gotten a lot of work in the red zone, including at the goal line, bc let's be honest, Thomas isn't getting healthy for some reason and he gets very few touches. In reality almost every back, even those few clear #1s give way to a second back to spell them. His workload since around week 8 has been pretty damn solid compared to lots of backs in the league. His size and health history alone make me believe he'll never hold up getting the 25+ carries he has over a couple of the last few weeks. Just my feel.

Yeah that seems to be the sentiment around here that Moore is the shit. However the game before last they played without the star LT and he got killed and concussed. And then the next game they start him again under the same circumstances.

Seems to me that would have been the time to sit him out if they liked him so much. And protect their good back QB they have with him. And that's all he should be is a backup. A few things have to happen for the team to get a top draft QB. Barkley has to come out, they have to pick him, and they have to not fall to far back in the draft by winning out playing the spoiler. OK that's 3 things.

Thomas has 40 less carries on the year and he missed 3 games completely. If you go by what he has averaged per game he would have the exact same amount of carried if not more because those carries would be coming at Bush expense. Thomas also doesnt have 1 rushing TD yet he comes in and shares those red zone carries will Hilliard. Once again we are back to coaching. If they gave Bush a full chance maybe he would prove them wrong about goal line carries. The guy has run very well this season between the tackles.

The 1st half of the season they didnt give Bush the chance to do what he could do. He avg about 10 carries a game the 1st 6 weeks. The last 8 weeks he has avg 16 and its no surprise that he has done really well getting more opportunities and Miami is 5-3 and 0-6 when they didnt use him.

Hes 12th overall in the league among rb in yards and everyone in the top 11 has more carries and even those after him. Arian Foster has 60 more carries and only 90 more yards and is 6th. Adrain Peterson has the same amount of carries and 50 less yards and is 17th. Now im not saying he is as good as those 2 Im saying he is having a great year and if used properly or give the chance who knows what he could be doing.

I can't imagine it being sabotage, because, first, they already have the new stadium (they worked out a deal with Santa Clara), and this was their first big national showcase after getting good again. This was just an embarrassment.

http://eye-on-football.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22475988/34005371

Put simply, it sounds like the Chargers winning out -- they play at Detroit on Christmas Eve and then at Oakland on New Year's Day -- will save the jobs of Turner and Smith.

If the Chargers make the playoffs, Smith and Turner are likely safe. If they miss the playoffs, at least a 1-1 or 2-0 record is probably necessary to save their jobs, although it's worth noting that the two also appear joined at the hip moving forward.

"If Smith is retained, no one should think he will need a new head coach," Acee wrote Friday. "Sources inside and outside Chargers Park say Smith believes in Turner now as much as he did when he went out on a limb and hired him in 2007."

Snoogans
12-24-2011, 10:26 AM

Yeah, yeah, my decision to jump on the Tebow bandwagon was ill-advised.

It'll be interesting to see what he does from here. Is today a sign that coordinators have figured him out and finally do know how to stop him, or is this the sort of shit game that inexperienced players occasionally throw up? We'll see.

In either case, just as no one (including me) should have rushed to anoit him the God of Quarterbacks based on what he's done, I would advise against saying this week's game is proof that he's going to start sucking again now.
